The Vancouver Canucks have always done a fantastic job honouring their own. Tuesday was no different. They honoured John Garrett in the way John Garrett would enjoy. The n rink tributes included  John Garrett trivia and balloons of hot dogs for the crowd.

Meanwhile, John Shorthouse wore socks and ties given by John’s wife Sarah. A second intermission interview with Jim Hughson. Both the broadcast and the Canucks did a great job.

Canucks gave effort, result was unchanged

As for the game, the Canucks battled. But ultimately, the Stanley Cup Champions Carolina Hurricanes showed why they were the Stanley Cup Champs with a 6-3 win. They controlled the game. When they had the puck, it was not leaving their possession. They outshot the Canucks 44-17. This included 32 -9 in the last two periods.

The Canucks did some good things. Specifically, special teams. They killed off 5 Canes power plays.  Including a third-period double minor to Filip Chytil. It was the third time this year they allowed zero power-play goals. They scored on their only one. They came back to tie the Canes after 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2. But the struggle to generate offence continues to be one of the issues the Canucks are dealing with. It’s not from a lack of effort. It’s from a lack of talent.

The other was defensive zone coverage. Especially on both Nicolai Ehlers goals. Ehlers’ first-period goal was a wide-open shot into an empty net. The third-period goal was a breakaway where he zipped past a Canucks defender to score.

I thought Max Sasson and Jonathan Lekkermaki had solid games. Sasson played 13:44 . Three shots on goal.3:39 of PK time. 69.2 FO%. Sasson-Gallagher-Bains created energy.

Also liked the effort from Jonathan Lekkermaki. He gets the power-play goal. 15:51 3 shots on goal. The Canucks only had 5 high-danger chances. Lekkermaki had one of them.

The Canes had a pretty solid night. First, Nic Deslauriers scored two goals. Not only his first two goals of the season. His first two goals as a Hurricane! His last goal was April 13, 2025. His first goal pumped up in the Hurricane bench. They also got a solid effort from Jusso Valimaki. His first game in 632 games. 11:25.One assist. One shot. Two blocks. This speaks to who the Hurricanes are. They are without Hall, Staal, Jarvis, and Jankowski. But they play to their identity. They have depth. And they don’t beat themselves.

Sat Shah Returns

We’ve been talking about the “media rebuild” going on in Vancouver. There was one person who was missing. It was Satiar Shah. Well, he’s back! Starting Monday, October 26, Sat will have a daily Mon-Fri show starting at 4:00 Vancouver time. There will also be a post-game show after every game as well. Sat brings a calm voice in a loud wind. Often bringing nuance to some very loud debates in this market. Great to see him back.

This also introduces a new media group to Vancouver. Sick Media. Sick Media has been growing across Canada this year. They are from Montreal.  They produce 25 podcasts. Not only the NHL. But also NBA, NFL, and MLB. They also added Illegal Curve from Winnipeg and the Rose Report, hosted by former 960 personality Matt Rose, in Calgary.
