And Daniel Briere did not help things. Players must love him. But if I were a GM, he would surely be on my blacklist.

It’s literally only a matter of time.

When a team is bad and has 25 million in cap space or is 20 million below the cap floor, they will eventually grossly overpay to acquire talent. This is exactly why the NHLPA wanted a cap floor when they created the salary cap.

so 10-11 mil is the rate now for a 2nd line/ low end 1st liner
in my mind players that used to get 5-8 mil

    fun times

Cap ceiling goes up, cap floor goes up, player salaries go up.

It was always crucial to draft well and that will not change. The three years of ELC and the RFA years is where teams get the best value.

Were Seattle and Vancouver on his only trade me to team? For the sake of argument, let’s say yes.
Both of those teams would see Rielly as contract dump by the Leafs and would request a high pick in order to take him on with little coming back to the Leafs.
Otherwise he’d be traded already, no?

Again, whether they were or they weren’t, it doesn’t matter. His short list are the teams he can’t block. The rest are teams you’d have to “convince” him to join.

Would they really? Seattle and Vancouver have cap space and are scrambling to find talent. Rielly, being from the West Coast, is easier to sell on those locations. Seattle has Dunn signed for only one more year. If the Leafs swapped Dunn for Rielly, the Leafs get an expiring contract and Seattle gets a puck mover signed longer term to a cheaper contract compared to what future UFAs will demand. That’s not a dump, it’s a win-win. Both were 35-40 point players and minus players. Just a fresh start for both guys going back to closer to home.

So no, it’s not a straight dump especially if they Leafs take back another type of “bad” contract.

Like I said, he hasn’t been traded because he’s one of the boys and the Leafs don’t have the balls to push him out the door by force.

Rielly would not have required a premium pick to get rid of him. Seattle and Vancouver both still have 17 million in cap space.

And yet everybody else seems to be able to do it but the Leafs are run by a bunch of pussies, too scared to force bad players with bad contracts out

Why give up a premium pick (Remember Marleau trade) to move a player with a NMC.
    For me, that doesn’t sense.
better to keep the player and hope during the season can be moved

With what some guys are getting paid, Rielly would not have required a premium pick to get rid of him. Seattle and Vancouver both still have 17 million in cap space. If the Leafs had taken back even a 3 or 4 million dollar contract, Rielly is a drop in the bucket. Hell, I’d have taken Vince Dunn from Seattle in return with the same cap hit on an expiring contract.

Keeping the player makes the team worse defensively. And his offensive ice-time, like the PP, won’t exist with bringing in Raddysh which only reduces his value further and makes it harder to move him.

Rielly is still here because he’s “one of the boys”, not because they couldn’t get rid of him if they really put some effort in.

Trading players with M-NTC or NMC is a difficult thing to do but not impossible.
It’s not like waiving your magic wand and poooffff, they are traded.

The Leafs are hoping that Blueger and Joshua rediscover their magic they had in Vancouver.

And yet everybody else seems to be able to do it but the Leafs are run by a bunch of pussies, too scared to force bad players with bad contracts out because heaven forbid a future, unknown UFA might get skiddish about being overpaid by the Leafs.

What magic? Mediocre magic on a shit team? I like Blueger and Joshua has some size but that duo wasn’t any kind of magic.
