Participantsolid points, Leafs should draft the player who has scored 100 points in the NHL
Marner is long gone, time to move on from the cry fest. its the pros. shit happens
You brought up Marner trying to compare him to McKenna, not my fault the facts slapped you in the face.
It’s the pros but the Leafs are run by amateurs and the retards (you) loved their decisions. Here they are, last in the division.

Participantone of these players is a small winger the Leafs dont need, the other is a winger they just traded but needed
Height: 6′0″
Weight: 180 lbHeight: 6′0″
Weight: 170 lb*I dont know or care who the Leafs would or should pick with whatever pick they end up with or without*
One of those players is a proven Selke candidate and the other doesn’t play defense. One of those players is a proven 100 point player who elevated Matthews to 60-69 goals multiple times and now that he’s gone, Matthews is down to 26 goals for 13.25 AAV. One of those players makes you look like a retard for wanting him gone.

ParticipantAgain, even if the Leafs got McKenna, what problem does that solve for the Leafs? Even if McKenna scored 30 goals above replacement and was on the ice for ZERO goals against, they’d still be one of the worst defensive teams in the NHL and probably not a Cup contender anyway. McKenna is a very good offensive player but his profile just screams Taylor Hall 2.0. Not a terrible player to have but not good enough that the entire team can be saved or built around him.
Ivar Stenberg is interesting, a smallish winger who has never played in North America but he’s putting up numbers in the SHL that’s never been done before for his age other than the Sedins. He has a high hockey IQ, skates well, scores points but his size is always a question mark as the NHL has less time and space than in Sweden and some huge defenders will use their size and reach to box him out. Might be a very good player but not a franchise changer overnight either.
Keaton Verhoeff is much more in the profile of exactly what the Leafs need. 6’4″, 215 lbs (still only 17) RHD who can score goals, points, skates very well and high hockey IQ. If he becomes a two-way force that plays in all situations and big minutes, that’s the type of player that could turn the Leafs around if he maximizes his potential.
If the Leafs ended up with McKenna or Stenberg with the 1st overall pick because he’s “the best player available”, I would still trade Nylander. McKenna plays the same style and you could get a boatload for Nylander. At least two if not three pieces in terms of draft picks, elite prospects and a young roster player. That would give the Leafs more young assets as well as save cap space if you wanted to grossly overpay Matthews to not leave this sinking ship. Then again, when he’s scoring 26 goals for 13.25 AAV, you may as well trade his ass too and just use McKenna as the new centerpiece even though he’s not a center or a very good two-way player.
The next problem is, if the Leafs win the draft lottery this year, they can’t tank again until 2029 because the 2027 and the 2028 drafts would be useless to the Leafs as Boston would get the 2027 pick and the Flyers get the 2028 pick. They’re just fucked.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantI just ran the simulator and the Leafs won ….
I wonder if they would pick McKenna with the 1st over all pick.
Another small, one-way winger?
That’s the sad part is even if the Leafs miracle a 1st overall pick, McKenna is so far away from what this team needs and doesn’t fix the problems they have.
They’ll win all the drunken bar fights after the game though.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantLeafs 5 points from Bottom 5, this is good. gotta get there now, no turning back
The odds of the Leafs winning the lottery might be higher than their odds of finishing in the bottom 5. It’s not enough that the Leafs lose, the teams below the Leafs, who also want to lose, have to win.
Boston is going to be very happy with the attempt. The Leafs will find a way to Leaf it up.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantCan Matthews get himself a PP goal here. like now.
With the Master Steve Sullivan PP scheme, PP goals are guaranteed.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantLeafs got 7 shots in 30 minutes of play.
It’s going to be really sad when Boston is drafting 6th overall after this nosedive after the Olympics.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantDamn it, Leafs give up the first goal of the game..
and the 2nd of the game ..
Pretty easy for that to happen when you get outshot 3 to 1.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantNick Suzuki was what Montreal got for Pacioretty from Vegas. That’s another example of the benefit of selling the previous generation to create the next one. And Matthews + Nylander would be worth WAY more than what Pacioretty was after he had 17 goals in 64 games.
Cole Caufield 15th overall pick. Demidov 5th overall pick. Slafkovsky 1st overall pick (not that good but still part of their group). Reinbacher 5th overall.
Lane Hutson 2nd round pick. Kapanen 2nd round pick.
Leafs need to learn from this and rebuild.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantCalgary has six 1st round picks, eight 2nd round picks and four 3rd round picks in the next 3 drafts. That’s a solid start to a rebuild. That’s what the Leafs could and should be doing. And they could easily do it if they trade Matthews and Nylander at the 2027 draft which would lead to the rest of the pieces wanting out of town too, including Rielly and Tavares.
Leafs currently have two 1st round picks, three 2nd round picks and three 3rd round picks in the next 3 drafts. Matthews and Nylander could bring in, at least, four more 1st round picks (or elite prospects). Trading the rest of the pieces like McCabe, Carlo, OEL, Tavares and Stolarz could also bring in three more 1st round picks and two more 2nd round picks.
That would put the Leafs in a situation where they would have nine 1st round picks, five 2nd round picks with the 2028 and the 2029 1st round picks primed for lottery picks.
With the correct director of amateur scouting (Mike Futa should be considered), that’s a 3 year full rebuild, adding to Knies, Cowan, Robertson and Danford all under 25 plus the chance to give McDavid the max contract in 2029.
Knies | McDavid (if available) or (Lottery Pick) | 1st round pick or (elite prospect)
Robertson | 1st round pick or (elite prospect) | Cowan (or 1st round pick)1st round pick | Lottery Pick
1st round pick | DanfordWoll | 1st round pick (or 2nd round pick)

