Red Wings Score Big with Postava Signing, Savage Not Certain

Red Wings sign Postava

The Red Wings are rumored to be interested in Nicolas Hague.  With an important summer ahead, the team has already been busy. An important piece was just added to the prospect pool.

The Red Wings added to their prospect pool, signing goalie Michal Postava. The 23 year old Czech goalie was an undrafted free agent. An impressive post season had multiple teams seeking his services.

Postava led his team to a championship with a .940 save% and 1.97 goals against. His regular season stats saw a .921 save% and 2.39 goals against. The numbers certainly indicate a promising addition in net for Detroit.

It is likely that Postava will start the season in Grand Rapids in tandem with Sebastian Cossa. With a compacted schedule due to the Olympic break, both may have opportunities for a call up. This could be a year for several prospects to get NHL minutes.

Red Wings will not sign Savage

It was reported that Detroit will not be signing prospect Redmond Savage. The 2021 fourth round selection has finished his NCAA career. It’s not clear if Detroit will tender a qualifying offer to retain his rights in August.

Savage spent the last 2 years at Michigan State University.  He was named Captain for the Spartans, but saw limited action this past season. In 20 games his scoring was limited to 5 goals and 6 assists.

This doesn’t necessarily mean a parting of ways with Detroit. The Griffins could ultimately sign Savage to an AHL deal. There could also be a training camp paid tryout offered in the fall.

Tuomisto needs a new contract

2019 second round pick Antti Tuomisto’s entry level contract has expired. The 6’5” right shot defenseman has shown promising growth playing for the Grand Rapids Griffins. With size and strength, many expect for him to have an opportunity to make the NHL squad.

It was reported, however, that there are some concerns about Tumoisto’s development. General Manager Steve Yzerman was quoted as saying:  “For Antti, it’s still again working on the pace to keep up, especially as a defender,”.

It would be surprising to see Detroit move on from Tuomisto. Still, the opportunity to ultimately relies on the player. The speed of the NHL game is incredibly taxing for blue liners.  This summer’s training could be the most important yet for Detroit’s defensive prospects.
