The more I look into Chayka’s only run as GM, the worse it looks. If this guy is left unchecked, it could be a total disaster for the Leafs. Similar but worse than Dubas.

Chayka was hired in May of 2016 by the Coyotes at 26.

***2016 draft: Keller 7th overall and Chychrun 16th overall. Technically, he was the GM when they drafted in 2016 but who knows how much input he had on that draft.
2017 draft: Pierre-Olivier Joseph 23rd overall. 225 games, 46 points. He passed on Poehling, Oettinger, Frost, Jokiharju, Tolvanen, Hague and Boqvist. Not a huge bust but a bust.
2018 draft: Barett Hayton 5th overall. 358 games, 65 goals, 155 points. Also drafted Bahl in the 2nd round. He passed on Quinn Hughes, Bouchard, Dobson. Another bust draft.
2019 draft: Victor Soderstrom 11th overall. 61 games, 1 goal, 12 points. Passed on Boldy, Spencer Knight, Caufield, Newhook, Krebs, Harley and McMichael. Huge bust.
-He also drafted Maccelli in the 4th round. He has played 295 games with 51 goals and 169 points. A small victory figuratively and literally.
2020 draft: Did not have a 1st, 2nd or 3rd round pick. Combined games played of all the players drafted: 2.

Absolutely nothing about Chayka gives me any kind of confidence he is what the Leafs need from a drafting perspective. Worse than Dubas in drafting.

His list of trades are here: https://www.nhltradetracker.com/user/trade_list_by_GM/John_Chayka/291/1

    Some notable trades he made:

Acquired Taylor Hall for a 1st round pick, Nick Merkley, Nate Schnarr and a 3rd round pick. Terrible trade. A 35 game rental. 1st round pick became Dawson Mercer. Merkley was a bust but at the time was a former 1st round pick with same value and he blew it on a rental. Typical Leafs behavior.

Acquired Kessel and Birks for Galchenyuk and P.O. Joseph. Not a great trade considering Joseph was their 1st round pick just 2 years prior and Kessel was finished.

Acquired Nick Schmaltz for Dylan Strome and Brendan Perlini. Not a terrible trade but Strome has outperformed Schmaltz overall despite taking a few years to reach that potential. Again, showing more and more examples of his willingness to trade his 1st round picks / top prospects.

Re-acquired Galchenyuk for Max Domi. Bust trade considering Domi scored 28 goals and 77 points immediately and is still in the NHL. Galchenyuk lasted 1 year in Arizona.

Acquired Kruger for Martinook. Not a good trade. Kruger never played a game in Arizona.

Acquired Kuemper for Wedgewood and Rieder. That’s probably a push.

Acquired Richard Panik and Laurent Dauphin for Anthony Duclair and Clendening. That’s a small loss.

    Re-acquired Wedgewood for a 5th round pick.

Acquired Derek Stepan and Antti Raanta for DeAngelo and a 1st round pick (7th overall). Mittelstadt, Rasmussen, Tippett, Vilardi, Necas, Suzuki…very bad pick to trade away.

Re-acquired DeAngelo for a 2nd round pick. It’s pretty strange how many times he brings back a guy he traded not long before.

Again, I don’t mind the advanced stats stuff but it needs results and this guy has very, very bad results. Arizona was so bad, for so long, they had to relocate to Utah. And their current success seems to have almost nothing to do with most of what Chayka did as GM. In fact, he made so many bad picks and trades, one could argue the team would have already been where it is today many years ago if it wasn’t for his destructive run as GM.

Leafs are about to make a very big fuck up with this guy. Hopefully it falls apart and doesn’t happen. This is Stellick x JFJ to the exponent Dubas levels of stupidity.

42 million for Bo for 73 ops+ so far, of course is being defended by you.
Imagine how much more winning the Jays would have with that.

4th in rbi lol. Can you imagine????

It’s too early to write off the Jays but Bo is now the worst player of all time.

Imagine caring about Rogers spending too much money?

This is the gravity that is called The Toronto Maple Leafs.
    players come and go.

That’s not gravity because the best guys are ejected out of orbit. It seems the wrong players go more often than not to the determent of the franchise. A cycle that seems to have repeated itself since Sittler.

