ParticipantGame 1: Habs 3 Leafs 2
The game was close and could have went either way. The Leafs did well against a cohesive team that had only 1 new player in the lineup. Kreider. Leafs had 4 returning players on their forward lines from last year. A short preseason showed a lack of cohesion. Raddysh looked rusty and made a couple of boneheaded mistakes that ended up in the net. Tanev and McCabe looked good on the back end. OEL and Stecher played fine also. Bob was good, but not great. The Leafs definitely need to work out their forward lines. The Habs looked like a contender tonight, and the Leafs were chasing the game for the last 30 minutes. Tonight’s scores showed a lack of goal-scoring. Although Boston won by 3, they didn’t score until under 5 minutes left in the 3rd. Florida waited to win 1 – 0 against Carolina in the last 3 seconds of overtime. No blowouts so far tonight.
I know lots of the fanbase aren’t happy with this outcome, myself included; I think they need time to gel. Hopefully they can beat the Islanders tomorrow night. I hate it when they have more home games at the start of the season, then lose a few and are chasing all year to get in the playoffs. It happened last year, and they never got close. Marchenko played well tonight, but McKenna was invisible. It’s hard to win when you have 10 new players in your lineup from last year. Hopefully they play better tomorrow night.
This strikes me as a pretty accurate account of the game – at least the one I watched.
The Roslovic / Marchenko familiarity and chemistry was on display a few times and I think those 2 with Matthews will have some magic. Hard to expect much from Marchenko in game 1 considering he literally arrived in Toronto in the afternoon of his first game as a Leaf but I did like what I saw as far as his ability to drive the play, get the zone, his speed and his willingness to shoot.
As others noted Raddysh had a tough night – hopefully he settles down looks like he’s over thinking it.
Willy scoring 2 early is good, and he looks ready and focused.
Bob was good – not great but promising to see as it looks like he could easily trend back to his old self and that last year was the exception and and not the goalie he really is = despite what the guy who can’t every be anything other than negative thinks.
I liked the new look bottom 6 and that they seemed to bring some jam and grit to the game.
The Habs one because of Dobes in my opinion. He was relied on to make multiple ’10 bell’ saves and he delivered. Bob was good but wasn’t asked to make any 10 bell saves really and as such didn’t make any. I was having flashbacks to when the Leafs used to win these types of games in the Eddie Belfour era where if not for Belfour and him making multiple incredible saves they probably lose games or even playoff series against teams like Ottawa. I liked it better when it was the Leafs who were winning games many say they shouldn’t because of goaltending. Now a days if the Leafs lose due to this they suck, if they win because the Leaf goalie steals them a game they still suck and are only lucky because the goalie had a great game. At least around these parts from some and definitely in the sports media world. lol
Only 83 more games to dissect.
Go Leafs Go.
