ParticipantThe main issue was overpaying the 3 players.
Willie should have been signed for 5.5 – 6. Marner 8 max and matthews 9 max.
Had dubas not caved, the leafs would have had more money to build a better team.
Also thinking marner and matthews were going to lead thus team anywhere was also a mistep.
They really needed a real number 1 D as well. That was impossible the day they gave Tavares 11 AAV. The Leafs absolutely fucked themselves. Bad drafting, bad trades and bad UFA contracts destroyed whatever chance they had to have a Cup winner led by Matthews, Marner and Nylander. Being in a division with contenders such as Boston, Tampa Bay and Florida made the Leafs window of opportunity small and their margin for error razor thin. Management didn’t do what was required to make the difference.

ParticipantAnything can happen UG. There maybe GM out there willing to pay that price.
The 1st over all pick does have some value to it in my opnion which is good as yours is….Anything that stupid happening usually happens with the Leafs being the idiots that overpay. That’s not an opinion, that’s a fact proven by history.
The 1st overall pick has as much value as the best player available in that draft. McKenna is not that valuable because he is not McDavid. If your opinion is that some team is going to grossly overpay for it, your opinion is uninformed and will be proven incorrect.

Participantthe timing of it all was just a disaster for the Leafs, just as they had to pay Mitch, Willie and AM the cap died. Yes other teams function in the same cap, but they didnt have 3 young stars all getting big raises at the same time.
extra cap space would allow them to keep Hyman. the 2021-2023 teams were good, having Hyman would help and whoever else they could add.it would compound because they had to spend draft capital to try and fill in the need for those players instead.
its amazing how Fast Tre tanked the team. he sucks
Or…don’t sign Tavares to the 2nd highest paying contract in the NHL and create a scenario where your young star players (who all have potential to be better) are all going to want more than that on their next deal.
Whether the cap went flat or went up, every single one of those young guys were going to demand more because of what they gave Tavares.
Also, if the Leafs actually knew how to draft players outside of the lottery picks, they might have had cheap depth on ELC. Instead, they draft pylons like Robertson who to this day have not stepped up into a meaningful role. The Leafs drafting on the blueline was even worse. Years of inept scouting did far more damage to this team than not being able to spend more money.
High player salaries is always the cop-out for Leafs fans and the franchise. Everybody seems to think you can just spend more money on UFAs and that’s what wins a Cup. Sorry folks but that only works in the MLB, not in the NHL. It didn’t work in 1998. It didn’t work in 2008. It won’t work in 2028. The Leafs need to spend 100 million on scouting and player development before they spend it on UFA salaries.

Participantimo the biggest factor to the Leafs not being able to get shit over the finish line is the cap only going up 3 million from 2019-2023
They loaded up on 4 players and the cap went stagnant and they couldnt fill in the gaps enough with cheaper players. Also never moving away from Rielly as the #1 or finding a true #1
fine player but never a true #1The cap going flat is a horseshit excuse. It was the same for everybody and plenty of other teams that were maxed out on cap space still found ways to make deals happen. The Leafs didn’t. They just kept throwing futures away for old, broken players and wondering why it never worked. The Leafs drafting gave them dogshit for depth up the pipeline. Even if the cap went up, Tavares still would have been an overpayment and total ass in the playoffs.
The Leafs had too many of the same type of players and too much money invested in them. The cap going up wouldn’t have changed that.

ParticipantWell, it was a good run boys. Drafting Nylander, Marner and Matthews in consecutive years landed nine straight years of playoff hockey, you just couldn’t find the right mix with all that money tied up in four players. I look forward to Matthews coming home this summer (USA) and to see what your new rebuild looks like going forward.
The biggest reasons the Leafs failed with that core is because they let Hyman walk, they traded Kadri for nothing, they signed Tavares for too much money (when they didn’t need another player that did what they already had) and because they signed Rielly to a huge extension. The smaller reasons was constantly trading 1st round picks and prospects for broken down, old, over-rated players at the deadline and getting nothing out of them when it mattered most at the cost of selling off the farm.
They would have been fine had they not destroyed the team by signing Tavares. At the time, it seemed like a giant victory but he was the 2nd highest paid player in the NHL and provided nothing in the playoffs. He was never an MVP. Never won any kind of award. He was a giant waste of money. His contract forced the Leafs to pay their younger core players even more on their next extensions which further destroyed the cap situation.
If Leafs management had realized they already had 3 offensive minded core players and saved the money they wasted on Tavares for the blueline and goaltending, the odds are strongly in their favor that they would have had more playoff success. Tavares was a net negative on the team. He was horrendous defensively and offensively disappeared in the playoffs more so than any other Leafs core player.
The only other signing that was a destructive as Tavares was the Rielly extension. He fell off a cliff offensively and his defense has always been horrid. That 18-19 million dollars could have been spent on 3 or 4 solid depth players be it 2nd liners, defensive D-men or an upgrade in goaltending and it would have made this team much more competitive in the playoffs.