Friedman, predicting a combination of Sundin and Chayka to run the Maple Leafs depending on Sundin’s decision.

I can feel some pain coming to Leafs Nation.

Sundin is totally unqualified to be the President. It’s literally a PR move to keep the pajama retard rangers happy. Since he retired, he’s basically been out of hockey which is about 17 years now. Not that he doesn’t understand hockey but his executive experience is literally zero. And his winning resume on the ice is only for Olympic hockey, not for Stanley Cups.

Chayka is a pure numbers guy, which is fine but without a legit great hockey mind around him, spreadsheets won’t win Cups by itself.

The Leafs have near unlimited resources to hire better people. These hires are as lackluster as Pelley himself. It will end poorly.

Hyman has 5 goals in 7 elimination games. Good thing the Leafs got rid of that guy.

Helps him see the ball and keep the bat in the zone a little longer.
Whatever he’s done, keep it going.

Bichette and mets having a rough go. lol

Mets absolutely suck and Bo would still be 3rd on the Jays in hits and 4th in RBI. He would probably have even better numbers in the Jays line-up. Was retarded to let him go regardless of price. A couple of injuries and the Jays couldn’t hit anymore. Having as many quality hitters as possible is how you build a World Series WINNER. You enjoy watching Toronto teams build LOSERS.

    RIP John “Cheech” Garrett

Very sad and sudden. He was a good one.

I agree he doesn’t have the experience for that but look at Keith Jones in Philly.
He went from the broadcast booth to being President of Hockey operations in Philly.

I don’t consider Keith Jones a good point of evidence or a good comparison to Sundin for two major reasons.

Keith Jones has not build a Stanley Cup winner. His team barely made the playoffs. So from the success perspective, not a great comparison.

Then, on the flip side, at least Jones was in media and watched hockey every single day for years. Sundin has been disconnected from hockey for more than a decade until very recently.

I want the best possible people for the job that money can buy because the Leafs have one advantage over most other teams; money. There is no cap on executives. If the Leafs pay each executive 5 million dollars each, I don’t give a fuck and neither should they. If they can’t spend 150 million on players, spend 100 million on players and 50 million on management. Don’t spend the money on shit employees but spend beyond the upper limit on the most qualified people at every single important position.

Anything less than that is a failure which you don’t see fully fail until 12 years later like this last attempt at a rebuild.

I hope the Leafs choose White as their next GM and will Sundin become Prez of hockey ops?

Sundin is unqualified to be the President of Hockey Ops and this team is not serious about winning if he is hired for that role. Sundin would be a marketing and PR hire to keep the pajama boys in the fanbase happy.

When they brought in Shanahan, he knew what a Cup winner looked like from ice level but he had limited executive experience and did not have the required skills to be GM. But they wanted him to be GM. So they hired Lou. Once Lou threatened Shanahan’s place as President, Lou was pushed aside for Dubas, the glorified assistant GM who was there to do whatever Shanahan told him to do. When it was time to take the blame, they fired Dubas instead of Shanahan and hired another puppet assistant GM in Treliving. Rinse, repeat.

When you bring in Sundin, with basically zero experience as an executive and zero experience as a Cup winner, you’re asking for all the same problems all over again.

Sundin doesn’t cut it except to sell hope based on nostalgia. If they feel like they need to have Sundin in the mix for PR reasons, you put him in a position to at least LEARN before you let him take full control of the team.

President of Hockey Ops: Ron Francis

    – Figure head, hockey mind, talks to the media, reports to Pelley, keeps him the fuck away from the team and has a direct connection to Rod Brind’Amour for future recruitment.

VP of Hockey Ops: Chris Pronger

    – Learns the ropes as an executive, brings a great hockey mind to decisions being made, knows what a winner looks like on the ice, doesn’t build a pussy ass team.

Senior Advisor of Hockey Ops: Mats Sundin

    – Learns the ropes of management.

    General Manager: Ross Mahoney

    – Runs day to day operations from contracts to trade talks. Understands hockey from the draft outward which is the most important key to success in this rebuild.

    Director of Analytics: John Chayka

    – Grossly overpay this guy to take the role below GM but give him the chance to be promoted if he succeeds. Runs all the numbers on everything.

