The Leafs will hire the DEI candidate every time. Time to go to sleep, this one’s in the loss column. Watched the Sens/Sabres game earlier. That was a good game. Leafs are nothing but cannon fodder right now.

They have like four or five DEI assistant GMs already.

Nylander has already said he would NOT stick around for a rebuild. One has to assume Matthews would give the same answer. And if those two guys waive, absolutely nobody else on the team will not also waive.

Could the Leafs do the following:
    Present: Mike Gillis.
    GM: Sunny Mehta

    I guess we will see.

Sunny Mehta is a worthy candidate but would require a legit hockey guy above him to have the hockey eye test as the final say.

Mike Gillis is not the guy. Absolutely not qualified at all to run this team in terms of track record and doesn’t seem to have anything new to bring to the table either.

Did really state that or is that your statement?

That’s pretty much what he said in a less direct way.

    LeBrun states the following:

    – The odds are higher the Leafs hire both a President and a GM.
    – The search for the next President / GM will be more expansive as the previous one was limited. (Hence why they ended up with a dumbass like Treliving.)
    – The early candidates are applying with the intention of a rebuild, NOT a retool. This means the outside hockey world is giving them the answer they don’t want to hear.
    – The retool / rebuild question will be answered by Matthews.
    – The person hired might just be a “yes man” like Dubas was when Pittsburgh hired him to follow marching orders.

Another goal post shift. He said he prefers a retool to a rebuild.

He prefers to get retards (you) high on hopeium rather than build a team properly.

He also prefers to dye his hair blonde and wear blue framed glasses. He’s a retard (like you).

    Marner quitting on his team.

When exactly did he “quit” on the team? When they wanted to trade him to Carolina and he said no because he didn’t want to leave the team or Toronto and proceeded to lead the team to 1st in the division?

Oh damn, you’re too retarded to know what “quit” means.

The Leafs management pushed him out the door. The Leafs media, which owns the team, created a story to make him the scapegoat. And the most retarded of Leafs fans (people like you) believed it enough to pressure him into going somewhere else with less retards and a less shitty place to live and play hockey in.

Bullpen still sucks. Little has to be replaced. Let him sit for awhile.

Its not JTs fault the results of the team. Bad coaching, bad trades, lack of heart and too many injuries. Even with soft marner the results would be pretty much the same.

I didnt blame marner for vegas’ results. Youre reading into that.

Wrong. Tavares destroyed this team with his first contract. His latest contract saves cap space but his play on the ice hurts the team just like his dog shit display in the playoffs year after year hurt the team. -25 is a fact. He has always sucked defensively and his inability to play at both ends of the ice is a big reason why this team lost games and missed the playoffs. He could play for free and he would still lose games for this team.

Lack of heart comes from leadership which includes Tavares. You want to talk soft? Tavares is soft. Nylander is soft. Matthews is soft. Injuries is a bullshit excuse, Vegas has way more injuries than the Leafs. The Leafs had plenty of injuries last year and they were still 1st in the division. Matthews was playing at 50% and Marner carried the team.

No matter how much you want to lie to yourself, reality is reality; Marner being run out of town destroyed this team.

Ffs Matthews and Marner are just a fucking tag team like The British Bulldogs, trade Auston to Vegas for a bunch of picks and prospects and call it a day

Way too late for that, they already signed Eichel.

The list for Matthews trade partners is interesting. San Jose, LA Kings, Anaheim Ducks among many other options.

They might as well have just admitted that the team will continue its slow and torturous death spiral.

Yes, I agree he did say that, however, he did also say that the new Hockey Ops Leader be that a President or GM will actually decide that. If they hire a new guy and he determines this team can’t be salvaged, he will leave it up to that new hire to deal with it accordingly.

Pelley is an idiot when it comes to hockey. He doesn’t understand that the UFA market won’t save this team. He also probably doesn’t understand that the Leafs development system won’t help this current group fast enough either. An intelligent President of Hockey Ops would understand this quickly. Add to that fact there are only two years left on Matthews’ contract and all that needs to be said from him is “I’m not sticking around for this anymore”. The entire franchise has to pivot to rebuild mode immediately.

Trade Matthews + Nylander at the 2027 draft. Tank 2027/28. Tank 28/29. McDavid is a UFA in 2029. Rod Brind’Amour is a free agent in 2029.

I have to think Berube is gone. I would love to see them grab Cassidy, but they’ll almost certainly let a new GM make that decision… and by the time they hire a new GM, I expect Cassidy will be signed elsewhere.

The new GM / Hockey President could be hired in just a few weeks. There are a lot of guys lining up to take the job according to EF and some of them are good names, others aren’t so much. Pelley wants a new guy running the team before the combine and the draft. Could see a new hire by the middle of the playoffs. I’d consider Pronger as perhaps President (not sure if he has the contract knowledge to be GM), he knows what it takes to win, seems intelligent and has already said in public he would tear this team down to the studs and start over.

Cassidy, DeBoer (career runner up coach) and Laviolette are all available. Cassidy did well in Boston and Vegas but both organizations were very strong “top down”. If the Leafs hire him without the same sturdy structure, he won’t work out like people think he will. DeBoer will take this team back to pretender status. Probably lose in the Conference or Cup Final multiple times. Laviolette is similar to Cassidy, he’ll need reinforcement around him or his discipline won’t work with this core.

I don’t think it matters at this point which coach they hire, the core is broken, the support cast doesn’t exist, this group can’t be fixed, saved or retooled. It’s the Kessel era all over again. Individually, great pieces but collectively, not going to win with this group.