Participantwho the Leafs going to take with the #1 pick?
If a team wants McKenna, they will need to ponie up in a trade for the pick
say to the Rangers has pick #5 as an example for 2 x first (2026 & 2027 top 10 protected) + a 2026 2nd rnd pick (Canes pick) + maybe unsigned prospectThat’s what I would be looking at. You’s still be able to draft a top RD
McKenna isn’t that valuable. He ain’t that guy. Nobody is going to “ponie” up that much to get him. He’s not Celebrini, McDavid, MacKinnon, Crosby etc.
It’s also why, even if the 8% chance miracle comes through and the Leafs are drafting 1st, McKenna doesn’t change this team enough to undo the disaster it has become.
Matthews just said recently he can’t predict his future in Toronto. Nylander has no interest in a rebuild. That’s the two most valuable pieces they have hinting their time might be up in Toronto.
It’s time to rebuild.

Participant58.2% chance Boston gets 6th or 7th.

ParticipantSo injuries only come into play when it’s Mitchy-poo’s team?
Not the Leafs, not the Blue Jays.
Fuck all the way off you retard.
Vegas #1 in injuries. #27 in team SV%. It was worse until only very recently despite being the 2nd best team in the NHL on shot suppression. Still lead the division.
Leafs #11 in injuries. #18 in team SV% while giving up the most shots against. Lottery team.
Big23IQ Retard Ranger actively wrong again.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantDoubling down on showing everyone that you are not only the king retard but also unable to accept being proven wrong is a bold strategy little man.
It’s cute you think I’m someone I’m not.
Your such an easily manipulated beta bitch cuksertative retard.
Doubling down on being a Big23IQ Retard Ranger who has created dozens of accounts in a pathetic attempt to make everybody forget how retarded he truly is.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantThat’s your go to when you are proven wrong – calling people a retard.
Brilliant, so telling.
It’s like you are looking into a mirror screaming at yourself.
lol
Because calling you Big23IQ Retard Ranger is all you deserve given your severe retardation.
Unholy_Goalie
Participantinjuries and bad goaltending…was an excuse someone just used..I just read it
Someone is too retarded to see that Vegas had more injuries and worse goaltending and still had a better record.
You should learn to read.
Unholy_Goalie
Participantleading a shit division, congrats to them. the entire west has 3 teams with 100 points, the leafs division alone has 4
Bullshit excuse. The Leafs dropped dozens of games to horrible teams, non-playoff teams and Western teams, including Vegas TWICE.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantLast game of the season for them Leafs.
I hope they go out with a thud. It’s an AHL game.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantLeafs should be looking hard at an unknown coach who hasn’t coached one minute in the NHL – this is just another hot take from king of the retards, the unhinged, incel beta boy retard cuckservative.
Fuck you’re an idiot UG.
Another retard take from king of the retards.
Do the math moron, since you claim to like facts. 4.3M for 70 points and leadership, a guy who has scored in games 5-7 and closed out a series vs a small soft winger who folds when playoff pressure comes who makes 12+M for 70 points.
3 letters you clearly don’t understand are ROI you fucking retard.
And the belief that the Leafs lack of success this year is largely due to Marner’s absence is simply asinine but par for the course for a retard like you.
Big23IQ Retard Ranger.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantVegas traded for Marner and went from 110 points to 93
pretty pretty goodLeafs dropped from 108 to 78.
Vegas was #1 in injuries and pretty much dead last in goaltending up until very recently. But still lead their division.
Fucking retard.
