The part you fail to realize is that just because he doesn’t fit with the Leafs anymore doesn’t mean another team can’t or won’t take him. Karlsson had an anchor of a contract. He still got traded.
Rielly has been here too long. The change of scenery will do him well and he still has value to a team trying to make the playoffs like Seattle or Vancouver who will probably lose Hughes sooner rather than later.

Grzelcyk is still a UFA who scored 40 points this year. I don’t know what he’s holding out for but if he wants anything equal to or less than 4.5 AAV for 3 or 4 years (similar to OEL), the Leafs could do it. It would be an overpayment but Grzelcyk doesn’t have many reasons to sign here other than being overpaid and that’s a price the Leafs could afford.
Grzelcyk is usually a 20-25 point guy but did have 40 this past season. Rielly only had 41 last year. So even if Grzelcyk goes back to score 25-30 points, he’s still better value than Rielly while playing the same role of smooth skating, passing, offensive LHD. Grzelcyk also played on most of the Bruins teams that beat the Leafs in the playoffs so he has playoff experience on successful teams. He’s undersized but if the Leafs put him with Carlo or acquire Tyler Myers, they can balance that issue out.
With the average age of the Leafs D, they just need 3 pairings of guys who can share the load. They can’t expect any one pairing to play 25 min a night. They need one PP specialist, whom they already have with OEL and they need basic puck movers who get the puck out of trouble and transition like Grzelcyk. They don’t need Rielly or Karlsson to do that when their defensive game is non-existent.
Rielly should have already been traded to Vancouver as part of the Joshua deal. They could have made that bigger and included Tyler Myers. Joshua and Myers for Rielly would have worked perfectly.
The Leafs also need to make sure they have 3 LHD and 3 RHD. Putting a LHD on the right side will not work as they have tried it and it never ends well.

He was horrible in the playoffs. He has done well for himself, found him on the scrap heap for nothing but he’s got more value in a trade than to the Leafs long term. He only has 1 year left on his deal, on the cheap and 20 goals to his name. He’s always been injured so get value now before he goes down again and really gives you nothing.

Edit: Actually, this might work out fairly well. If he can return to form from a few years ago, he can provide some depth scoring. Seems to me like the Leafs are moving away from being overly top heavy on the scoring side to spreading things out across four lines. He plays a physical game, no? Big boy for sure.
