Great point Steve. I’m sure this will be the trade that comes back to haunt the Hawks this year and for many years to come. I know you’re playing the long game on the Jones for Knight trade unlike most of us who have declared it an emphatic win…but is there a trade you approve of from KFC or any other Hawk GM?

Earl, if the Hawks miss the playoffs by a couple of points. Remember that NHL playoff contenders keep a veteran goalie around for emergencies. KD traded his insurance policy to meet the cap floor a couple of days before he needed him.

Weighing in on Reichel/Chinakhov (though I’ll probably regret it 🤣)
Lucas Reichel has recently proven to be nearly worthless in trade value.
The Hawks traded him for a 4th round pick.
He played 14 games for VAN, with 1 assist and no goals.
Vancouver, besides having the 2nd worst pts % in the league, is a struggling franchise lately.
Even so, they did not value him enough to keep him on the roster.
They put him through waivers, and all 31 other teams, who could have had him for free declined to take him.As for their point totals:
In their most recent 82 NHL games:
Reichel has 27 points, or 0.33ppg. (27 pts per full season)
Chinakhov has 44 points, or 0.54ppg. (44 pts per full season)
In their most recent 41 games (1/2 season):
Reichel has 14 points, or 0.34ppg. (28 pts per full season)
Chinakhov has 26 points, or 0.63ppg. (52 pts per full season)Though by no means comprehensive, it gives solid evidence that
a) Chinakhov is improving as he gains experience
b) Reichel is not improving, and might just be a ~28 point per season player in the NHLMoving beyond point totals:
Chinakhov is over 50% in Corsi-for while Reichel is at 41%
even though:
Chinakhov gets only ~45% O-zone starts while Reichel has had over 57% O-zone starts in his careerBoth players have elite speed, nearly identical rank in top speed bursts.
Chinakhov has a top ranked slapshot for a forward, as high as 98mph.Obviously this can keep going way down into the weeds, but the fact that every single NHL team

That’s insane Steve and yes you weren’t getting that back. It’s why I call it an act because your expectations aren’t based in any sort of reality.
Here…let me help you out a little and explain how this works. First round picks are valuable when a) They haven’t been yet made or b) when said first rounder lives up to their draft status. Also combining two former first round draft picks who don’t appear to be more than fringe NHL’ers doesn’t necessarily get you what you’re looking for and it certainly wasn’t getting you a somewhat useful player and a 2nd and 3rd rounder. You’re higher than the ISS if you think that’s a realistic return for Reichel and Allan based solely on the fact they were former first rounders. Just ludicrous.
I’m not declaring KFC anything but that was one of those trades that’s a win/win. Knight is still playing great hockey. One bad game represents his coming back to earth numbers but I know that doesn’t fit your narrative.
Also, I’m not that guy, so as usual you’re wrong. I was never the guy crying about trades Stanbo made or the guy that thought that those Cup teams were ALL the handiwork of Dale Tallon.
To my original point, in the world of spilled milk, this trade wouldn’t fill a thimble…and yet here we are.
Chinakov has 79 points in 208 games. Reichel has 59 points in 188 games. You think it is insane and ludicrous to get Chinakov’s return for Reichel and Allan?
A thousand times yes! It’s unrealistic and it’s apples and oranges. You’re looking at stats and not what was happening on the ice. Look at what Reichel is doing in VAN and the Hawks may have been lucky to get a 4th.
Did Chinakov look as lost to you as Reichel has over the past few seasons. He looked salvageable. Reichel not so much.
Take Reichel’s first season out of the equation where he looked like he could be something and then look at the next three where the guy couldn’t carve out ice time for himself on a team crying for any sort of talent and skill. You think you’re getting back a useful player and 2nd and 3rd round picks for that and a depth dman who had fallen further down the prospect charts?
If so…I gotta bridge to sell ya.
