There’s a very big difference between being “qualified” to be a coach on a terrible team and being qualified to coach a successful team. Which coach showed up with zero experience and just won a Cup with a lottery team? A lot of coaches are former players who skip the process but that ends up creating bad coaches with Gretzky as the most obvious examples and Patrick Roy as an example of a guy who could coach in junior but falling flat in the NHL.
Very few coaches fall into that category of just showing up in the NHL and being amazing Cup winning coaches. The majority work their way up the ranks and experience is clearly more valuable than praying a random rookie coach does an elite job with no prior pro experience.
Paul Maurice spent 7 years in the OHL before he got a chance in the NHL. Spent another 20+ years (13 years missing the playoffs) before he won Cups in Florida.
Mike Sullivan spent 7 years coaching in the AHL before he won two Cups back-to-back with Pittsburgh.
Jon Cooper was GM/Head Coach in the NAHL for five years, AHL head coach for 3 years then became head coach of the Lightning.
Rod the Bod is the best coach in the NHL right now and he was an assistant for 7 years before he was a head coach. And then it took him another 8 years to win a Cup.
Werenka, was a stupid hire to be an assistant coach on the bench with his three years at the University of Calgary as experience. He’s literally never coached pro hockey, ever. Going from USports to the NHL is a jump. How is that any improvement over Mike Van Ryn? Or Lalonde who has two Cups as an assistant and coached the only part of the Leafs that was actually successful, their top 10 ranked PK. You can still hire Werenka as an analytics coach and use him like a video coach but to be behind the bench with plenty of other qualified, experienced, winners available is just retarded.
Can you imagine what Bedard and Celebrini are going to command? Over $20M per season on a 4 year deal. They’re now mercenaries who’ll go where the money is. This also means that low tax states have a hugely distinct advantage over the Canadian and Blu States. Now look at Knies, signed long term, only 23 and no trade protection. When a team has more than one of these type of players, making north of $20M on a shorter term contract, it’s going to put them in Cap hell and they’ll come calling on the Leafs and Knies. You can score a franchise changing player, even up for the lower contract of Knies. The other scenario is keeping Knies on the cheap contract, moving a Matthews and add a Superstar, $20M player for that rebuild.
You really gotta stop using this term mercenaries for players as if this started two weeks ago. Players have been going to the highest bidder since free agency was invented. It’s not new, it’s just how the market works.
Matthews and Nylander @ 50% retain would give the Leafs the biggest boatload of rebuild assets ever seen in Leafs history. If they shit themselves in the first half of this year, trade everybody starting in January and reap the rewards.

I am fully aware you were talking about Steve Sullivan. But the only reason he is taking the Marlies job is because he lost his NHL job, not because his first choice was the Marlies. That’s called a demotion everywhere except in retard land. The Leafs already gave him a job with limited experience and then demoted him. It wasn’t his choice to go to the Marlies because he simply took what he could get which was a demotion.
If the Leafs were putting their financial advantage to good use, they would be grossly overpaying David Carle to be the Marlies coach. Pay that guy 5 million a year to coach in the AHL if you have to and just wait to promote him. That’s the top prospect in coaching and the Leafs should be bringing him into the fold with their financial might, at any cost.

Unpossible, experience is worthless to the Leafs. They just hire and promote unqualified guys all the time.
If coaching experience meant anything to the Leafs they’d have kept Lalonde (and his two Cups) and his PK that actually was the only aspect of the Leafs that didn’t suck ass last year instead of hiring a guy with zero pro experience because he’s an analytics asshole.

Love Marner or hate him, there is one constant that needs to be addressed. His salary Cap hit. The Leafs were having Cap problems before he left. Something similar is about to fall on the heads of the Anaheim Ducks.
Incorrect. The Leafs could have easily fit Marner last year but they decided to waste money on pylons like Maccelli, Joshua, Roy, Laughton, Jarnkrok, Carlo and Rielly. The Leafs “cap space” problem is self-inflicted. When the “cap crunch” happens, it should cost you your worst players, not your best. Look at Florida and Vegas. Somehow, they find a way to cut the fat without losing their best pieces. It’s called good management which is something the Leafs haven’t had in 59 years.

Would it have made a difference if Marner was a Center? Probably. Wingers shouldn’t be considered the most important position on the team. Hence, they should be paid less than a Center. Unfortunately for Marner, he wanted Matthews money and it wasn’t going to happen.
Strike three, wrong again. Marner played center for Vegas when the team was hit with injuries. The only reason Marner wasn’t developed as a center is because the Leafs were too stupid to develop him as one. Hunter literally said after they drafted him he viewed him as a center. The Leafs, being the retards that they are, did not. Again, that’s not on Marner, that’s on the Leafs. Did Matthews lead the playoffs in scoring and go to the Cup Final last year? Oh, he didn’t? But he gets “Matthews” money, right? Right. Marner was worth it and the Leafs were too retarded to see it.
The Leafs couldn’t find a way to pay three, in their prime forwards max money. So he had to go.
Wrong again. The Leafs could have afforded to keep Matthews, Marner and Nylander but even in a world where they couldn’t, Nylander should have been traded if they absolutely had to pick only two of the three. He would have got a lot more in return than Nic Roy, that’s for damn sure. If the theory is true that losing Marner wasn’t the reason the Leafs finished last in the division, they would have still drafted McKenna and had they paid Marner “Matthews money” and traded Nylander, it would have yielded a better final outcome. McKenna | Matthews | Marner + whatever you got in return for Nylander (top-six forward + top-four D) is what the Leafs should be looking at right now. Instead, they’ll be lucky if they’re a wild card team.
In reality, Rielly was the one that needed (and still needs) to go and the Leafs still can’t make it happen, meanwhile Nurse went to the Sharks with 0 dollars retained by the Oilers and they got a top prospect to boot. The Leafs are retarded. Those are the facts. End of story.
