Red Wings: Griffins On Fire In 10-1 Win

The Detroit Red Wings have consistency issues, however their AHL affiliate is dominant right now. The Grand Rapids Griffins offense was on full display in a 10-1 win last night. Apart from the score, two players had a hat trick in the game.

Interestingly, the hat trick performances came from Dominik Shine and Eduards Tralmaks.  Shine made his NHL debut last season at the age of 31. Tralmaks, 28, has yet to play in any NHL contests. Both players have 9 goals, consequently both may be options for call ups this year.

Similarly,John Leonard has continued to dominate in the AHL ranks for scoring. Leonard has 12 goals and 8 assists in 12 games played. For the defense, Antti Tuomisto leads in points with two goals and seven assists in 14 games played.

The Red Wings built call up depth for this season

The NHL schedule is always tough, however this year it is incredibly taxing. A three week break for the Olympic Games has teams playing every other night for much of the year. Therefore, Detroit loaded up on veteran depth over the summer.

The Red Wings are in the midst of playing four games in six days.  Also, the team will be heading to the west coast amidst a similar schedule next week. This taxing workload created a need to have several callup options, and soon that could be tested. Veterans and prospects alike know what the opportunity could be for them.

Which player will get the next call up?

The Red Wings have already seen four rookies make their NHL debut this year. Veteran players like Eduards Tralmaks and John Leonard are hoping for an opportunity as well. Steve Yzerman seems to have done well to fill the AHL with options should injuries become an issue.

Notably, Amadeus Lombardi was absent from the 10-1 victory last night. Lombard, a former fourth round pick, sits third on the Griffins with 14 points (3G, 11A) in 13 games. Unfortunately, Lombardi’s previous season was derailed by injury. However, Lombardi still managed 19 goals and 21 assists in 44 games played.

Rookie Michael Brandsegg-Nygard has also started to break through. After a difficult start and reassignment, MBN now has three goals and four assists in 10 games played. The Red Wings have several options, and that could be put the test soon. Whichever player gets the call knows that this could be a chance to grab an NHL spot.

I have to say… I really think Leonard has earned the first call-up. I mean what else does a guy need to do to earn the call-up ? He’s leading the AHL in points ! MBN and Lombardi would be next on my list. And please…. keep Hamonic on the bench !! He’s like -7 in his last couple of games. Terrible. Call up Wallin or Tuomisto if you need to… but keep Hamonic off the ice. Hoping somebody will take Gustauffson and/or Holl off our hands before the trade deadline. Could happen as injuries keep piling up around the league. Time to shop Rasmussen or even Berggren if a good return is there to be had.

Side note…. I’ll be at the Griffins game tomorrow night against the Iowa Wild. I’ll get a chance to see Nygard play in person. He’s only 20… so the kid still has time to improve.

Feels like Leonard should absolutely get a look. 2nd pp unit, could be a really good fit. Hamonic, that GWG turnover was brutal for sure

Enjoy the game!! MBN has really started to gain his confidence. He’s engaging physically and the game is slowing down for him.

    The way we’ve played…….WAIT…..

Wishing ALL of you a warm, Family and friend-filled Thanksgiving. There’s much to be thankful for, but….PLEASE remember those who Serve across the globe, away from Family and loved ones. I know the melancholy they feel – please be Thankful for them and more importantly; their Families.

Now, the way we’ve played is just crappy. Blindingly awesome one day, total trash the next. There are sooo many holes on this team. Our D is atrocious. There’s no consistency across the ice. I’ve seen Mo look like a rookie, Chiarot’s been (I CANNOT believe I’m going to say this), the most-steady and reliable. HOWEVER, I truly think Mo’s playing injured from several weeks ago when he was sent into the boards. The guy does NOT quit.

GRG, man that team is STACKED. For a couple of years, there’s been constant deference to GRG and what’s in the pipeline; I think we can see just what the future portends for the Big Club; we just have to weather the storm. And thankfully the East is so tight that even if we crap out, we could still sneak into the SCPO – not that that’s the panacea, BUT……

I know this team is better than they show, we just need to come out hard and stay nasty for 60min, boot-to-the-throat nasty. I still believe that we can pull the trigger on a move or 2 and change the entire complexion of this team. But I REFUSE to part with MBN, or Kasper, or ASP…..they ARE our foundation and it shows. Now, if we could land McD…….I might have to go into the Witless Protection Program 😉 because I’d dump a big name. Regardless…..

There are always peaks and valleys, lads. ‘A man’s true character is how he reacts in the face of adversity’. Time to show our true character….

Again, wishing you ALL a Happy Thanksgiving and a heart-felt THANK YOU to those who serve, their Families, and my fellow Veteran’s; your sacrifices are truly appreciated and YOU are why we are free to celebrate this humbling day.
