Today I learned that for all I think I know about hockey, I’m absolutely terrible at guessing at fringe players who have scored 5+ goals in a single playoff year.

Today’s Puckdoku – I was 0/3 in guessing at players for Tampa, Detroit and Pittsburgh (noting that I’m trying to get the <2% guys). But apparently, as one example, >5 goals is much less frequent than I thought – Andreychuk did it once in his entire career and it was not for Tampa. – MonkeyPunk

I usually suck at Puckdoku unless it heavily involves one of my teams and/or teams from the East. I know almost nothing about players from old teams out west. But I saw your post and decided to give this one a shot.

I’m gonna go really really obscure for Tampa and try to hit 1% dudes…and maybe a few Leafs.

John Tucker – Brian Bradley – Freddie Modin
Paul Ysebaert – Pavel Datsyuk – Tomas Holmstrom
John Cullen – Shawn McEachern – Ryan Malone

Ok, I did pretty f-ing good on this one, thanks to a lot of time spent playing EA sports NHL Hockey back in the 1990s. I’ve only filled the entire board a small handful of times.

    Puckdoku Game 705 – 9/9????:

    15 Uniqueness
    ????????????
    ????????????
    ????????????

It’s pretty clear that most (if not all) of the “Best Games” are cheaters. Nobody, I mean NOBODY, remembers some of those players, less yet multiples on the same board. I call bullshit.

They have enough cap space to get some quality players, even with JT resigned as a hometown discount. But it really depends on what they want to do, and how far they want to go with matchup lines. There are other center options out there, more two-way guys, but goal-scoring might be a problem. JT could very well score another 30+ goals next year; hard to replace that. – Gravy

They might grab a lower or middle tier free agent or two, but bringing in a top tier talent is probably going to involve a trade. Given the Leafs track record with trades and their current relations with other GM’s, I wouldn’t expect to pull off a case of highway robbery, but maybe Tree can get creative with three-way trades, retention, etc.

I’d like to see the following :

    1) Marner stays for $11m or $12m. (very very very unlikely)

    2) Marner does a sign and trade allowing the Leafs to recoup some assets (again, not very likely).

    3) Weaponize the free space if Marner walks, but don’t be stupid with it. Don’t go throwing term at dudes on the wrong side of 30 unless an eventual trip to Robidas Island is part of the plan (ala the Gourde contract). Also, don’t shoot your wad on a guy like Ehlers. Who does this leave? Probably guys like Gavikrov, Beauvillier, Fabro, Tanev, and maybe take a flier on a project like Drouin or Patty Kane if the price is cheap.

    4) Jesus Fucking Christ, we gotta do something about Rielly. If he’s coked out, put him in rehab and bury his caphit. If he refuses a trade, then redeploy him as a second pairing guy and go after someone like Provorov. Leafs need another top pair D guy. It won’t come cheap. Maybe use some of the Marner cap space. Also, minor tip here – chatter is that Tampa is cutting bait with Nick Perbix. He’s actually a solid 3rd pair guy who will come cheap. I’d snag him if he leaves Tampa (just for depth).

    5) Blockbuster trade that brings in an elite centerman or winger to replace Marner. I’ll hold my breath on this one, but I’m giving Tree a chance here to blow us away with something unforseen and off the board.

I think Berube could make Marner and the “DNA” improve if the right pieces are brought in to compliment him,as Uggie keeps going on about. He’s not wrong about that. But, who is actually available right now? I don’t want to hear Bennett or Marchand. The first is a dirty piece of shit that wouldn’t come to TO unless he’s grossly overpaid, and the other is a bionic geezer piece of shit who is definitely on the wrong side of the aging curve to throw term at.

Realistically, having said all of the rambling shit above, unless Matthews goes Super Saiyan next year and puts the team on his back, the Leafs are going to take a step back without Marner.

What I ordered : McJesus and DrySaddle

What I got : Matthews and Marner

Seriously though, the Leafs have never been able to roll four lines during the Core Four era. This roster is still very top heavy. If you shut down the Leafs top two lines, then they have nothing to answer with. Look at recent Cup winners: Tampa, Florida, Colorado, Vegas. None of them were nearly as top heavy as the Leafs. I mean, Marchand is on the third line in Florida.

And this lack of depth was true even with Marner in the lineup.

Subtract Marner and add two or three scrubs and the problem remains.

I hope Tree has a few tricks to pull out of his hat.

I left my horse out in the rain, but thankfully I remembered to store all of the tack in the barn.

You might say I have a DRY SADDLE.

    McMarner is fucking hilarious.

Don’t let Eggs Benny see that or he’ll have a minor stroke.

It’s simply amazing those guys were able to pass the WWE’s strict drug tests.

I have an opinion about who I don’t want to win. But I’m not saying it out loud. LOL.

I care just enough about the final to post about how much I don’t care about it.

My heart isn’t set on it, but he’s a good example of how you start to change the dynamic of the core. I’m not sold that he’s coming here obviously, but I’m not sold that he’s not. Most reporters say that he wants to stay in Florida but if that’s not possible, he’d like to go to Toronto. Seravalli is reporting that he’s likely to get around $7.5m x 7; Dreger is reporting that he’ll have his pick of the litter and will likely not pick Toronto as a result.

I don’t think any of them really know. I do recall that when he was being shopped from Calgary, he had Toronto as a hopeful destination, but it didn’t work out. You could circle that one as another huge miss by Dubas.

Bennett is definitely going to be pursued, and that realistic dollar figure of $7.5m is probably $9m when teams look at the escalating cap and get greedy. That being said, Bennett is going to be 29, so a 7 year deal until he’s 36 may not be the boat anchor of a contract that it _feels_ like. I don’t know. You’re looking 20 goals / 45 points – maybe that’s 55 points with Nylander – as a 2C? $9m is too high, but it may be what they’d have to pay. – MonkeyPunk

I agree with all of that and I think Bennett is exactly the kind of player the Leafs need, dirty rotten POS that he is.

I just think the cost would be sky-high in terms of caphit and term, and he’d spend his entire Leafs tenure suspended or in the box.

The more I think about the roster next year, the more I start to sober up to the idea that this team is going to take a step back next year if they lose Marner for peanuts or nothing.

I’ll keep an open mind though. Maybe Tree has a big trade or two up his sleeve.

Marner finished 5th in the league in scoring, and 7th in Selke voting.

I get that we all need to come up with ways to cope with his impending departure, but FFS, this team will be weaker next year without him. – Wedgie

So, in essence, what you are saying is – Replace Marner with Poon Jenner and Tanev and we’re golden?

Briebois loves gaming the LTIR system. I can guarantee the last year or two (or three) of that contract will be spent on Kucherov Island.

Still though, that’s a very fair caphit for what Gourde brings. I’m OK with it.

    Bennett isn’t coming to Toronto.
