JR & PA were an abject failure. About all they were decent at was UFA signings & getting Abby up & running.
Bad news is FA still the owner.
The good news is RJ & company look like they have better vision & patience planned. Passing on D for CM will be their 1st measuring stick. In hindsight they could’ve traded down to as far as 9oa & let Verhoeff or a other D fall into their lap.
This season Raty Ohgren & Lekerimaki should be given a full opportunity to play to potential. Same goes for Buium & Willander & DPetey. If Cootes impresses even more this camp add him to the list or to Abby.
Canucks have a bunch of 2/3 Cs including the Swedish Disappointment guy. They still need a 1C they should bring drafting top five for two more years.Likker doesn’t seem like an NHL guy to em. Just my take I may be wrong.JR and Allvin were stupid, Worst management ever so I am not sure they knew what the hell they were doing when drafting trading or signing contracts.
You can start with Vasily Podkolzin as a comparable. Both 1st round picks (granted Wright a higher pick).
Both reclamation projects. Pod netted a 4th.

I’m not sure people are considering more than “do we need him right now”… It’s more than that. Do we stop drafting C’s now because we don’t need them outside of a top ranked C? Shouldnt we wait to see how Cootes/Malholtra/Rogowski/ track before we feel we have enough? Canucks need young players. He’s 21. He turns into a tradeable C if you manage to develop him. If you get him for a reasonable price and it works out, he will be worth more than they gave for him in a trade. This is a rebuild kind of move if it’s cost is reasonable. If he turns into a good player, then why would you not need that? Management clearly has interest so they must be considering what I’m speaking of.
That Podz trade was screwy though. It’s pretty obvious RT has no patience for Russian prospects. It didnt take long for that to show in Philly after chasing Podz out of town. He didnt give Podz enough time or opportunity to call it a reclamation. He was just slow to develop is all. Immediately after leaving the Canucks he was better with or without McDavid. RT was the problem. Limiting him to 59 games over 2 seasons was a mistake after a decent rookie showing. Sometimes he got scratched after stepping up even. Quick to scratch after a game where he had some poor shifts.
I think the same thing is happening with Wright. Plus SW is a C, Podz a winger. All thing equal, the C is going to cost more.

People seem to be higher on Lekkerimaki than me. Fair enough.
I think SW will be a upgrade on Lekker. I don’t look at it as giving up a young player… I see it as upgrading a prospect. Quantity is good for the prospect pool but quality is even better.
Don’t forget there is that 6’5 Russian centre also on a one way contract, If it’s for Debrusk sure why not, but I am not giving up a lot for Wright.
Some centers can play wing. Some can start in the AHL(Cootes) and hopefully there is a Petey trade.
I’d rather have a log jam of C’s over wingers. At least C’s can easily transition to wing unlike wingers to C. For example, I see Brooks Rogowski maybe ending up a winger eventually. 6’7″ 3rd line wing and penalty killer. I wouldn’t complain.

For starters SW wanting to come to Vancouver is a good sign. Leaving Seattle says plenty. Reading between the lines he’s not confident in their organization & probably disappointed on how he has been developed & deployed. Sounds like he has checked out.
Onto if he’s a fit in Vancouver. Imo he needs a change of scenery. As it sits after the last draft & current roster & other prospects in the system already it doesn’t make sense to trade for him. Trading out any young D is a non starter. Passing on D in the draft & loading up on C’s & F’s further establishes that. Add to that next draft is C heavy with very good prospects barring lucking out & getting Dupont makes it even more not a fit. Currently there is EP40, Rossi, Malhotra, Cootes, Raty, Rogowski, Sasson, Patterson & Chytil but expect him moving to the wing for health reasons. That is a long list of C’s ready or not. No real standout elite 1C plenty of 2-3-4C’s. SW might ceiling out as a 1C not betting on it. 2C if elite more possible.
If an offer is made I go with Lekerimaki/‘28 2nd take it or leave it. That would also assume EP40 gone sooner or later even move him to the wing & keep Rossi as 1C til pushed down.
I conclude with I don’t see a trade happening unless many dominos fall or C prospects moved to the wing. Sorry if TLDR lol