    Capologist: Brandon Prindham

    – Keeps the Leafs under the cap, gives him more time to prove he can be promoted.

Assistant GM / GM of the Marlies: Ryan Hardy

    – Continues to run the Marlies with the addition of more prospects for player development. Given the opportunity to be promoted from within in time.

    Director of Scouting: Ryan Bowness

    – Attacks the draft, rebuilds the Leafs farm system, another future candidate for promotion.

    Tanking Head Coach: John Gruden.

    – Tanks the team but allows you to play more Marlies.

    Marlies Head Coach: David Carle

    – Potential future head coach if you can’t get Rod Brind’Amour in the future.

Future Real Head Coach 2029: Rod Brind’Amour.

    – Takes over the team of the future and runs them like a machine.

McDavid is so banged up he might not even play tonight. He didn’t even play 20 min the last game. It’s disappointing to see the best player in the NHL having so much bad luck. It seems some of the “greatest of all time” have all the luck and year after year it seems McDavid would have no luck at all if it weren’t for bad luck.

We’re so use to seeing the best in the game winning the Cup early and often like Crosby did but it seems as though for McDavid he is going down the Ovechkin path where just getting one Cup is an incredibly more difficult challenge than usual because of circumstances outside of his own control. Ovechkin was that guy that always showed up in the playoffs but his team wasn’t up to his level. Same is happening to McDavid in Edmonton, time and time again.

Nice to see I have created an alt to have full on retard conversations with myself on here LMFAO.

That type of idea is reserved for retards such as yourself. As a surprise to absolutely nobody, you do yourself what you accuse others of doing.

Not sure why you keep pushing this fucking moronic narrative, but just to show how dumb it is.

Kapanen has more goals than Hyman and Marner have combined points all of this playoffs.

    It’s fact. It’s damn fact.

It’s always cute when fucking morons try to use the word narrative in an attempt to make themselves look smarter than a box of rocks.

It’s not an entire narrative, just a simple fact that the Leafs wouldn’t be a shit bag team had they not got rid of the majority of the players they gave up on.

the oilers problem is so basic that even i can figure it out. it might not be 100% on the goalies, but it’s been a glaring issue for many years running now.

leafs issue is a little more infuriating and complex. ownership, low standards, corporate mindset, soft players, systems, defense, etc.

i know a guy like hagel is technically too old to bring in on a rebuild, but you also need a mentor who plays the game the right way by example and shows the young rookies how to act. i wish we had him. i’d have the video crew put together a 2-hour long movie of hagel clips and make the youngsters watch it until they memorize it. i swear he’s darcy tucker reborn with better hands. talent, snot, piss, vinegar, and finishing ability. fuck tampax. how the fuck do they keep landing these guys?

speaking of which, did anyone else see that hit on slafkovsky last night? i swear if you watch it in slow motion, you can see his soul leave the body.

i swear i am going to quit watching oiler games. it’s a fucking war crime to watch mcdavid get pissed away like this. him and drai should GTFO of town.

oilers losing out to the fucking ducks is gonna blow my bracket to kingdom come.

The Leafs had their chance with Hagel when he was with Chicago. It would have cost Knies. Shanahan said no. It seems stupid but Knies could end up providing more as he matures.

Tampa Bay is clinging to contender status and with the way Hagel is replacing Point (who sucks now) in terms of big game status, there is no way the Lightning are letting him go especially at that discount cap hit.

The Leafs should only be interested in guys 23 and younger. Everyone else must go.

Travesty of officiating to end the Edmonton game. Referees didn’t see or signal a goal but call a goal. Then review can’t overturn it. It was probably a goal but just the way they handled that was terribly bush league.

Hard to count out McDavid but they’re down 3-1. If Edmonton crashes out, they need to fix the goaltending. They didn’t lose because of the goaltending tonight but they didn’t win because of it either. They gave up way too many goals in the first three games and were forced to throw in Jarry cold tonight. He did alright but this Oiler team needs above average goaltending to compensate for the leaky D. They might go after Bob but he’s old and he had a horrible season. Very tough situation to fix quickly unless they have an unknown rookie in their system who can come out of nowhere on the cheap.
