He wants a six or seven-year contract worth $42 million and he’s 38 years old at the start of the season. It’s retarded. The absolute max you could give to Bob without creating an albatross contract situation is 3 years. I could live with a 3 year, 7 AAV contract. But 42 million over 7 years, no fucking chance.
Other than using the Leafs to increase his money either by getting overpaid or creating the illusion of multiple offers during negotiations, why would he? He could win another Cup in sunny Florida. He could do the same in Carolina, Vegas or Edmonton. Why Toronto? To be buddies with Stolarz? It doesn’t add up. If he asks 7×6 from the Leafs, maybe a contender gives him 5×6 and that’s what he’s really after.
And for the Leafs, do you really want to end up with a 40-45 year old goalie making 7 AAV? The Leafs got some magic out of Belfour at the end of his career back in the day (that’s probably the dumbass fantasy Chayka is trying to recreate) but the reality is, with all the issues the Leafs still have, Bob is unlikely to be good enough to carry the Leafs as he approaches 40 much less beyond 40.
It’s just a bad piece of business for both sides. And this is coming from a guy who was 150% behind signing Bob to his 7 year, 70 million dollar deal (instead of Tavares) when he left Columbus. At that time, Bob was exactly what the Leafs needed. But not now, not at 38-45. I’d literally rather have Skinner or Andersen or any other stop gap veteran for 2 or 3 years until one of the Leafs prospects takes over the net or another, younger, more viable option presents itself.
And this is so strange coming from what is supposed to be an “advanced stats” GM who can’t take a shit without using analytics. Should be really obvious that giving a 38 year old goalie a 7 year contract is absolutely retarded.
Hope it doesn’t happen but with the Leafs, the most retarded outcome is usually what happens because it’s the Leafs and they’re an organization run by retards.
