Rangers Add Quickie/Brassard as Coaches

New York hired two former Rangers to its professional development staff this past week. Jonathan Quick, who retired after the 2025-26 season, was named the director of goaltending development. Derick “Big Game” Brassard. who played for the Blueshirts from 2012 to 2016, joins the team as a player development assistant. Both Quick and Brassard will report directly to Rangers director of player development Tanner Glass. Quick will oversee the organization’s goaltending development alongside New York’s goaltending coach Jeff Malcolm.

Mollie Walker was the first to break the story about Quick. His joining the team’s coaching staff is little surprise, as he was a leader in the locker room and on the ice during his 19-year career, including the last three years spent in New York. Quick amassed 410 victories over 19 seasons, posting a 35-30-6 record, a 2.94 goals-against average and a .899 save percentage as a backup to Igor Shesterkin.He won three Stanley Cup titles, including two with the Los Angeles Kings in the early 2010s, bringing pedigree to the coaching staff. Quick will help try to replace longtime coach Benoit Allaire, the dean of goaltending coaches in the NHL.

Brassard, known for coming up big late in the season and especially in the postseason, skated as the team’s second-line center from 2012-2016. He raised his game during the 2014-14 run to the Stanley Cup Final and ask Pittsburgh if they enjoing facing him in the playoffs. Brassard departed the Blueshirts in the July 2016 trade with Ottawa that brought Mika Zibanejad to Broadway. Having a coach like Brassard who displayed offensive skill during his playing career certainly cannot hurt, as the current staff lacks someone with that ability. Brassard joins Marc Staal as a player development assistant under Glass.

Prospect and skills development have been major issues in New York. If Brassard can provide any wisdom and transfer some of the skills he had in his prime to the forwards, New York will substantially benefit. Quick’s talent between the pipes and ability to transmit that information, hopefully to Dylan Garard and others, should vastly assist the organization.
