Bennett gets away with shooting Ekholms stick away. Of course.
It’s hard not to wonder what impact Corey Perry might have had on the Leafs had Dubas/Shanahan signed him all those years ago instead of Wayne Simmods. He is a p.o.s. too like Bennett and Marchand….but you need those players to win.
Our management has made so many errors in this era. ????
They’ve had nine years to mix and match this core. The combinations don’t matter – these players simply do not elevate. It’s a personality and character thing, not a talent and chemistry thing.
It may not matter if we “change the DNA” around our core players because our core players simply do not elevate their game the way they do on Florida and Edmonton.
How many shifts do you think Maurice matches 3C Lindell on McJesus? I’m betting ZERO. It’ll be all Barkov. Just remember that Maurice did match Lindell against Matthews and he was able to shut his ass down.
When your stars cannot dominate another team’s 3rd line, you’re simply not winning.

LeBrun reported that Rielly is not waiving his no trade. These guys like LeBrun just don’t say stuff for $hits and giggles. They do have reputations.

Tree is part of that. Yes he only had a few weeks to make a tough decision on the core. But he ultimately walked the team to where they are now. No one has ever had the stones to make a tough decision in this era. Now? Best of luck to Tree and the management. They’re going to need it. I’m not super optimistic Tree can make chicken salad out of this. He got completely schooled at the deadline. Look at what Florida did, and what he did. His record does not give me a ton of be-leaf.

The question is who on that list changes the “DNA” of the group AND makes us better. Because Tree needs to do both. I don’t envy him.
Brad wants to “change the DNA”. That is word salad that means nothing.
They weren’t that close. This isn’t a “mindset” thing. The group of players is not good enough in big moments.
Marner is walking out the door with no return on the asset.
Leafs are in a tough spot to try to get better. Not a great pool of free agents and few assets to deal.

The series was not as close as it seemed. Bobrovsky was hot trash in games 1 and 2. If he’s average even, those games are split.
Pelley said in the press release “It was determined that a new voice was required to take the team to the next level in the years ahead.”
That suggests they are going to hire a new hockey president rather than have Tree report directly to Pelley.
My guess is Pelley already has his guy. Wonder who it is?
