ParticipantThe problem is they need a #1 defenseman. Just getting another top 4 plug-in doesn’t move the needle.
I’m happy with Sanheim as their #1 Dman. He’s likely in the Top 20 for Dmen in the league but they need a helluva lot more around him and behind him. He’d look even better if the Flyers had that. A Top 4 plug-in would move the needle for THIS team. Even FLA went out and traded for Jones at the deadline.

ParticipantCan you explain what 2 surpluses means.
I do not see the upside you see in any way, shape, or form.
They have six picks in the first two rounds. How is that NOT a surplus?
1st (No. 6 overall): Own.
• 1st (No. 22 overall): Acquired from Colorado in 2024 trade of D Sean Walker.
• 1st (No. 31/32 overall): Acquired from Edmonton for 32nd overall pick in 2024 (conditional to 2025 or 2026).
• 2nd: Own.
• 2nd: Conditional pick acquired from Columbus in 2023 trade of Ivan Provorov after they elected to keep their selection in 2024.
• 2nd: Acquired from Anaheim in 2024 trade of F Cutter Gauthier.
• 2nd: Acquired from Calgary in 2025 trade of Fs Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee. They have about $19M in cap space with only York essential to resign. How much would you pay York? I’m admittedly terrible about what these guys can pull, even in arbitration, but they’ll still have $13M+ to sign a solid vet Top 4 Dman and a goalie. Use those picks well, give the kids a chance up front and let them develop. I’m hoping that’s the plan.

ParticipantFlyers are the next Florida. All the pieces are in place to make it happen. With their excellent management team only a matter of when not if.
The Flyers have two surpluses, draft picks and enough cap space to sign a Top 4 dman and a goalie this off season. They have an upside even if you don’t want to see it.
FlyerFrank
ParticipantIt was mostly drafting made them both contenders. Yes, the Tkachuk trade helped put Florida over the top, but outside of said trade, the moves both teams made were complimentary players that added depth needed to contend. The Flyers are nowhere near that point.
You mean like stealing Bennett and Reinhart as well as Tkachuk? Yes, they made great trades too. The #1 and #2 overall picks still with them, Barkov and Ekblad, have been great. Lundell is a key contributor. Huberdeau has had two great seasons out of 13. The Flyers had two #2 overalls the last several years and got JVR and Patrick out of it. FLA’s drafting, overall, has not been as fantastic as you make it out to be. They were built with shrewd acquisitions.
FlyerFrank
ParticipantAre you seriously implying the current Philadelphia Flyers are in the same position as the Panthers and Oilers?
It’s nice that they made those moves, but they were already contenders.
The moves FLA and EDM made are what made them contenders.
FlyerFrank
Participantyou look how they were constructed. are you that blind to see how those cores was assembled? flyers nowhere close to either team in how they were assembled. you live in fantasyland.
keep signing mid level dreck will keep the flyers exactly where they are.
Edmonton has only been a top team the last four years. Florida has only been a top team the last four years. Edmonton absolutely built more through the draft. EDM has two Dmen they drafted, FLA only one. They drafted Ekblad, traded for Jones and the rest are free agents. The Flyers have draft picks to build up the forwards.
FlyerFrank
ParticipantNo one close in the next 5 years. They have one D prospect who projects to be an NHL player. One. Outside of Bonk they have nothing but potential bottom pair guys, if they even pan out.
You need to take a closer look at how the current top teams were actually constructed, not how Hextall and Fletcher deconstructed the Flyers.
FlyerFrank
ParticipantTired of wasting money on mid level guys. if going to over pay get top end at this point. ‘Now top end wont want to come here is the problem without a big overpay. flyers may not have much choice to get ekblad (as an example) for 7 years 9-10 million per.
Ceci was a Top 4 guy for a team that went to the conference finals. Ekblad won’t sign here. That’s pure fantasy. Take a closer look at how the current top teams were actually constructed, not how Hextall and Fletcher deconstructed the Flyers.

ParticipantHow is what I posted propping him up as a superstar?
He is a young vet who may not want a long term deal if he sees no path to contention. In that case he may want a short term deal. Then move on if he doesn’t like what he sees.
They have no one close to supplanting him.
Why would the Flyers want to sign York to a long term deal?
No one close this coming year and likely next. Which is why you sign him . . . to a bridge deal.
FlyerFrank
ParticipantHow on earth you draw the conclusion I am making him sound like a superstar is very odd
Because you wrote this:
York would want a bridge. Test the coaching waters out first. See how the team is constructed in the next few years.
I prefer the Flyers sign York to a bridge deal. I don’t necessarily think he’s a guy you can literally build your D around. If he is around for years to come, I would hope somebody comes in and supplants him on the top pair. Again, they have no D prospects that will help this year. Maybe a couple will get a look due to injury.
FlyerFrank
ParticipantMaybe it’s me though seems you said let him walk.
Not any time soon. He’s a top pairing guy here on a defense that needs an upgrade badly. You’re making it sound like he’s some superstar who is in a position to see how the new coaching staff does and see how management builds the team the next couple or more years. It’s not like he’s another Makar. He’s not a top pairing guy on, I would say, most teams in the league.
FlyerFrank
ParticipantWhy would you let him walk? That makes no sense at all.
I said it’s not going to happen soon but I’d like to see the Flyers build a Cup winning capable defense. York is getting close, experience wise, to being what he is as an NHL player. I hope he surprises me and takes a big step up this year. If he doesn’t, they need to upgrade the slot. That doesn’t necessarily mean letting him walk, that’s why I said hopefully. I don’t see him topping out as a top pairing Dman on a legitimate Cup contender. Sanheim, on the other hand, I do.
FlyerFrank
ParticipantAlso agree York would want a bridge. Test the coaching waters out first. See how the team is constructed in the next few years.
Hopefully, the team is constructed in such a way they can afford to let him walk as a UFA. But for now, he’s a top pairing guy here. That won’t change this season.
FlyerFrank
ParticipantI hope they do get some combination of Soucy, Ceci, and Hague. Would be par for the course.
10 million for 7 years may get Ekblads attention.
I’d be happy as a clam with Ceci and Hague. Two holes in one off season filled. Might even be overkill depending on Ristolainen. Watching Florida this playoffs, you can see how well they support the puck and watching the Flyers last season, you could see how lacking they were in that too often. The D is a big part of that. Guys who can fill one or two holes on the blueline are available. There are UFAs, teams that are cash strapped. Of course, they could make an offer for Marner . . . .
FlyerFrank
ParticipantLast thing the Flyers need is another 3rd pair defender.
A 3rd pairing Dman isn’t necessarily that here. They should get an in-depth report on him from Tocchet who Soucy played for in VAN. Regardless, I’m throwing every sleeper name I see out there. I’m pretty sure we agree they need an upgrade on the blueline. Ekblad isn’t signing here. The Flyers need to be realistic. One Top 4 guy is essential. Adding two would be better. I don’t like the Flyers D that much after Sanheim and Seeler is good in his role.
