ParticipantPersonally, I’d try and acquire another first round pick in that 16-20 range, Capitals have two picks there (16 & 18), perhaps you could offer them picks 33 and 41 or a roster player and a pick for one of them? The Canucks need goal scoring and Liam Ruck is pretty good at that. The Canucks need to spend a few years acquiring as much talent as they can and then see what they’ve got.
Scouting Report on Liam…
16. Liam Ruck, RW (Medicine Hat Tigers, WHL)
Medicine Hat lost a lot of offense with the departures of Gavin McKenna and Cayden Lindstrom, among others, but Ruck made up for it. He loves to shoot from anywhere and does an excellent job of getting the puck where it needs to be. He led all draft eligibles with 45 goals, and that’s good for seventh in the country. Ruck is extremely dangerous around the net with a variety of quality shot choices at his disposal. His chemistry with his twin, Markus, was obvious from the get-go. It feels like it’s going to be difficult to select both together without some funky trade magic – that’s the downside of their incredible second-half play.Freakshow
ParticipantIf Stenberg is there they HAVE to take him, he’s clearly the best player available. Malhotra is a talented young kid but the runway in front of him is longer, he came on late offensively but he hasn’t done it over a longer stretch of time. The Canucks would be foolish to pass on Stenberg but if they can move down in the draft slightly and get paid by someone in the 4-5-6 spots as well as getting Malhotra, it’s not the worst case scenario in my opinion.

ParticipantMore like Maximus Dingus Giganticus.
Hahaha…that actually made me LOL. Impressive that you came up with that.

ParticipantSo…remember the good old days on HB when we used to have the bestest conversations about the Canucks, gosh I kinda miss those days. Despite some serious flaws with this format let’s get some conversations going again about the Canucks, a lot is happening on the “left coast” right now. Cheers!!
What was you HB username?
“My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius. Commander of the Armies of the North. General of the Felix Legions. Loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.”

ParticipantI honestly thought nobody was touching the Avs this year.
Me too, they just looked unbeatable during the regular season. But that’s why they play the playoffs games, different animal. Necas had one goal in 13 games, not good enough.

ParticipantMark Stone is the quintessential player that can’t skate very well but he’s such a good, clutch, player.

ParticipantYeah, everything seems to be pointing in that direction. Personally, I have mixed feelings about yet another rookie Coach and GM combo. But at this point I doubt there’s many other options. I can’t see the demand being high to be part of the 32nd place team that’s in no rush to win.
Ownership has a lot to do with who they can and can’t hire, in my opinion. The Sedins, much like Linden, were golden boys in Vancouver, but that didn’t work out so well for Trev, maybe Aquilini has learned. But I doubt it.

ParticipantHB had its day but time to bury it.
Coaching hire oughta be coming soon & the draft is coming up fast.
This format has its issue as well, but at least it’s somewhat better than HB, which is deplorable.
The draft is going to be interesting, on many fronts, I’m not sure at this point if the Canucks stay at #3 or they move up or down???

ParticipantMarner is gonna win a Cup his first year in Vegas, that’s going to be hard for the Leaf faithful to swallow. Man, he’s playing fantastic with a deeper group around him. Amazing what happens when a team has talent, depth across all four lines, good/big/mobile defence and good goaltending.
My wife and I are moving to Muskoka from Arizona shortly, As a Westerner I don’t know how I’m going to handle all the Leaf love in Ontario??? Wish me luck!!!

ParticipantI’m down. As bad as this format is, I can’t even post on Hockeybuzz.
I’m thinking Malhotra will be hired sooner than later, but stranger things have happened, I’m just glad Rutherford is mostly out of the picture, he was the creator of a lot of problems within the organization. Either by opening his mouth too much or by not dealing with internal things in a timely manner. I’m hopeful the Canucks are in a better place now, even though it won’t show it in the standings for a while.

ParticipantYou know, as a late 50’s Western Canadian and an outsider looking in, it’s somewhat fascinating to watch the Leaf organization over the past 40 years. In recent years, the Shanaplan years, they played some good hockey for y’all but they never accomplished anything of note. Just so many poor decisions and a flawed roster resulted. Now you seem to be between a rock and a hard place, do you start over again or do you continue to chase with a flawed roster.

ParticipantAre the Leafs gonna look completely different next season, or more of the same same? Personally I think now is when you trade Matthews before the Oilers trade McDavid, the haul would be an unbelievable kickstart for a re-tool.

ParticipantHypothetically, let’s assume B. Tkachuk and A. Matthews decide they will not extend with their current franchises in a few years. As a Flyers fan, I would be shocked to see them waive to come here. Does the Utah franchise have a better chance then Philly to land them? Probably. On the same level as Vegas, TB, FLA, DAL, CHI, LA, or NYR? Probably not. So I disagree with you it is only cyclical based upon if a franchise is playing competitive hockey. In 5 years, may be my opinion will change.
Players just wanna win, winning solves a lot of issues. Winning starts with drafting well. Typically you have to lose to get good draft position, that’s just how the systems set up. McDavid, Draisaitl, MacKinnon, Barkov, Matthews, Eichel, Heiskanen, Makar, Stutzle, etc. These kids are all top five picks, the Flyers have had one top five pick in the past eight drafts, Cutter Gauthier, who they traded away because he’s a bitch.

Participantthere has been a decade+ of incompetency. That isn’t changing any time soon.
when you waster 1st rd picks on jett and nesbitt doesnt matter how many 1st you have
Wasted picks, LOL, you’re such a drama queen. Seven kids in the entire draft taken after Luchanko have played a game in the NHL. Even if he doesn’t pan out, the draft is not an exact science.

ParticipantI do agree this no longer a destination franchise. Having players waive NMC to come here is going to be unlikely. The few times an elite talent becomes available without a NMC (ie Quinn Hughes), the organization cannot just say “oh well, we got outbid”. Since free agency is not an option and the current regime has no interest in team stripping to get close to top 5 for the next couple of drafts, the only way forward is more Zegras and Jiricek trades. Players who have not lived up to their pre draft hype. That’s why the team has to be willing to move Tippett and/or Foerster this summer. See if they can get Berniers out of SEA. Another organization going no where with a high draft pick who has not lived up to his hype on a long-term contract. Notice he does not have a NMC clause. The regime will need some luck and a HC to maximize the skill of Michkov and Martone. I’m not sure which is more likely- getting the luck needed to win big in Zegras type trades or the current HC who can maximize his players’ performance.
Every franchise goes through the process of being a “non destination franchise”, very few franchises stay competitive for more than a decade or so before they start to decline. As a general rule of thumb. Look at the Coyotes/Mammoth, we sucked in Arizona for how long? 20 years? Until we hired a GM, Bill Armstrong in Sept 2020, who was committed to properly rebuild, with the blessing of ownership, Arizona was a no-go destination. Now we have some good young players and a new owner who’s committed to winning. Right now you’re in the John Chayka phase, eventually you’ll get to the point where Briere is gone and ownership submits to a proper rebuild, although, you’re already set up pretty good with picks for 2026 and 2027 where you have two 1st’s and two 3rd’s.
