So far, I’m impressed with the job that Chayka and Sundin have done. It’s a complete culture change. Out with the smaller, weaker players, in with size and durability. The Leafs now have a future, where 2 months ago, they looked dead on arrival. Amazing how a ping pong ball can change the future of a franchise. The Leafs were looking at giving up the 6th overall draft pick to Boston and their team was in the toilet. It looked like a 10 year rebuild on the horizon. Today, their forward group is strong. The defense needs work, but the defense is better than the end of the 2026 season and their goaltending looks stronger, as well. The farm team did the impossible and became Calder Cup Champions and the Leafs got the 1st overall pick. I think McKenna should change his number to 12.

Stenberg has to be around 5’9″, in the pictures of the top 3 picks beside Mckenna he looks a bit shorter and Mckenna is listed as 5’11 like Stenberg.
I cant find it now but Stenberg was standing beside another prospect who was measured at the combine and was 5’11, and stenberg was not measured. he was clearly and inch or 2 shorter.just an observation. Stenberg is def stalkier than most for a 5’9ish
Nylander is 200lbs, he’s not that small. Not defensive, agreed, but not tiny, that’s Marner who is only 180 but is defensive lol
As for what I said I was only saying that you just want to sell out this #1 pick as a career passer. That’s it, all I meant, so fuck off.
And Nylander plays like he’s 150 lbs. So again, if McKenna is stapled to the 3rd line because of defensive issues, the same would apply to Nylander who has been in the league 10 years and still can’t play defense yet gets top line minutes and PP time.
McKenna is another Nylander. That’s just what is and what he will be if he’s as good as he’s been touted. Apparently he’s very accountable for his deficiencies and is aware of them. But at the end of the day, what the player does on the ice is what counts and what matters and despite being told to be more engaged and be more aware defensively, he still has issues doing it.
The goal should be to pair up McKenna with Matthews because their style of play compliment each other well. Matthews needs passes and McKenna’s biggest strength is his offensive vision and his passing. That’s what he was drafted for. And if your desire is for McKenna to “learn defense” well the best guy on the team to do that will be Matthews. McKenna will likely run out of gas after about 40-50 games, most rookies do, which is when Knies can take his spot on the top line. He generally also starts off very shit so don’t expect much for the first 15-20 games either.
What I “wanted” was Stenberg. Now that they have McKenna, they have to put him in situations that make him the most useful. The Leafs would be wise to only play their top line 18 min a game. And yes, that includes Matthews as he gets hurt every year playing 21 minutes a game. Reduce their wear and tear, play them in the O-Zone and on the PP. Let the bottom-six, which the Leafs spent A LOT of money on, in defensive and PK situations. Between more shutdown players and Bob, reducing the goals against is the biggest priority. I still think the Leafs D is shit and old but at least using players in the correct situations will give them a fighting chance to stay in a wild card fight.
So you don’t give a shit about McKenna, np, gotchya. Put him into a non defensive role against the primary defensive pairings and lines of the opposition to keep Captain Matthews happy.
So my guess is you don’t believe McKenna can become an all around guy decently so just start using his skill right away to keep the primary star happy. Fair enough. Cheers.

Keeping Matthews at maximum value is the only path forward for the Leafs. Either he wants to leave when he becomes a UFA or he is the #1 weapon in winning. You have no option unless you blow up the team today and rebuild now which this retard GM elected not to do. If he has to blow it up later, at least Matthews will be at the highest possible value.

If McKenna’s career is ruined, it will be because he’s small, physically weak, disengaged and defensively inept, not because he played on the 1st line beside Matthews as a rookie. The absolute worst place for McKenna to be is on a 3rd line, playing with muckers, trying to shutdown top lines. If that’s the path they want for McKenna, then return him to the NCAA and just let him develop there.
But we all know that the only hope the Leafs have of keeping Matthews is giving him a playmaker on his wing and that’s exactly why they prayed as they drafted McKenna. This is their desperate attempt to keep this core happy and together while Matthews will be desperate to rebuild his value as he walks himself towards UFA status and wants to maximize his next contract value.
