They should be embarrassed, but if there is one thing we know about this team it is that they are not capable of feeling embarrassment.
More often than not, especially in the case of Marner, these players usually care too much, not too little. The pressure of the market forces them to deal with it every single day. It’s not a matter of accountability. It’s a matter of bad coaching (Berube is over rated) and a bad collection of players that don’t suit what he needs to succeed.
They have the wrong guy and the wrong pieces. This team needs to have a new architect (Treliving is useless) and they need to rebuild. But without their 1st round picks, it’s futile.
But this team should be blown apart for the 2028 tank and draft. They have enough valuable assets that they could probably put together a large batch of picks and prospects to make the rebuild a lot shorter than it was last time.
But they can’t half ass it like they did with the Kessel era. They have to truly tear it down and build it back up again. Hopefully, the right way this time.

The Minten trade shouldn’t be as bad as the Rask trade but for future reference, if the Bruins ever want to agree to a trade, just don’t do it. Just like on the ice, when it matters, the Bruins will come out ahead.

They’re at risk at missing the playoffs as they are currently a wild card team and the division is a mix of rising young teams and sleeping giants.
I predicted from before the season they would make the playoffs and lose in the early rounds. Getting rid of guys like Domi, who step up in the playoffs, only decreases your playoff success odds.
If they miss the playoffs entirely, it won’t be because they kept Domi over not keeping him. It’ll be injuries, bad PP, decrease in goaltending numbers and a general weak collection of pieces by a bad GM.
I’d say the idea of signing free agents (especially the ones who have direct ties to current Jays through international play) is a lot less of a fantasy than pulling trades for Skubal and other all-stars.
Spending 100 million extra on pay roll might indeed be the fantasy but the entire run last year was a fantasy so why shouldn’t Rogers indulge their fans with a big investment if they were that close to winning it all? Expecting to win a World Series by running it back with the exact same team, while the Dodgers and other contenders will continue to load up, is the fantasy.
Edwin Diaz and AJ Puk are reasonable suggestions, I just don’t see them as connected or as effective as other options.
Kyle Tucker, because he is the #1 prize and is as great as he is, is going to cost the Jays between 45-60 million a season to sign. He’s a great player. But he’s far away from what the Jays need to improve upon. They already had the #1 offense in the MLB. Signing some reinforcements to protect from regression makes a lot more sense than trying to sign a guy who would be making even more money than Vlad.
Trent Grisham is a gamble, yes and I’d be open to signing any other power hitting left bat out there with this toolbox, but there aren’t that many available. I’d sign Kyle Schwarber but he’s going to cost twice as much and is in the same price zone as Tucker. Do the Jays really need him? It’d be nice but the payroll isn’t unlimited. Some type of cost analysis still needs to be considered.
If maintaining his career high season is the question mark, the Jays coaches have taken literal minor leaguers and made them contributors. Part of that is they caught lightning in a bottle and a bit of luck but if those coaches can stabilize Grisham, you’d be taking a reasonable gamble if his salary comes within a reasonable range.
The Jays could manage with or without Grisham. It’d be a potential upgrade to the ranks. What they definitely need is to retain their core pieces and add an ace lefty and a surefire closer. After that, the rest would be welcomed gravy.
Ok, Berube is making a mistake but Max is still a $3.75M guy on the 4th line.
So you don’t think they should add a top six forward? You want to go into the playoffs with the top six there now? If they do ignore you and add a guy, McMann likely comes down to the third and someone (Roy or Joshua) moves to the 4th.
I like Domi but I just don’t see the fit, especially at that cap hit.
The Leafs don’t have the assets to acquire what they need in the top-six anyway so clearing an average salary is hardly the only thing standing between having a top-six forward and not having one. The Leafs need to go into the playoffs with more guys who play with bite like Domi, not less.
Maccelli, Kampf, Jarnkrok, McMann, are all proven dog shit playoff failures and can go away. But Domi stays. Domi wasn’t a 4th line player in the playoffs last year and won’t be this year either.
