The Edmonton Oilers have traded defenseman Darnell Nurse to the San Jose Sharks. Shakir Makhamadullin and Zack Sharp are the return. TSN’s Ryan Rishaug reports that the Oilers did not retain any money in the deal.
The deal comes after multiple reports indicated Nurse requested a move out of Edmonton in June. After free agency opened at Noon on Wednesday, there were reports that Nurse expanded his list of teams he’d accept a trade to.
Nurse, 31, had seven goals and 24 points in 82 games last season while averaging 20:58 of ice time. He averaged 23:03 of ice time in six playoff games as the Oilers fell in the first round. He helped the Oilers to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2024 and 2025, recording five goals and 14 points combined during the two playoff runs.
The 6-foot-4, left-shot blueliner is entering the fifth season of an eight-year, $74 million contract that carries an annual cap hit of $9.25 million. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2029-30 campaign.
Oilers Trade Return
Shakir Makhamadullin is a large (6’4, 201 Lbs.) left-shooting defenseman. He registered five goals and seven assists for 12 points in 50 games with the Sharks last season. The 24-year-old was a first-round pick (20th overall) by the New Jersey Devils in 2020.
Zack Sharp, 21, is a 6’2, 194 Lbs. left-shooting defenseman. He was a fourth-round pick (124th overall) in 2025 by the Sharks. He registered five goals and 14 assists for 19 points in 37 games for Western Michigan University in the NCAA.
Ryan Shea Signs in Edmonton
With the salary cap space made available from the Nurse trade, the Oilers were able to go out and sign Ryan Shea. The signing is for five years at $4 million AAV. He registered six goals and 29 assists for 35 points in 80 games last season.
