Further to my lament, why can’t the Leafs get the best and brightest scouts to find those diamonds in the rough? They make more profit than any other NHL team, so they can afford to have the best scouting staff in the NHL. It doesn’t count against the Cap, just like coaches. Teams like Florida, Tampa, LA, plus others always seem to out-draft the Leafs. This shouldn’t be happening. When will this become a real priority, instead of lip service?

I dont see that they outdraft the leafs, I guess if you only really look at the Leafs then they look poor because the hit rates are not great, but thats every team.

If you compare TB and the Leafs since 2018, the Leafs have a much much better record at drafting.

if you look at Florida, really only 1 player stands out drafted since 2018, Lundell .. also Devon Levi and spencer knight. but they have done a lot

The Kings for sure have drafted well, but they havent been good most of that time and havent won anything..the results are not there yet

Tkachuk has barely scored — and didn’t against us — and the team had no problem potting goals against our team, because we lost all the matchups or at best, came out evens, so our entire offense was nullified when the top 2 lines were shutdown.

true, the top lines were able to at least play evens, I think at 5v5 AM line may come out slightly ahead. but not enough to make up for the bottom getting crushed

I think Marner wants to see what UFA is like, really dont think he wants to come back now

Full admission that I know I’m guilty of this sometimes but I like to think/hope I only do this when I’m replying to a comment or replies that have been posted in the nature that you are talking about. The last reply I posted I had typed out and edited 3 times to try and avoid dragging the thread into a silly argument and more a discussion but I’m not sure if I’ll have success on that front or not.

So in short – sorry if it was me who has made you feel that way, the last thing I think the vast majority of the folks here want is to see this place take on what so many hate about that other place.

The Leafs were 29th at 5v5 expected goals last year; that’s lottery team level right there.

They won the division because they had excellent goaltending and a much better defensive group.

Matthews doesn’t need Marner to exceed at this point in his career. I would say Marner needs Matthews far more than the other way around.

Marner plays slow, was incapable of getting in on the forecheck, so any winger capable of doing that is going to suit Berube’s systems.

With Marner gone, they can build out a balanced team, it’s really that simple.

Now they are going all in with Berube, so they have to get players to fit his style. soft Mitch hasnt worked. and paying 14 mil wont fix it

its not just minus marner. you replace him with 8mil and 5 mil players.

who are better playoff warriors. dont care about the reg season. They have to go through good teams no matter what. They had home ice, didnt help. just get better..in the playoffs

Marner finished 5th in the league in scoring, and 7th in Selke voting.

I get that we all need to come up with ways to cope with his impending departure, but FFS, this team will be weaker next year without him.

losing Marner and inserting someone else makes them a little weaker depending who it is, sure. they may go from a 105 point team to 102. But really who cares, or from 110 > 105 or whatever
But the reg season doesnt matter. getting a player/players who makes them better in the playoffs does.

so maybe weaker one part of the season, but they need to focus on whatever it takes to win in the playoffs

I guess it depends on what you’re looking at and how you’re looking at it. Marner both drives play and kills penalties. Bennett doesn’t kill penalties, but he did have a much higher Created xGoals – so he’s in the right places, doing the right things. I feel that if you could mix him in with Tavares and Nylander, you’ve made your second line a very dangerous line. With a healthy Matthews, it would be a resurgence, even with Marner gone – but Domi could offer a shadow of what Marner brought. You could seek out an Ehlers or a Boeser, but I’d much rather be targeting Marchand and other guys to recreate the bottom-6 with more compete and more defensive acumen to help improve the PK as a whole.

The area I’d see improvement is that you can improve the areas you can’t today due to dollar allocation which affects a larger percentage of the overall game (ie, Marner is on the ice for 33% of the game, but the other 67% does suffer as a result of the lack of rounded talent out there).

How many points do the Leafs have in 2025-26 if..
-they dont re-sign marner and dont replace him
-replace him with Bennett
-replace with player of your choice (name them)

This is going to be interesting to watch.

The guy is 37 years old, and hasn’t played since 2022-23 – and didn’t put up great numbers (although he was battling multiple ailments).

I think this is a classic case of hoping you get the guy from 10 years ago – and you will end up terribly disappointed.

most likely. my expectations would be a 3rd line C. 30-40 points. but decent D
