Rogers Communications Inc. says it has signed a deal to buy the remaining 25 per cent stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment it does not already own from Kilmer Sports Inc. for $4.35 billion.
Rogers now owns the entire thing with plans to sell off minority stakes to investors. They already had a majority so it’s pretty unlikely anything will drastically change other than the fact that Rogers has poured another 4.35 billion dollars into this investment and any other dissenting opinions are now fully eliminated. Larry Tanenbaum might be the last face the average fan can identify as an owner of the Leafs and that’s probably a bad thing.

A 2nd round pick is not a bad price but 4.775 AAV is a waste of money for 10 goals and 25 points. It also means his QO for next year will be over 5 million. If he has a shit season, you either qualify him to a gross overpayment or you lose him for nothing. The Leafs could potentially get a better player for a lower cap hit for a 2nd round pick and nearly 5 million in cap space in the UFA market. Hayton isn’t that good. The Leafs entire bottom-six is filled with guys who score 10 or less goals getting paid double what they’re worth. The only benefit would be that Hayton is at least young but overall, he’s been a bust for a top 5 pick that of course Chayka made the mistake of drafting that high.
Personally, I don’t like the Giroux fit. I think we could still use someone younger, faster and tougher. If they can move out 2 guys, I would try Tolvanen, if it was under 4m
The Leafs are hellbent on being the oldest, slowest team in the NHL for the next two years until Matthews decides he’s moving on.
Giroux is great at FOs and can pass the puck so he’s an option on the PP2 and on the top line RW for periods of time.
He’s probably better off in Philadelphia though. They could pay him more and he could end his career where it started.

Last season Benoit played 73 games, he is also gone. Carlo was a pilon. thats a decent differenceRaddysh pushing Rielly down the d depth is good. and he might still be traded.

Rielly, OEL, Tanev, McCabe, Stetcher…yes, 5 of the 6 on the depth chart right now are literally all the same guys are back again. Defensively, the Leafs are just as weak as they were last year as of right now. They’re all a year older and just as likely to get hurt as they ever were.
Carlo was a pylon defensively in Toronto (but wasn’t in Boston, funny how that goes) and Raddysh is 30+, and known to not be very fast or a very good defender either. He’s had ONE good offensive season in the NHL playing with a multiple time Art Ross winner in front of him and a current Vezina winner behind him. Not a surprise Tampa Bay sent him to the Leafs like an anchor (much like Nick Paul) and replaced him with a cheaper and equally effective option in John Carlson. Playing without Vasilevskiy behind him and hard minutes might not go as well as they do in your blue and white dreams especially if they get the Bob of last year at 38-41.
Myers played and Benoit played because Tanev was hurt which is what Tanev has been most of his career so it’s expected to happen again and again until he’s got his own home on Robidas Island next to Muzzin Manor. Tanev is as vulnerable as ever and older than ever. He’s one hit away from Myers or some other pylon being thrown back into the line-up. And guess what, Myers, Rifai and Mermis are all still under contract so they’re likely back again at some point again. Andrae is tiny and not signed yet and Villeneuve is also unsigned. Neither seem to have a spot in the line-up because Rielly is still here and neither would be that big of an improvement either.
The D is not very different and Rielly isn’t going anywhere. Chayka gave up on it because he thinks Rielly is worth an asset and nobody wants to give anything up for Rielly in the only locations he’s willing to go to, otherwise he’d be gone by now. The majority of the quality players they could have signed are gone now so while subtracting Rielly would be a positive defensively, there’s almost nobody left to spend the cap space on.
So far, I’m impressed with the job that Chayka and Sundin have done. It’s a complete culture change. Out with the smaller, weaker players, in with size and durability. The Leafs now have a future, where 2 months ago, they looked dead on arrival. Amazing how a ping pong ball can change the future of a franchise. The Leafs were looking at giving up the 6th overall draft pick to Boston and their team was in the toilet. It looked like a 10 year rebuild on the horizon. Today, their forward group is strong. The defense needs work, but the defense is better than the end of the 2026 season and their goaltending looks stronger, as well. The farm team did the impossible and became Calder Cup Champions and the Leafs got the 1st overall pick. I think McKenna should change his number to 12.
The D is literally exactly the same except for swapping Carlo for Raddysh. The D won’t really be better until Rielly is gone and isn’t a bunch of injury prone dinosaurs.
Leafs have actually become the 2nd oldest team in the NHL. I think their current average age is 30.64 years old. For a team that complained about injuries last year, they only got older. It’s becoming the late Pat Quinn days where every deal was for a guy on his Toronto pension plan.
