ParticipantMeh, its a business, marner could have signed at anytime during the year. He chose not to.
Managements mistake was not waiting until the deal with the Canes was 100% confirmed, they jumped the gun.
~FakepartofmeDo you think there was an offer on the table for Marner to sign? If anything, I’d imagine MLSE was waiting to see how the playoffs went before giving him all the money x8 and trade protection.

ParticipantThere are probably some young kids scratching their heads right now.
~Atomic WedgieYoung kids these days are clueless, now get off my damn lawn!

It would also be nice to have a list of threads you’ve posted in somewhere so that you can keep on top of topics without having to dig in to find threads. That other place had a pretty perfect setup, just copy that, lol.

ParticipantBox lacrosse, and it isn’t even close. Honestly, I love it better than hockey, not sure how it hasn’t gotten more traction as a professional sport.

ParticipantI would not have believed Marner would walk for nothing, until recently. It would surprise no one if he decided he was done with the circus and the failure and wanted a new start.
I wouldn’t be disappointed to see them both gone and Rielly. I don’t really care about how good the team is at this point. I am sick of the annual slap in the face to the fans.
~AetherialI think Marner is going to walk too. The universal hate he’s getting has gotta get to a guy. Sure, he loves the idea of playing in Toronto, but this city is done with playoff flops and he is getting the brunt of the hate.
Matthews is 1000% not going anywhere. You don’t extend a guy, give him the C, and then trade him a year later. No doubt, he needs to perform better in the playoffs, but he’ll have many more years to prove himself, (whether deserved or not).
Rielly is untradeable, be prepared to be swearing at the TV for, what, four more years?!?

ParticipantNHL in Toronto, Edmonton, and Vancouver
MLB in Toronto
NBA in Skydome
CFL in Toronto and Edmonton
NLL in ACC, Mississauga, and Maple Leaf Gardens (Kaleb Toth winning the 2000 championship with 1 second left may be my greatest sporting memory)
Toronto Phantoms arena football at the ACC
Oil Kings
Washington Generals vs some other team
Brampton Excelsiors (Ontario Lacrosse Association) in Brampton, Brooklyn, Peterborough
Was at the NHL Awards in Toronto one year, boring AF TBHWHIPPER
ParticipantUntil I hear otherwise, I strongly believe that Matthews is hurt.
~Atomic WedgieThat HAS to be the case. You don’t just fuck off to Germany completely unexplained in the middle of the season. You don’t go from scoring 69 one season to less than half that a year later without something going on. I’m just curious to hear what it is. Offense from him this postseason is pretty much a write off, but he’s playing well otherwise.

ParticipantTampa will trade an 8th rounder and future considerations for Rielly with 50% retained.
~PDFSo far, (and probably no matter how long we wait), this is the best offer.
WHIPPER
ParticipantHow dafuq are you EVER going to trade Rielly?!? He’s overpaid, terrible, has a million more years left and, if that’s not enough, he has trade protection.
I can’t take anyone seriously that suggests trading Rielly.
WHIPPER
ParticipantLeafs have no elite prospects and no 1st round picks.
They simply can’t afford to let their 100 point players walk for nothing with no replacements.
~UGOkay, I’ll bite. What are you comfortable with for his next contract?
WHIPPER
ParticipantThe leafs DO NOT have a 1st round pick until 2028
Wow.
That laughton trade is still horrible.
~FakepartofmeAgreed, on the surface it doesn’t look great. But the Leaf system is VASTLY different than the Philly, errrr, did they even have a system?!? Laughton has never looked comfortable to me. But we got him for one more year, so hopefully a full season will have him ready for a DEEEEEP playoff run in 2026.
WHIPPER
ParticipantFFS, how can you put forth such little effort last night?
~Atomic WedgieIn fairness, we thought the same thing after game 5 against Ottawa. That being said, I don’t think this group has the cahones to bounce back against a much better team, (than Ottawa). This is perhaps the most talented Leaf team we’ve seen in a LOOOOOOOONG time, but pure talent only gets you so far in the playoffs.
WHIPPER
ParticipantIf the leafs lose tomorrow do they even offer Marner a contract? Or just low ball him. No way they’re giving him anything in the ballpark that has been going around.
~bryantI have no doubt the Leafs will try to retain Marner, he’s a heck of a player. But if he’s under any impression he’s getting a raise, then shoot him into the sun. Look at all the players that make more than he currently does, (okay, NOT Matthews). For the most part, they’re playoff studs. I don’t give a flying fuck what accolades you collect during the regular season, you’re paid for what you do in the playoffs.
I suspect after asking him to waive his NMC, he’s a little bitter towards the team. Also, the fans have/will turn on him, so does he really want to play in that environment? He seems like the kind of player that cares mostly about money, so he’ll find a team that’ll pay him $14-15Mx7 and fuck off. No hard feelings. He had a NMC, he had every right to refuse a trade. But good lord it would have been sweet if we landed Rantanen and were able to re-sign him.

ParticipantDream smaller. Like maybe marner gets a point or matthews scores a goal at some point
~FakepartofmeCan I dream that fancy pants Marner doesn’t give the puck directly to Florida leading to a goal?!?
WHIPPER
ParticipantWhy the hell would Bennett leave the panthers for the Leafs?
It makes no sense
Not happening.
~FakepartofmeOh, I know. Let a guy dream, though.
