It’s not letting me quote you, Dots…. Oh for sure, a place with proper software and format is really appreciated but you add a blogger with a multi layered background with a good hockey mind and can write you’ve found the penthouse.
Where’s Chunk, Dots?
Still really slow in this forum. I was hoping it’d be a couple pages per day like HB still was even a few weeks ago.
These things take time, Assman. A new forum and this is the absolute slowest time for NHL chatter and message board participation.. Things start to get fun this weekend though with Hawk prospects at the Kurvers tournament. Can’t wait. ……… But, IMO it’s all about the blogger and man, Frenchy seems to be the goods. These kind of excellent hockey minds get found and attract people.

Glad to see you here. totem. Not sure if you saw Frenchy mention his background but IIRC he mentioned he was involved in jrs for awhile cutting up video. With you here posting about what you see at WHL games and if paul makes it over we’ll get OHL thoughts too. ….. That’s some decent coverage of Major Junior.
Hey Bill, awesome to see the site has a business plan and is attracting sponsors. Your name and decades of great work should attract sponsors, writers and a solid following.. I know HHH will be my home base. ……… As a Hawks fan I feel really blessed to have a Meltzer like writer in Coach Frenchy. At a perfect time too as Davidson draft picks start to trickle in and that should be a yearly thing for a good handful of yrs.
Yrs of content and Frenchy seems well equipped to make sense of it all.

Oh, this is nice… But they have Kaiser listed as a projected 5.4 mil cap hit!! Hope that’s not what he’s holding out for……. Kid has 98 NHL games on some downright dog teams and he’s -4 in plus-minus. And the minus 4 was earned 3 yrs ago in just 9 games played as a rookie. He was even the last 2 yrs in 89 games.
Nice work here, Frenchy…….. This guy was money and to realize he had a lifetime .922 SPG with the goalie equipment those days is crazy. And indeed, in an era where goalies would come out near the bottom of the circle to cut down angles and play an athletic style (there was no blocking style and saves were made thru athleticism) this guy might have been the first “technical” goalie ever.

Forget everything I posted above. A kid will now be able to play AHL in his draft +2 yr, not his draft +1 yr. The rule is made for guys like KK who were not good enough for the NHL his draft +2 yr but too good for jrs.

Anyone read about the new CBA rule starting this season where teams will be allotted one spot in the AHL for a 19-year-old? Assuming the Hawks choices are essentially Vanacker or Spellacy if they decide to move one or the other up to AHL as they’re the only prospects that have signed their ELC that’d be worthy of the spot. Thoughts?
If it’s me, I’d move Spellacy up to AHL. Not sure how much more he’ll learn in the OHL and his ceiling/floor are a lot lower than Vanacker. I’d keep Vanacker in Brantford so he can get a full season of being the man with Lardis and O’Brien moving on and so he gets in a healthy season to gain confidence prior to moving up to AHL. He’s destined to be a crowd favorite when he hits the show but for now, let’s develop him properly.
18 year olds are still screwed or if they turn 19 during the season it’s ok?
A kid is drafted at 18 and after that he can only have 2 yrs of jrs eligibility left. So, no matter your exact age the very next yr after being drafted you’re considered 19 even if you still haven’t turned 19 to start the season and the following yr you’re considered 20.
So, just go by that and not exactly how old they are Any kid drafted, no matter his age at the time, will be eligible the very next season for the AHL under the new CBA.
Damn this thing, didn’t post my reply again…… Thanks for posting the Kurvers tourney info, BM. Next up is to get the Hawks’ roster and then we get some hockey. IIRC Frondell won’t be there cuz he’s home playing SHL but I’d assume all the rest of the pertinent 2024 and 2025 draft classes will be there.. …. Being rooted in jrs I’m guessing Frenchy will report on this tournament a good bit.

As we all know KD and Crew’s own draft picks are arriving in the Bigs and the roster is saying he thinks it’s time to throw quite a few kids into the deep end of the pool (camp will tell us more). One of the best things about KD IMO is he ain’t worried a bit about allowing players to develop at their own pace from jrs on up. He’s not throwing in a KK to see if he can “survive” an NHL season before he’s ready. Kids up when management thinks a kid is ready not where a kid “should” be in his development. The proper older school way..

Just wrote a 3-4 paragraph response that didn’t take…. In a nutshell love your work, Frenchy. Read everything you wrote here since I found you and will do so everyday. No fluff, no bs or lazy hot takes. Your work will spark reasoned mature debate thru the next part of the rebuild. Really good work here.
But Frenchy, who are you? You’ve obviously seen decades of Hawk’s games and write professionally so I must have missed you? … Maybe you can take a 1/4 of your next post to give us a Frenchy profile?
