I think it’s just that they need the cap space badly to sign Bouchard because Dry Saddle jumps from 8.5 last year to 14M this year.

They have $16m in cap space…$10 of that will be eaten up by bouchard.

As per Frank Seravalli, Marner’s family are in Vegas looking at houses. This would be a good landing spot for him. However, there are many on this team who know what it takes to win, and Marner might get a rude awakening from his teamates when he tries to coast through the playoffs as is his habit. I don’t think proven winners would just sit back and watch him coast, they would lay into him hard. Perhaps this is exactly what he needs.I dont think he “coast”, I think it just becomes too challenging for him when the game tightens up…he recoils.
But if vegas is the spot….I hope its a sign and trade. Try to get Hertl or Karlsson back.This means vegas will be doing their LTIR special with Pietro

The Canadian economy isnt “garbage”, the GDP grew, inflation is down and one of lowest in the G7, household spending is up, trade barriers between most provinces are beginning to lift. Tariffs and subsequent unemployment are a concern of course, but had the orangerapist not F’d with the global economy, unemployment was slowly getting better.

Seriously though …..Duchene at 4.5M in Dallas gets to shove ~2.9M in his pocket every year. Leafs will have to go ~$6M x 4 for JT to do the same.
Also ..I’m sure Tree is pointing out Nelson is a year younger (and will age/skate better) then JT so that 7.5M comp needs to be viewed accordingly. Fine, you’re a year older so maybe 7.5M x 2 is the comp ..now stick 3 years on the end at $4M, $1M, and $1M …and now you get that down to $21M over 5 yrs. Maybe you have to bump it a bit to account for tax differences.My limits for JT would be something like …

sure, but he certainly could have gotten more regardlessSure I guess. But its easier to make a deal when you are already pulling in $2.5- 3m per year without a contract.
Also, I dont believe Dallas has high taxes.
In JT’s situation, he has to agree to a deal thats competitive to what he could get on the open market while also making sure the structure doesnt get him into tax trouble again.
The leafs also have Marner and knies to deal with as well.So a little more complicated I guess.
Im sure the leafs will overpay whoever they sign in the 2 weeks

If the Leafs go long-term, that might help bridge the gap, but neither side is there yet. Both sides understand they’ll have to move, and with a week before July 1st, Tavares is still more likely to re-sign than not.

I believe Duchene is also getting paid by Nashville for the next 4 years…another $2.5m per. So he’s gonna make about $7m per season in total.
