I would Fire Tre/Burube at the end of the Season, let a New GM try and do an on the fly retool for 26-27, see how it goes. There is not point tanking next season.

You’re right, they can’t tank next season but they can still make it clear they plan to rebuild for 2028.
Make zero trades that cost picks or prospects. Only sign UFAs that you plan to trade at the TDL. Start asking for lists of teams from all players for their next destination.
I would actually keep Berube but fire Treliving. If you keep Berube, the pressure shifts to the players rather than blaming the coach (again) for the failures of the team. That pressure helps guarantee the players waive and get traded. If the Leafs fire Berube and hire a DeBoer or Laviolette, there could be a mirage of success where they become a wild card pretender.
Tavares seems to always get slapped by that Long Island karma. Both he, the Leafs and even the Islanders would have been better off if he just stayed put.

The “change” to this core was ruined when they let go of Kadri and Hyman. The core got worse when they extended Rielly to a huge, long term contract. The core was destroyed when they signed Tavares to a ridiculous contract that he never lived up to and forced the price of the rest of the core way up.
If this team had simply kept Kadri and Hyman, traded Rielly instead and never signed Tavares, they would still have Matthews, Marner and Nylander with a much better supporting cast.
The Leafs tanked and drafted high. They drafted a couple guys here and there that were useful. But they did not draft enough of them and traded away a bunch of them along the way.

Looking at that list of Leafs draft picks, they absolutely sucked ass at drafted D. If they had kept their drafted forwards and just used the UFA / trade market for D like signing OEL etc. they would have been much, much better off than what they did by trading forwards, letting good players walk for nothing and blowing their load on Tavares.

Maccelli is small and he sucks but he is an RFA and they will not let him walk. If he keeps getting garbage time goals, he could be close to 20 goals and 40 points. I can’t remember the last 20 goal – 40 point player that was not qualified unless he has a serious attitude problem.

The revenge on Gudas is limited because the Leafs don’t have many goons left but they could call up Blake Smith from the Marlies for the revenge game. That way you have Pezzetta and Smith who can both take turns pounding on Gudas. I’d send at least 3 different guys to fight him. Sign Rosehill to a PTO if you have to.

Really the only way to fix this teamA full tear down and rebuild is the only way to fix this team. One top-five pick won’t do shit but make this mediocre team delay the inevitable.
Matthews can and will walk as a UFA. He won’t be able to win here. He needs to go the Kessel route and so does Nylander. Be a secondary player on a true contender.
The Leafs need a multitude of picks and draft picks to fix this mess. One isn’t enough.
