Pro Tip: Professional athletes are mentally tougher than you are. How did Torts “overall organization wide. . . set them back a lot”? His three years of missing the playoffs got them better draft picks and deadline dumps got them more assets. Now that it’s in the rear view mirror, Torts helped lead to their bottoming out, which “big picture”, is working out fine.

I only watched last year and saw a bad team with quite a few good players. How is that possible with a coach in his third year if he’s not an issue? I would say yes but all that is irrelevant going forward.

Still Terry became an important part of Flyers history lest we forget, who, like Torts, was hired by clueless executives to return the Flyers to glory after missing the playoffs. Jay Snider was in charge while Russ Farwell was GM and Terry brought them all down. A real murderers row of executives. Terry’s failure in his lone year as coach caused Ed Snider to take back the team presidency from Jay and Russ’s final act before he himself was fired was to fire Terry.
There might be a lesson there but seriously the coach/co-GM who was just let go only a few months ago is extremely relevant to the current players and make up of the current front office.
Pot? Meet kettle. Actually, Farwell did some good things during his tenure. He fixed the drafting, despite the Jagr pass, traded for Brind’Amour and Lindros, despite the Forsberg inclusion. Torts is not extremely relevant to the current players. These guys are focused on right now. Perhaps a handful are still traumatized about a bad coach they had in pee-wees.

“Oliver Bonk (upper body): Bonk suffered an injury during Rookie Camp. The Flyers intially classified it as day-to-day. However, the rookie defenseman has not skated or practiced since then. He underwent further evaluation last week. There is no further update since then.”
All one can do is shake their head. Any idea what that “injury” may be?

Bill Meltzer posted that Jones is smarter than he appears in the video because the flyers need to pander to a certain segment of fans. He knows this because he knows Jones.
My take is that if you don’t want people to think you are a fool, don’t willingly let a big corp portray you as a fool. the gold standard. one of the best run organizations in sports. one of the winningest franchises in the NHL. dedicated ownership who wants to win. a management team who is on the right path to contention. a new, successful, era of orange.
also knowing hockey doesn’t equate to one being successful at running a team or to be successful as a coach.
The Flyers did a really important thing last night: They stole two points on the road. Solid 1st, bad 2nd although Grebenkin-Zegras-Michkov warmed a bit after not much in the 1st, and they tied things up late in the 3rd. Once things got to the shootout, I was pretty confident they’d grab point 2. They’re going to steal shootout points with Zegras and Michkov. Goalies were good, Drysdale was surprisingly very good.
Huge. It will hold so much relevance and importance once the season starts. They will look at that 1st preseason game as a key critical moment in this upcoming seasons success.
As far as the article itself. Need to stop worrying about zegras and his defensive play. Trying to force him into something he is not will fail. Let him loose offensively so to speak. Not saying he must abandon defensive coverage stop making it the #1 priority. Puts much unneeded pressure on him that wont allow him to play his game.
Let nesbitt hype begin. Will nesbitt end up the better nhl player over the jett?

Flyers Open Training Camp: The rope is gone
Day One of the Flyers first training camp under Rick Tocchet had one big difference from past Philly camps or the current camps in Ottawa and other cities. Tocchet and his staff introduced systems concepts right off the bat. There was no bag skate (coaches prefer “conditioning skate”) to be seen: no suicides (line-to-line wind sprints), no endless laps and, most strikingly, no rope down the middle of the ice.“We’re actually getting into some systems, and playing hockey. It’s different than using a rope and skating laps, that’s for sure,” team captain Sean Couturier said.
“It goes with me everywhere,” Tortorella said with a smile. “I’ve been fired a few times; I always ask for the rope back when I’m out the door.”
It doesn’t hurt that under the new CBA rules (taking effect next year) the rope test is illegal but now Torts can tug at his rope all he wants in his house. Torts coaching methods where he was abusive to players (which crossed the line) should’ve been made illegal long ago but the Flyers love that stuff.
It’s a refreshing take from Coots regarding the new coaches and makes you wonder why the Flyers kept doubling down on Torts until Torts eventually fired himself. Working on getting everyone on the same page with the new system and prioritizing the AHL team being on the same page as the big club sounds like such a basic thing but for the Flyers it’s never even occurred to them until now.
I’m not saying the Flyers will be any better this year, there’s still a huge talent and development gap to make up, but it sounds like there’s actually adults in the room this year rather than a petulant child who airs grievances and whose main coaching tool is to play harder, not smarter.
The best thing to happen to this team in 3 years is Torts quitting on the Flyers because DB/Jonesy were prepared to ride it all the way down.

would really love to know who the main driver was in hiring him as I believe 100% it was not fletcher. that farce of a consulting firm making the recommendation is priceless.