ParticipantWhy is a guy who admitted he doesn’t have a plan considering dealing Matthew Knies??
MLSE is as low end as it gets.
Because his boss, Pelley, is also an idiot who doesn’t know how to run a hockey team and refuses to hire somebody who does.
MLSE won’t change until the fans force them to. I know Montreal Canadiens fans who own Leafs season tickets. Why? Because they have a successful business and know how stupid the average Leafs fan client is. They give them tickets, they close deals and MLSE charges through the roof for absolutely everything knowing that business expense accounts will be paying for everything.
Until the on-ice result is the sole reason for ridiculous profits, the incentive structure for MLSE to change does not exist.

ParticipantWould Barry Trotz consider not retiring and joining the Leafs ….
Then see if Torts would want to coach …..Trotz retired to spend more time with his family but he was a failure as an executive. Excellent coach but not made to be a team builder.
Torts wouldn’t work here either. He demands way too much accountability from his players and this core is blameless. That would end the same way it did with Babcock.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantWord out there among insiders is that Tree was shopping Knies on Friday, possibly to Montreal.
Tree is the same guy who said on Friday that they don’t have a plan yet moving forward.
Enough of the indecisiveness.
Pump the goddam brakes and fire Tree NOW.
They need a new president and GM, NOW.
Won’t happen until Pelley is fired. The same Pelley who has no qualifications to run the Leafs other than being a media executive so all he knows how to do is spin media.
Knies was also requested by Carolina for Rantanen when Marner said no and Treliving, at the time, said he was untouchable.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantNone of that will work. Too many holes, too few assets.
I agree, however, if Pelley tells Treliving to go full steam ahead on this team, it could very easily get much worse, very quickly in terms of long term cap commitment. We’ve seen with the Tanev signing or the Carlo trade, Treliving has no problem destroying the future for short term gain especially when the guy above him gives him the green light and there is zero accountability for failure as was evident this year.
The Leafs have about 25 million in cap space. The UFA market is horrid. It’s filled with former stars who are too old to really make a difference (Ovechkin, Malkin, Carlson etc.) and potential contract anchors looking to hit the career year pay day.
Assuming the Leafs fire Berube and hire DeBoer then splash every penny they have left on UFAs, they could try to convince Matthews and the dumbest of Leafs fans that they can “re-tool on the fly”. It won’t actually work but it would be great for headlines and sell hopeium.
If they can’t get rid of Rielly (they probably won’t) or anybody else but they swing at every UFA they can and splash that 25 million on players like Raddysh or Andersson, Coyle or Schmaltz and Tuch or Schwartz. Throw in another “home town kid” story like Laughton or Boone Jenner and then the team could look like this…
Knies | Matthews | Tuch or Schwartz (@8.25 AAV)
Cowan | Tavares | Nylander
Joshua | Coyle or Schmaltz (@6.25 AAV) | Domi
Lorentz | Jenner or Laughton (@2.25 AAV) | RobertsonOEL | Tanev
McCabe | Raddysh or Andersson (@8.25 AAV)
Rielly | CarloWoll | Stolarz
Coach: DeBoer
That’s a pretty mediocre team (wild card potential but not a contender or a Cup winner) but that’s what Pelley and Treliving would try to sell as a best case scenario on a UFA re-tool if they hit every UFA home run they can hit. And that really is the best case in terms of price and the only “quality” players out there. That’s how weak the UFA market is for 2026. Odds are though, those guys don’t want to join this dumpster fire of a franchise as the ship is sinking. Trades will be limited considering how few picks and prospects the Leafs have.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantMy bet is on them keeping Tree because Leafs.
Yup, unless Pelley is fired.
I’d also bet on DeBoer, the ultimate runner up head coach is hired.
