its not just minus marner. you replace him with 8mil and 5 mil players.

who are better playoff warriors. dont care about the reg season. They have to go through good teams no matter what. They had home ice, didnt help. just get better..in the playoffs

Ok, but who are these players that they are going to get for $8m and $5m that are playoff warriors that want to play for the leafs?

The Leafs were 29th at 5v5 expected goals last year; that’s lottery team level right there.

They won the division because they had excellent goaltending and a much better defensive group.

Matthews doesn’t need Marner to exceed at this point in his career. I would say Marner needs Matthews far more than the other way around.

Marner plays slow, was incapable of getting in on the forecheck, so any winger capable of doing that is going to suit Berube’s systems.

With Marner gone, they can build out a balanced team, it’s really that simple.

    Not sure about that.
So far we know, matthews passes more when marner isnt on his wing.
Marner scores more when Matthews isnt on this line.
Everyone who plays with Marner sees their points go up.
Matthews can still score (just not the past year or so) in short term without marner
The leafs have a great record with Matthews out of the line up and Marner in. That drops a little when its the other way around.
Marner and matthews can, have been and probably will still be successful without eachother. Its just not true that marner “needs” matthews.
Now, I do agree the money and team need to be more balanced and that something needs to change….and right now the easiest thing to change are the two FA’s.
But we always seem to think that throwing money at FA’s will solve everything…..with marner leaving, we’ll have $25m to spend. Knies will take up about $7m of that. So $18m to get a top 6 winger and center and improve our bottom 6…..and we dont have any 1st rounders for the 3 years.
    That’s tight.
Also, will our old D be able to stay healthy most of the year?
Can our goaltending repeat how stellar they were this past season?
Also, other teams will improve as well.
Im sure change is coming…..just not sure the change will make the grass any greener.
And I get that running it back is nuts as well.
    The leafs have leafed themselves……..again.

Leafs get 9 goals, 29 points.

Marner gets to laugh as hard as Kadri did as he wins a Cup.

    Great deal!

you gotta face it, Marner will NOT be back with the Leafs.
Don’t forget Karlsson was hurt at the beginning of last season and missed like 30+ games.
When healthy, Karlsson can put up point on the board.

    Exactly this.

Leafs fans paved paradise, put up a parking lot (not really, but my way of coping is to have fun with it).

Agree here, I think there are some parallels with Florida. Mike Kelly explains it here

Panthers brought in Maurice and moved on from Huberdeau, scored 115 points..but so what
changed the makeup and playing style. no more running it back

Now they are going all in with Berube, so they have to get players to fit his style. soft Mitch hasnt worked. and paying 14 mil wont fix it

We don’t know who does and who doesn’t and who is going to stay where they are and so on.

Bennett and Marchand both grew up Leaf fans and Bennett is from Holland’s Landing. He expressed interest in coming here before. Marchand’s requirement is to be in the east and play for a contender. Both of these guys fit in that bill. Would they come here? No one knows, but the opportunity at least exists.

Brandon Tanev has publicly said that wants to finish his career playing alongside his brother. Now would be a pretty good time to consider that.

There are players out there that would remake the bottom-6 on this team significantly better than it is. Kampf, Jarnkrok, Robertson and Holmberg would all go; Reaves would ride the bus with the Marlies. McMann, Lorentz and Laughton could stay. Right now I have penciled in Knies at $7.5 and Tavares at $5.5 and that leaves you with $18.5m. Bennett, Marchand, Tanev, any of Suter, Bjugstad or Faksa (particularly Faksa, because I liked how he played in this year’s playoffs at any rate).

Depending on contracts – assuming around 8 for Bennett, 4.5 for Marchand and then 2 and 2.5 for Tanev and Faksa, you have a bit of wiggle room sitting there for 13th F and 7th D as needed – Cowan, Quillan, Steeves (if he resigns), or someone else – and guys like Myers, Danford or Webber could slot in the the 7 spot.

When you move outside of the Bennett and Marchand type players in this year’s crop I don’t see a lot that “changes the DNA” – Duchene, Ehlers, Boeser, Giroux, Mangiapane, Kane – good players, but older to old – and not really carrying the reputation of being hard to play against.

So maybe this year isnt the off season the leafs sign long term deals….sign short term/1 year deals if possible, with talented enough players to get you into the playoffs. Then put more money into next years off season. Better players it seems.
But Im not sure Marchand will be as affective here as he is in Florida. In florida hes on the 3rd line….here, he will mostly like be used on 2nd.
If bennett would sign for $8m per….sure….but I think for Toronto its closer to $10 per…..not interested in that

It’s simply amazing those guys were able to pass the WWE’s strict drug tests.

Edit: what happened to the Hulkster vs. Ultimate Warrior image?
