ParticipantI left my horse out in the rain, but thankfully I remembered to store all of the tack in the barn.
You might say I have a DRY SADDLE.-PDO Speedwagon
bahahaha good one.
On a semi-serious note anyone suggesting Marner is anywhere near worth what Dry Saddle is must be smoking some serious crack.
Watching Mc David and Dry Saddle and comparing them to Matthews and Marner is simply looking at ‘how it should be done’ vs ‘how it doesn’t get done’.
Maybe a Matthews / Willy combo would work better – it would be more like Dry Saddle and McJesus if you think about it. Marner rarely shoots and has an absolute muffin of a shot when he does but Willy can snipe with the best in the league and is a very underrated playmaker. Matthews is an excellent playmaker and as we know an incredible sniper (when healthy).
I hope once Marner is gone AM and WN are put together and we can see.

ParticipantIt suggests that Marner outperformed his $10.9m contract by providing $12m in value. Since I think ALL of Dom’s valuations are too high by around 15%, I think Marner probably was providing closer to $10m in value – which feels about right, because those who favour him have no problem with him getting north of $12.5m and those who don’t like him think that $8m is about right.
I’ve never been a fan of Dom’s model and I think you’re right about him over/under evaluating players by a margin.
If you only consider regular season success, I think Marner was paid close to what he brought to the table. Tavares was clearly overpaid but still produced enough to be considered a success as far as UFA signing goes.
It truly is the playoffs results that make these numbers don’t work as you cannot pay these salaries to player and never see them take over a game and give you a chance to win it all. The only player that did it on the Leafs was Nylander but it was also followed by disappearing acts at other times…. where a show of force from Matthews or Marner would have made the difference, probably.

ParticipantBut, I’m cheering for Florida. Is my MVP award revoked?!?! – MVP Whipper
No but it’s under protest for you cheering for a Marchand cup win.
I want to see that rat cry, same for Tkachuk and Bennett. Fuck Florida they got their cup they can go sit on the beach and have sand crabs to bite them right in the pee hole for all I care about them. lol

ParticipantMy gawd the leagues has ruined any momentum they had for the finals with the long break and the upcoming schedule is even worse.
Next game tomorrow, ok good thats normal.
Game 3 Monday? WTF
Game 4 Thursday? Jesus
Game 5 Saturday – ok back to normal
Game 6 Tuesday 17th – Jesus
Game 7 on JUNE 20th!!!! WTF..I get the NBA finals are on…but gimme a break
Agreed and I know there are other considerations like if the applicable rinks have other stuff booked like concerts but this is just dumb, especially if they are really trying to ‘grow the sport’ in the US.The long gaps between games just give casual fans the chance to forget it and the drama etc.
Not shocking from the NHL who aside from having one of if not the greatest sport on earth as their product can’t get out of their own way and as a result or the joke of the bigger pro sports leagues.
Shitty scheduling, not nearly enough marketing, officiating that is just insanely puzzling to even a life long fan, Supplementary discipline processes and results that make zero sense, teams in markets they shouldn’t be while markets who would thrive go without, a terrible hard cap system that forces the anchor franchises to essentially keep the shitty, terrible ones afloat, no equalization with respect to taxes and the inequity that tax situations create, etc. etc. etc.
Imagine if the people who run say the NFL top to bottom ran the NHL? I think the NFL is the gold standard.

ParticipantIf we let Marner and JT walk, that’s 2 of 4 gone. Not sure we get as much value back trying to replace JT though. Would rather keep him at an actual hometown discount and add another 2C.

Ultimately, to me, it’s about value. Now I don’t care if people agree with Dom Luszczyszyn’s financial models, per se. There’s room to argue in there, but what it does is set a baseline for what value is.
It suggests that Marner outperformed his $10.9m contract by providing $12m in value. It also suggests that Tavares is worth about $9m.
Using that 15% concept, if you’re not getting Marner for around $11m, you’re overpaying him anyway. If you’re getting Tavares for less than $7.5m, you’re probably getting value.
Resigning a good player who wants to take a significant pay cut to stay seems like a no-brainer to me.

ParticipantIt may not matter if we “change the DNA” around our core players because our core players simply do not elevate their game the way they do on Florida and Edmonton.
How many shifts do you think Maurice matches 3C Lindell on McJesus? I’m betting ZERO. It’ll be all Barkov. Just remember that Maurice did match Lindell against Matthews and he was able to shut his ass down.
When your stars cannot dominate another team’s 3rd line, you’re simply not winning.
