The Edmonton Oilers have finally traded Andrew Mangiapane. He is being sent to the Chicago Blackhawks. This is the second deal the Oilers have made with Chicago ahead of the NHL trade deadline. They added defenseman Connor Murphy on Monday.
Edmonton tried unsuccessfully to trade Mangiapane earlier in the season. It took adding a first-round pick in 2027 to unload his contract. The deal with the Blackhawks is for forwards Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach. The condition on the first-round pick is that it will be Top 12-protected. To make the deal work within the Oilers’ salary cap, the Blackhawks will be retaining 50% of Dickinson’s salary.
Some Edmonton fans won’t be happy with the team giving away a first-round pick to move Mangiapane. It’s a steep price to pay, but the contract had to be moved. Otherwise, the Oilers would not have been able to make any additional roster changes.
Oilers Newest Players
Dickinson, who was originally drafted 29th overall by the Dallas Stars in 2013, later had a brief stint with the Vancouver Canucks. He got traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in October 2022. In Chicago, he developed into a steady and reliable defense-first forward known for his prowess in the faceoff circle. He’s a dependable penalty killer and doesn’t shy away from physical play. Dickinson registered a career-high 22 goals in 2023-24 and signed a two-year extension worth $4.25 million AAV. However, due to injury, his production has since dipped.
Dach is a 23-year-old centre, drafted 62nd overall in 2021. He’s a big kid at 6’4, 218 Lbs. The left-shot forward from St. Albert, Alberta, spent time developing in the WHL and AHL before turning pro in 2023. Known for his size, physicality (189 hits this season), and two-way play, Dach will fit perfectly into a bottom-six role. In 78 career NHL games, he has registered five goals and 11 assists for 16 points. He’s averaging around 11–12 minutes per game this season. His ability to contribute hits and his defensive play could bode well for the Oilers in the playoffs.
