Marner genuinely wants to stay in Toronto.
    ~UG

I’m not so sure that is the case anymore after he’s gotten the brunt of the hatred for the Leafs’ failure this year (whether deserved or not).

I do believe Marner at one point did want to stay in Toronto, but he also wanted to be the highest paid player in the league, or at least get a $2M+ raise. He simply can’t have both. Rantanen is the comparable, and he’s absolutely smoked Marner in playoff production so far this year. Pay Marner accordingly. While it would suck to lose a player like Marner, it would suck 10x more to be paying him $14Mx8 with a full NMC and get the typical disappearing act. We need to shore up the bottom 6, and giving Marner well over half our current remaining cap would be insane.

Marner will get more than 11.5, and he should at this point. the cap is 88, if it hits 100, then 11.5 is the same as 13.06
Fans are going to adjust to higher cap and contract expectations… but fans are generally slow to move the needle on stuff like that
    ~Senstrolltwo

I think that’s the point that everyone is trying to make. Rantanen JUST signed his extension for $12M, so that’s the benchmark. Everybody knew the cap was going up next year, and now there is even more uncertainty regarding the cap rising due to economic factors. So, if anything, Marner should have even less leverage as we might be back in a slow rising cap situation for the next few years.

Islanders rumored to have permission to talk to Shanahan. I guess they saw a decade of failure and thought, “we need some of that here.”

Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

Oh, shit, the Severn River is incredible. My Uncle had a cottage near the Big Chute, I absolutely LOVED spending time up there!

As far as me being too one sided towards one guy over the other ok fair but I’ll always be one sided towards a 2 way #1 centre who can score 50 + goals almost every year in his prime when healthy over a talented winger – most people would regardless of the names on the jerseys no?

I think it’s a big factor that Matthews was battling injury all year, literally from training camp. It sometimes takes years for players to learn how to win. Sid didn’t win shit until he did. Ovi didn’t win shit until he did. MacKinnon didn’t win shit until he did. It’s a shame that Matthews was nowhere near 100%, because this really could have been the year that things finally clicked.

The talking heads and pundits who talk about them at all, cause let’s face it it’s Carolina and nobody gives a fuck, talk about how they run 4 lines, they are all hard working, north/south guys and they play an “even better” team defense than Florida does. On paper they should be a better shut down team than Florida.
    ~Aaron

Carolina is going to get steamrolled worse than the Leafs did. Florida is simply on another level above every team in the league. Back-to-back Champs, book it.

Forget about goals and assists for a minute, I’m shocked that Berube didn’t separate AM and MM for DEFENSIVE purposes. The JT line was getting their faces caved in for most of the playoffs, why not switch MM and WN to get a little more defensive prowess on the second line?!? Mitch is a superior defender to Willy, I figure the switch was worth a look.

Like let’s try to be positive? Leafs have 9 consecutive years in the playoffs, including years they weren’t expected to make it. They also have shit the bed a bunch too.
    ~Aaron

Interesting to note, in those 9 years, 5 of the teams that eliminated the Leafs (assuming Florida does this year), went on to the Cup Finals. That’s not nothing.

Yes, the Leafs need some drastic changes up front, but holy shit this team is close. If they hadn’t shit the bed in game 7 at home, I think they’re in the Cup Finals. Tre came in to a bit of a shit show, and in just two years he’s shored up our D and tendies. Give him another year, maybe two, to get the forwards figured out, and I think we’ll see more success. Winning in professional sports is hard as fuck. The Wild have been eliminated in the first round 8 straight years, but nobody talks about that because they’re not the center of the hockey universe.

If the Panthers cruise past the Canes in 5 does that change a bit of the bad taste the Leafs fans have?

like maybe with a few tweaks they can come back stronger?

    Run it back!!
    ~Senstroll

Interesting point by Senstroll over in Shittsville, errr, HB. This is what I’ve been saying to everyone that’s been trolling me offline, (mainly Oiler fans). I said even before the playoffs started that Florida is the best team in the league and is VERY likely to go back-to-back. They should (like the Leafs would have done too), roll over Carolina and then the Cup finals may be a coin flip. Losing to the back-to-back Cup winners is nothing to scoff at. Florida is just built different, they’re built for playoff hockey and could beat just about any team in the cap-era in a 7 game series.

Ideally for me, (a long-suffering Leaf fan living in Alberta), Florida absolutely steamrolls Carolina, Dallas beats the Oilers as fast as possible, then Florida dummies Dallas. Then I can say to Oiler fans that they lost to the team that lost to the team that JUST barely beat us. (Mind you, Florida showed in games 5 and 7 just how far ahead of us they really are).

In other news, if you’re reading through the HB thread, if you just ignore any comment by ‘that guy’ or anyone responding to him, you can fly through the thread pretty quick.

Morgan has to be moved out and you are not getting value for him.
    ~Fakepartofme

Morgan Rielly is going to be wearing a Leaf sweater for three more years, and the sooner we all accept that the better off we’ll be.

If Marner truly wanted to stay, why wouldn’t they already have worked out an extension? It’s six weeks till he’s a UFA, I think he tests the market.

If he stays, how long do we keep running back the same team before we realize it’s fucking insanity?

And what would you do to get this team to the next level?

    Re: UG

I have no clue who is going to come in and why they would want to, that’s Tre’s job. You’re probably not going to replace Marner’s 100 points, even if you replace him with two guys, but that doesn’t necessarily make this team worse.

Regarding JT vs Marner and disappearing acts, yes, I would much rather be paying JT $5M to disappear vs Marner at $14M to disappear.

The main point I was trying to make was that Marner is going to choose to leave no matter what the Leafs do, so they have to pivot.
