Ffs even Matthews started on the 3rd line.

You probably forgot what actually happened during Matthews rookie season due to brain damage so I’ll remind you with the facts; Matthews was #1 in Leafs forwards ice time as a rookie at 17 (15 EV, 2PP) min per game.
With a line-up like the one I proposed, McKenna would play 18 min per game and be sheltered by playing beside Matthews whereas Matthews had absolutely nobody at his level when he was a rookie beside him. It would also include McKenna and the 1st line starting in the O-Zone and playing the PP while the 3rd and 4th lines taking care of the D-Zone and the PK. Distributing responsibilities takes stress off of the top-six players who mostly only play one-way hockey anyway.
If McKenna’s career is ruined, it will be because he’s small, physically weak, disengaged and defensively inept, not because he played on the 1st line beside Matthews as a rookie. The absolute worst place for McKenna to be is on a 3rd line, playing with muckers, trying to shutdown top lines. If that’s the path they want for McKenna, then return him to the NCAA and just let him develop there.
But we all know that the only hope the Leafs have of keeping Matthews is giving him a playmaker on his wing and that’s exactly why they prayed as they drafted McKenna. This is their desperate attempt to keep this core happy and together while Matthews will be desperate to rebuild his value as he walks himself towards UFA status and wants to maximize his next contract value.

The Rielly soap opera is getting annoying. The Leafs are slightly over the Cap, but moving Rielly would alleviate that problem. It still would leave them about $7M under the Cap. The Leafs should call it a day on the trade front, unless there’s an opportunity to move Rielly for a 2nd rounder somewhere. Still, the defense is vulnerable. One key injury and it falls apart.
and they still need to sign McKenna to an ELC which is going to be 1M+ per year on a 3 yr contract
If the Leafs wanted Werenski and it was actually possible to get him, moving Rielly and Joshua frees up over 10m. its not that hard.
They also have assets to make a deal, its whether they want to pony up or not.They havent moved Rielly yet, I assume because the offers have not been enticing enough. But i dont doubt he could be moved.
but it sounds like Werenski toss water on that fire and its out…so move onLeafs didn’t get Werenski because CBJ wants a huge return that includes Knies, Cowan, Danford, 1st round pick etc. and luckily the Leafs package didn’t include Knies. Werenski without an extension is a huge gamble and the Leafs would be giving up pretty much every valuable piece under 25 not named McKenna. Not worth it. It just creates another hole they can’t fill.
If moving Rielly and Joshua is that easy, they should be gone already. Send Joshua to DET for a 4th and send Rielly to SEA for McCann. Done.

He’s at his peak right now. A package like Rielly, Stolarz and the Colorado 1st is as much as they should consider paying. Keep the current core, keep the young core and add to the back end. The bottom 6 looks set as does the top 6. Defense is where they need to upgrade the most. Werenski should be the target.
Werenski isn’t going anywhere and definitely not to the Leafs, especially now that they have no assets and no cap space left. He would cost Knies. Columbus is probably just going to keep him for the short term and either move him for a king’s ransom at the deadline or give him 15 million AAV to stay in Columbus.
The Leafs can’t even get rid of Rielly, how the fuck can they be expected to get Werenski for him, Stolarz and a late 1st?
