Apparently the leafs have traded away 40 draft picks including 7 first rounders since Matthews got here.
Not a way to build a team.
So much for using marners money to build depth.
Trade away players, get picks and finish in the bottom 5 this year. This team has needed a step back season for years.

A 3rdThe silver lining for tanking this season is there are some solid options at 3rd-5th overall, some big body players, solid RHD etc. I’m actually not too keen on McKenna. He’s a winger, he’s small and he seems like another Taylor Hall. Still probably a dangerous offensive player but obviously not what the Leafs need more of.
That being said, when Matthews returns, Tanev returns, Stolarz returns and so on, it’s going to be really hard for the Leafs to actually be THAT bad unless they trade everybody, which they won’t do this year. Which means the dreaded “6th overall” scenario where the Leafs miss the playoffs but still surrender a high, top 10-15 pick to Boston.
The Leafs will have to first, fire Treliving, second, trade all expiring contracts in 2026 and again in 2027. You trade Matthews, Nylander and everybody else over 25 at the 2027 draft. You tank in 2028. Tank again in 2029. Hope you can sign McDavid to a max contract (Leafs will have unlimited cap space by now) and then compete again in 2030 with a new crop of 1st round picks, top prospects, lotter players and maybe a slim chance at adding McDavid as the leader of the new group of young players on ELC. Keep Knies, Cowan and Danford and keep adding through the draft with what few picks we still have until 2028.

He’s not laughing, he’s working for the NHL because no good team will hire him. He’ll end up in some dump like Buffalo and continue to be a failed executive. Treliving is also a failure. This mess isn’t on one or the other of them. They’re both failures.
Hardly. He’s been gone for a matter of months, and there isn’t a person alive that thought the Leafs were going to breeze through this year. I’ve been saying for literally over a year that Marner had to be booted into the sun, 2025-2026 was going to be a down year or a complete write off, then the Leafs would have cap space and flexibility to improve. Now, I did NOT predict that next year’s UFA class was going to be coming straight off the short bus, but what can ya do?
Knies is still improving, Cowan is playing much better than I expected, JT is a stud, Willy is doing his usual thing and improving a bit defensively, (yes, I understand that bar is exceptionally low). Matthews will get going playing with Knies and Cowan, book it.
There is nothing this team can do to fix the mess it created. Shanahan was a retard who had his puppet Dubas. Treliving was another puppet who has never proven he can build anything other than the garbage he left behind in Calgary after he lost their stars for next to nothing but problems. They have no elite prospects, they have no 1st round pick until 2028 and the current collection of players is bad enough to almost be a lottery team. Every dinosaur on D will get older and they have little to no hope of any UFAs solving their problems.
This team fucked itself and this year is a preview of what is to come as they are circling the drain and will be rebuilding sooner rather than later.
Their only hope is to fire Treliving now to guarantee they can trade all their assets over 25 years old for maximum value and start the rebuild correctly this time.
If Matthews and Nylander had the character of the guys in your avatar we would have won a couple Cups. Those two greats (Gilmore and Clarke) would gladly trade a bloody nose for a team win. And as much as I loved Clark and Gilmour, they didn’t win a Cup in Toronto either. Gilmour won when the team was build completely solid. Clark never won anything despite his heart. Blah blah Kerry Fraser, they still lost Game 7 vs LA. And never got it together again after that either. Why? Because the Leafs don’t build good teams. They occasionally have some talented players but not enough of a good mixture to make it all work as one complete team. The problem is that to win a Cup you need a TEAM. You need the correct ingredients and the correct amount of those ingredients or it doesn’t work.
Matthews, Marner and Nylander were capable of winning a Cup if the Leafs had surrounded them with the correct players at the correct positions. They traded heart filled, grit players like Kadri. Let Hyman walk as a UFA. Made Rielly their anchor on D. These were massive managerial mistakes. They decided to bring in Tavares and it ruined the balance of the team. They had no D. They had no supporting cast. They had no success.

Having a C stitched to his jersey wouldn’t have made Tavares any less of a useless pile of shit vs. Florida last year. Tavares is currently the de facto captain and the Leafs are absolutely horrible. It makes no difference.
If Matthews isn’t capable of being the captain, the team needs to be rebuilt regardless.
