Good. The leafs had too many top six guys anyways and not enough character. The end. They had to give up the star that didn’t match the new coach and they did. Berube’s game is north/south skating and/or physical play, Marner is neither. Best of luck to him but he no longer fit what the team wants to do.
Another dumbass take. Berube loved Marner. If anybody didn’t fit the mold for Berube, it was Tavares and Nylander, both huge defensive liabilities who suck at back checking and can’t be trusted defensively nor kill penalties. Berube distrusted Marner so much that Marner led the team in playoff ice time among all forwards at 5v5, PK, PP and total ice time.

He could have accepted a trade out of Toronto, anytime during the last two seasons. He wanted to hold the team up for ransom. He isn’t worth anything near Matthews. What awards has Marner won, compared to Matthews? Matthews had multiple 100 point seasons, plus multiple Rockets, and a Hart Trophy. Marner…..nothing! He’s just a teeny, tiny mercenary that’s not worth more than $10M per season. Good riddance to the soap opera and it’s time to seal this thing up and win the East and play for a Cup.
He has more career playoff points than Matthews so this idea he was a playoff choker is idiotic unless you are willing to admit Matthews is a playoff choker and only “worth” 10 million too. He had a GWG and two primary assists on GWGs vs Florida. Anybody blind to those facts are spinning bullshit stories because they’re butthurt he is gone and the team is worse because of it.
Marner did not accept trades because he was loyal to the franchise. He did not want to leave. He wanted to stay and win here. It was the franchise, it’s media and some idiot fans that forced him to leave much like Kadri before him.

I bet there would be a change if the Federal and Provincial governments took away the Entertainment write-off provision. If the Corporate Elites had to actually pay for their tickets, they might just say, “No Thanks!” Maybe then, tickets would become available for less. On one other note, I don’t know why that the Canadian teams and other U.S. markets didn’t fight harder in-regards-to evening up the tax situations that favour the Southern, no income tax states. There needs to be balance. Canadian teams can’t afford Canadian players, due to the taxation issues. American and some European players can have their bonuses paid in their own jurisdiction and save a lot of money. Canadians?
