ParticipantOf course this is true….players arent concerned about their cap….for the most part.
And this is why I’m saying it’s only mattering to the star players at this point. You’re still 100% correct for the 98% remainder of the league.
Dozzer
ParticipantLike I said, I used the forbes tax calculator…I simply entered the salary, single person and selected area.
As previously mentioned, “not sure how accurate it is”Also, you have the exchange rate as well. the USD goes much further here……for now.
This is why I’m saying we’re finally hitting that point when players are starting to care. Marner wants $7 million take home. At $12 mill he gets that in Vegas where he wouldn’t in Toronto. Fans seem to believe players care more about their cap hit than their earnings for some reason, do you care more about what you cost your employer than what you earn?
Dozzer
ParticipantThe era doesnt really matter….there was still money to be had for the big boys…and no one was flocking to florida….they simply werent winning.
I already said its a factor…but its not “the” factor….no one would be signing for less to play for the panthers if they werent a winning franchise the past 3 years.
Winning is still the driver for most players. Winning, weather, taxes, anonymity, family.Mitch was offered $13.5….he wasnt staying for any amount imo, his mind was already made…his ego cant handle playing in Toronto.
The average nhl salary in 2003 was $1.7m
Now its about $3.4mI just ran a forbes tax calculator for a single person in florida and Ontario at a $12m salary
Florida take home was $7.6m after taxes
Ontario take home was $6.4m after taxesNot sure how accurate it is…but only about $1.2m difference.
What numbers are you using?
Florida: $12 x 0.63 = $7.56
Ontario: $12 x 0.4647 = $5.58
You might want to relearn the calculator.
Florida taxation: 37%
Ontario taxation: 53.53%Dozzer
ParticipantTrue, but I’m sure they’re also currently doing that, so any change to the CBA will still have a pretty serious impact on the tax gymnastics they’re able to do.
Meh, then they’ll just start doing synchronized swimming taxes
Dozzer
ParticipantYou have to wonder if this is going to make it harder for the Leafs to re-sign Matthews once his current contract is up. This new CBA will literally cost Matthews millions out of pocket.
Not as bad as I thought it would be like I mentioned. I’m sure a banker/investor/etc could play the game beautifully
Dozzer
ParticipantYes, so starting in 2026 all new contracts will have this restriction. Existing contracts are grandfathered.
And thank you
Wonder if that will hurt keeping someone like Matthews around.
Meh… just hammered out the numbers quick and it would cost him about $1 million and that’s only if every game was in Toronto, I did it very generally so I’m guessing it wouldn’t be too bad of an adjustment for the leafs to make with bonuses to out of country players
Dozzer
ParticipantNew contracts. You can’t redo existing contracts
???? thank you

ParticipantBack in 2008 top players were making decent cash $7 -$9m (for that time)….no one was flocking to florida to play
In 2001 – 2003 top players were making $9 to $11.5m…..no one was flocking to florida to play.
Winning…changes everything.
Of course there are loop holes and tax breaks or lower taxes that players can take advantage of now to save money…of course that helps (along with weather)…not disputing that. But winning is the honey that attracts the bears and ants. If florida, tampa and dallas were garbage losing teams you think players would sign for less to play there?
Nope.
They take less, because they win….and they’ve built winning cultures…or even cultures that may be a “team first” culture. Which seems to be the exact opposite of what was built in Toronto.
Toronto got cocky and lazy….they thought everyone would want to play here cause its the “mecca of hockey”….so they seem to stop building a winning brand…they missed the boat and even homegrown talent got greedy or simply didnt want to stay and play.
But winning…can change that.
This notion that its all about taxes is BS…it helps….but so does winning and having a team first winning culture. And of course the league will never do anything help northern teams (except pittsburgh), for sure its all about the southern teams…need new fans.
Do you actually believe Marner would have stayed here for $12 million? He’d be $14.5-$15.
$7-$9 is nothing more than upper average now.
2001-03 was a different era without a cap.
It’s a pretty basic thing to factor. Star players essentially want $7+ million take home post taxation. Yes, other factors matter, but that one is huge.
Dozzer
Participantin the new CBA the signing bonus is now capped at 60% – Signing bonuses will be capped at 60 percent of the full player’s salary
so a little advantage the Leafs had they are looking at as a problem…naturallyalso Jays giving 2015 vibes, but also how is that 10 years ago
Is that only for contracts moving forward? Matthews’ bonuses after the new cap kicks in are at 77% and 70% for the last two years of his contract.
Dozzer
ParticipantThe culture starts with winning, its simply not all about taxes….sure it may help but if you have a winning culture with a good locker room, players will go there.
Tampa, dallas and florida all had low tax rates for decades, its only until they started winning constantly that they began attracting so many players.
Nothing will change here in toronto until they begin to win in the playoffs.
No Fake it’s becoming $ now. We never saw it before because the players didn’t make enough. Most of them still don’t. It’s the $10 mill plus players that it’s truly effecting.
Matthews makes league minimum for a reason and gets everything as a bonus while in Arizona. He saves 14.03% taxation that way. This year he literally saves a little more than $2 million.
You’ll see this more and more for a bit, and that’s because the league is literally trying to build up the popularity of the sport in the southern US so why stop it?
Dozzer
ParticipantWhat’s sickening is the NHL under Bettman doesn’t address this issue. They want a salary cap, but still give teams in the south an advantage. Knowing how much that the Leafs contribute in revenue sharing, it’s a slap in the face to the fanbase who gives money to franchises that continues to have an advantage, thanks to the tax issues. Bettman is a clown and needs to go!
Truth is this is a business and where it needs to be sold is the south not in Canada.
Stop thinking the sport comes first, money does.
And yes the money is still coming from Canada and northern US, but that’s not the targeted goal.

ParticipantI’m sure he’ll find another topic to bitch about.
Oh I doubt he needs to find it. My guess is he already has an organized list of topics. My question is his timing of change.

ParticipantI was enjoying the cry fest a few days ago but UG is fucking relentless. He needs to STFU about it already. It’s done. Marner is gone.
I’m so hoping that when the leafs face the knights this year that Knies just levels Marner lol
Dozzer
ParticipantI’m gonna need some cheese and crackers with all the whining going on.
Everytime line 1 is on the ice and doesn’t score by the time they go back to the bench this upcoming season UG is going to say “see?! The leafs would have scored if Marner was still here!”
Dozzer
ParticipantMarner is talented but UG’s crying is making him gone so fucking worth it that I’m loving it lol
