Guys, give it up. Even if Tavares was playing for free, him scoring goals and points but being defensively useless is why this team is losing games 5-4 and will never succeed in the playoffs.
Tavares is Sundin all over again. Not an elite player. Not an MVP. Not a Cup winner. Home town kid who keeps the sheep in their pajamas happy. But he’s not bringing this team a Cup with the way he plays overall.
And that’s the problem with this franchise and you fan boys. You guys worship him like he’s won something for this team and he’s still going strong. He’s not Crosby. He’s done nothing but pad his career stats.

I think it’s as simple as it gets; Shanahan wanted complete control and having Lou in the organization was a threat. If things went poorly, ownership would eventually remove Shanahan and promote Lou. Instead, Shanahan wanted a puppet GM and ownership, as ignorant as they ever have been about hockey, allowed it. Dubas was his pet. Treliving was hired to be the same until Shanahan got fired. And as we can see, Treliving is a glorified assistant GM who is running this team even further into the ground than Shanahan did.
There is a bitterness there, they both started the same year.
Lou became GM of NJ 87-88 (year 1 lol) and it was him who drafted Shanny who started playing the same year lol.

Lou was manager of the year, at least once if not twice with the NYI. If he stayed, the Leafs would have been better and gone further. Can’t say they’d win for sure but a better chances for sure. He wouldn’t have played games with the stupid contracts or allow the country club to control the team.
I’d bring him back today to rebuild this team properly as hockey president.

The correct coach was Quenneville. And the Ducks are soaring.

Quenneville would never survive in Toronto and even he knows that. A: the team would never offer him anything because of how the media and fanbase would react and B: he would never sign it for the same reason.

So tonight the top line on the leafs will likely produce something but look sad. The second line will look decent but be way overworked for who they are, Rielly will still be expected to be a $10 mill d man, and the rest of the meh NHLers/decent AHLers will look like who they are.

I’ll have to do some research but I’d probably target a director of scouting of a successful drafting team or the assistant GM of a successful team. Jim Nill before he went to Dallas for example would have been the best signing for the Leafs instead of the entire Shanahan garbage era.
You’d have to hire someone who can trade all our best assets for 1st round picks and top prospects. Clear all the cap space for the 1% chance you can sign McDavid and tank for the 2028 draft.
