Playing garbage teams at home is going to be a lot different than playing very good / great teams on the road.
Leafs were supposed to already have built up a lead given their weak schedule with mostly home games.
Injuries, tougher competition, road games…they’ve got Mt. Everest to climb, not just a ladder.
Leafs should claim Tomasino from the Penguins, he’s on waivers. With all the injuries, they got nothing to lose.
Do you think any of those guys will be available in the 3rd round when the Leafs get a pick?
Leafs keep their 1st round pick in 2026 if it’s in the top 5. Which means, if the season ended today, they’d be drafting 5th overall with just under a .500 record. If they lose to the Blues, 4th overall.
Tanking certainly has it’s benefits this year, if they full blown tank it.
No. 3: Keaton Verhoeff, D, 6-foot-4, 212 pounds, North Dakota (NCAA)
Made a gutsy call when he decided to join Victoria teammate Cole Reschny at North Dakota. Reschny was Calgary’s first round pick, 18th overall in 2025, while Verhoeff is expected to go shortly after McKenna in June. He doesn’t possess McKenna’s track record and plays a different position, so it will be fascinating to track Verhoeff’s progress as a draft eligible defenceman in college. The debate will be heavy as to whether he was better off getting more games in the CHL, or utilizing a lighter NCAA schedule to become stronger. Only time will tell. He has checked all the boxes on the way up the developmental ladder from Canada’s Youth Olympic team through gold medals at the U17s and U18 worlds. Most recently, he was Canada’s captain in a bronze medal-winning performance at the Hlinka-Gretzky.
No. 4: Ethan Belchetz, LW, 6-foot-5, 227 pounds, Windsor Spitfires (OHL)
His size always allowed him to dominate youth hockey, and now he is doing the same in the OHL. Last year, Belchetz put up four goals in his third ever OHL game, but tailed off to score just 13 more in the next 53 contests. He roams the ice like he owns it. His hands and feet work well together to create additional space to execute plays. He’s got a big league shot that is effective from distance. I like the fact that he plays in a Windsor lineup with other over-sized players like Chicago prospect AJ Spellacy, and Kings prospect Liam Greentree. Belchetz is a different player, with more offensive upside than both, but he can definitely get some guidance from them on how to navigate his draft season.
No. 5: Ryan Roobroeck, C, 6-foot-4, 216 pounds, Niagara IceDogs (OHL)
Has already set a high bar for himself, having put up 41 goals and 86 points in his draft minus-one season in the OHL. That production is made all the more impressive considering there’s been a lot of noise in the organization since the day he was drafted. With Frank Evola now running the ship, things will settle down this season. Evola brought in head coach Krys Barch who was a solid OHL producer with size and someone Roobroeck can take mentorship from. Another great late birthday player in this draft, Roobroeck’s final ranking will come down to how he progresses in non point-producing situations.

They had the 7th or 8th fewest goals against in the league last year when Stolarz and Woll were actually stopping pucks. Not so much now with Stolarz at the bottom of the league in GA.
Obviously they’re not playing well defensively. They make too many mistakes and McCabe and Carlo are playing like crap. They may not be a very good team but I think they can and will play better than they have been. I think we see some trades fairly soon.
Stolarz wasn’t just average last year, he wildly overachieved. So if you’re expectation is that the Leafs goalies have to overachieve every single season just to be in the top 10 in GA, I’ve got a bridge to sell you. Some idiots, including Treliving, didn’t believe it but I told everybody that Stolarz is a career back-up. He had a career year. He has injury problems and can’t play a full season. He fell back down to Earth. This team was not playing good defense last year or this year. They were just getting extraordinary saves that aren’t there anymore.
McCabe was given an extension. Carlo was acquired for a top prospect and what could become a 6th overall pick. That’s on Treliving’s idiocy, among many other stupid moves he made this offseason.
You’re delusional if you think trades will make this team better. Treliving loses every trade he makes in Toronto. Trades making this team better is like expecting a blind raccoon to perform brain surgery on a gunshot wound.
