Many of the fans on here wanted a teardown. Some wanted a retool. It looks like something in between. Looking at the trades Chayka has made since he was signed as GM, you have to think that Toronto has overvalued many of the players that they let go. Everybody thought that Woll, Hildeby, and Brandon Carlo would allow the Leafs to acquire a top 6 forward, a first-pairing defenseman, or several first-round draft picks. Enter the Matthew Knies sweepstakes. Picking up Kirill Marchenko was at least an attempt to shake up the top 6. The other trades proved that the Leafs and their fanbase were sold on the idea that their players were worth more in a trade than they received. As usual, they overvalued their talent. Treliving was not quick on his feet and traded away valuable draft capital. Chayka came in and lucked out with the 1st overall pick, but two first-round picks were frittered away from past stupidity in useless trades. This is the Leafs team that you’ll see for the next two years. After that, the Matthews and McDavid circus will arrive in town. Almost all of the contracts of the bottom 6 expire in two years. Add Matthews to that equation. I expect this year is make-or-break. Another poor showing and Matthews will be moved. Then the rebuild will happen. Losing those two first-rounders will make it hard to rebuild. It’s up to this team to decide the path of the Maple Leafs going forward.

Finally, on Matthew Knies. He was a good, young power forward. He had lots of potential. He still might turn out that way. He’s only 23. However, concussions, injuries, and inconsistencies crept into his game. Part of that was the Berube factor. Changing styles 3 times in 4 years made it hard on the team to find their identity. I didn’t want the Leafs to lose Knies, but something tells me that Management knew something about him. He didn’t look right in preseason. Treliving tried to move him at the trade deadline last year. Why would Chayka trade him before seeing him in a regular-season game? Something seems amiss here. Time will tell.

With Mckenna and Marchenko the Leafs have players that can carry the puck into the zone..they didnt have much of that last season.
Although Berube only likes playing in his own zone apparently

Same old shit, score more goals and allow more goals.

Their game plan is just attack and hope your senior aged goalie who had his worst season last year stands on his head all year behind a flimsy blueline. Oh, and never have injuries.

The majority of their top-six is soft, weak and defensively inept. Exactly the combination that loses when the games matter most against teams like Florida and Carolina.

This is not a Cup contender. They’ll be lucky to make it in a wild card spot.

So Dubas tried to trade Knies for Hagel, Tre tried to trade Knies to Montreal for magic beans and Chayka traded Knies for Marchenko
The Leafs had something about Knies they wanted to move on from…for some reason

Hagel is an elite player. The other two GMs are just retarded at making trades.

The reality is, Knies is the only one without trade protection. The way he played in the playoffs showed he deserved to stay on a sweet discount.

Leafs just did what they always do; bleed talent and lose trades.

Hate losing Knies, but Marchenko is a RW and McKenna is a LW (Knies was a LW), I think we will see:

    McKenna, Matthews, Marchenko
    Cowan, Tavares, Nylander

Pretty solid top 6 and good mix of talent. And the bottom 6 has so many options now and I think Miles Wood is being overlooked a bit but he’s big guy, can score in the right position, good defensively and tough…and an upgrade on most of the bottom 6, so it just got better too.

Woods, Paul, Roslovic is a pretty strong 3rd line.
Duhaime, Blueger, Sissons is a 3rd line disquised as a 4th line, add McEwen when you need a face puncher.

Overall line up looks a lot different than last season. Guess we’ll see if they can gel together but it certainly looks like most spots individually got better, especially the bottom 6. And Elvis is on IR getting shoulder surgery(?) so who even knows when or if he’ll play for the Leafs, but a lot of you guys wanted him a couple years ago if I remember correctly. Maybe he gets back to form when my boy Stoli gets injured inevitably. Kinda don’t see anything but upgrades with Chayka’s moves so far, and I hated the idea of him as GM, so not being biased at all.

    McKenna, Matthews, Marchenko
    Cowan, Tavares, Nylander
    Wood, Paul, Roslovic
    Duhaime, Blueger, Sissons

    McCabe, Raddyish
    Rielly, Tanev
    OEL, Stetcher
    Blankenberg

    Bob
    Stoli

Hmmm, interesting, can’t decide if I’m excited for real or not. LTSD (Leafs Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a fickle bitch.

Hope Knies has a great career. Liked that kid.

Chayka adding to his list of trades lost.

Absolutely trash deal for the Leafs.

Marchenko is 3.85m for this season, so I guess he has a full season to “earn it” before he actually gets paid.

I dont mind the Knies for Marchenko 1 for 1, but I dont see why the leafs had to take 2 bad players/contracts and add a 2nd.
Andre was fine to move since they signed Blankenburg

Marchenko adds speed the leafs very much need. I like Knies but I do think his perceived value on the ice and Power forward rep were a tad overblown for what he brings.

Chayka is a mover and a shaker, he does lots of stuff… hope all these moves work out

Exchanging Elvis who is on LTIR and Wood who is a Marlie for Lorentz who didn’t make the team and Andre who was probably #9 D is a wash. Marchenko is probably a second rounder more valuable to Leafs than Knies

Marchenko was one of the fat fucks out of shape at CBJ camp. Good thing they paid him 12.5 million a season before he ever played a game. Wouldn’t want him to earn it or anything.

for whatver its worth…but this out of shape stuff is coming from Andrew Raycroft?

Andrew Raycroft just said on NHL Radio that Kirill Marchenko is one that showed up to camp out of shape

    Dan Milstein
    @HockeyAgent1
Kirill’s conditioning has NEVER been a topic. Andrew’s relevance, on the other hand…
