Blackhawks: Söderblom Shines in Utah Shutout

The Chicago Blackhawks delivered their most complete performance in recent memory Sunday night, snapping a frustrating three-game losing streak with a dominant 4-0 victory over the Utah Mammoth. The win improves the team’s record to 1-2-0 on their current four-game road trip. Goaltender Arvid Söderblom was flawless in securing his first career NHL shutout, while Teuvo Teräväinen powered the offense with two crucial special-teams goals. It was a disciplined, structured effort that the team has been searching for, putting an end to a stretch where they had lost nine of their last ten games.

Game Summary

First Period

The game began as a tight-checking affair, with both teams focused on defensive structure. The Blackhawks, however, carried the majority of the play, outshooting the Mammoth 13-8 in the frame. Their persistence paid off in the final minute. On their third power-play opportunity of the period, Teuvo Teräväinen scored his 11th goal of the season on a snap shot. The goal, assisted by Tyler Bertuzzi, came at 19:05 and gave Chicago a crucial 1-0 lead.

Second Period

The Blackhawks blew the game open with two quick goals from their depth forwards. At 11:38, veteran Nick Foligno forced a turnover and scored an unassisted backhander for his 3rd goal of the season and the 250th of his career. Just 1 minute and 29 seconds later, at 13:07, the fourth line contributed as Landon Slaggert scored his 3rd goal of the season, assisted by Oliver Moore and Artyom Levshunov, stunning the home crowd and extending the lead to 3-0.

Third Period

Chicago sealed the victory early in the final frame with another special-teams goal. While killing a penalty, Teuvo Teräväinen scored his second goal of the night and 12th of the season, a wrist shot assisted by Alex Vlasic and Connor Murphy. From there, the Blackhawks’ defense completely locked down the game. They allowed only four shots in the period and finished with a 28-22 advantage in total shots on goal. The team’s primary focus in the final minutes was protecting their goaltender, and they successfully preserved Arvid Söderblom’s first career shutout.

Notes of the Game

  • The night belonged to goaltender Arvid Söderblom, who stopped all 22 shots he faced to earn his first career NHL shutout in his 104th game. It was the fifth shutout of the season for the Blackhawks as a team, but the first for the Swedish netminder. “It’s been a long time coming… but to finally get it done felt great,” Söderblom said.
  • Teuvo Teräväinen was the offensive catalyst. He scored two goals, his first multi-goal game of the season, and finished with a team-high 4 shots on goal.
  • The four-goal outburst was a welcome sight for the struggling Blackhawks. It marked only the second time in their last ten games (a stretch where they went 2-8-0 before this win, for a 2-8-0 record in their last 10) that the team has scored four or more goals.
  • The special teams were a decisive factor. The power play is getting hot, having now scored in three straight games and in four of the last five. The penalty kill was dominant, going a perfect 2-for-2 on the night and has now allowed only one goal on its last 12 times short-handed.
  • The win was a huge relief for the team’s depth forwards. Nick Foligno’s goal was his milestone 250th in the NHL, and Landon Slaggert’s goal broke a 14-game drought.
  • Coach Jeff Blashill was thrilled for his goaltender. “The life of backup goalies, sometimes you get some tough games, and we’ve kind of hung him out to dry a few times,” Blashill said. “Guys were eager on the bench to try to get that done for him.”
  • The game marked a significant milestone for forward Frank Nazar, who appeared in his 100th career NHL game.
  • Defenseman Alex Vlasic was a standout performer on the blue line. “It didn’t feel like we gave them any chances,” Vlasic said. “It felt like we played a really solid team game and everybody contributed.”

My Observations

It was a great game for the team, driven by the contribution of the whole roster and executed with excellent structure, detail, and awareness from everyone. This is a huge boost for the team’s morale after a difficult ten-game stretch.

However, there are valid concerns about how the young core players are being managed. While winning is important, the Blackhawks are a rebuilding team focused on player evaluation. To have a 4-0 lead at the start of the third period and not use that as an opportunity to give more ice time to prospects like Moore, Korchinski, Levshunov, and Slaggert is a questionable decision. If these players are going to be on the roster, they need to play, especially in situations where the game is well in hand.

Finally, with the trade deadline just five days away, GM Kyle Davidson has decisions to make. The futures of players like Mikheyev, Murphy, Dickinson, and Foligno will be a major storyline to watch in the coming days.

Next Game

The Blackhawks will conclude their four-game road trip on Tuesday night in Winnipeg when they face the Jets. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM CDT. The teams have split their season series so far with a record of 1-1-0. Following the trip, the Blackhawks will return home to host the Vancouver Canucks on Friday night.

It’ll be interesting to see how the tweeks to the defense will continue. I know there was talk about working on a system during the break that complimented their PK.

Glad to see Soda get the shut out, it’s going to get really interesting now that Murphy has been traded
