ParticipantGoing into the last half of an essential six game stretch against conference rivals. They won two of the first three. If they can do the same in the last three, it will be very encouraging. They need to keep making shots. Wednesday, they got one more D goal, Foerster stayed hot with the game winner and Couturier and Michkov got goals. Definitely need something from Zegras-Dvorak-Tippett today. They’re due. If you’re going to get your goals by committee, all the committee members need to chip in regularly. Islanders aren’t a super strong home team.

ParticipantKind of smoke and mirrors win for the Fly-Boys, along with some stellar goaltending. For a team that is really, really, void of any high-end talent they are managing “ok” this season. The Panthers dominated possession and scoring opportunities early on, but strong goaltending from Vladar and opportunistic scoring late in the third period allowed the Flyers to take the two points.
Most NHL games come down to making shots and getting bounces. All the systems stuff from both teams does is cancel each other out. When the Flyers make a shot or get a bounce, they win most nights. On Thanksgiving Day, only three teams in the conference have a better win pct than the Flyers.

ParticipantThe Flyers have gotten two points of a possible four in a tough six game stretch. The schedule doesn’t really ease up until mid-December. It’s hold the fort time.

ParticipantThe second goal, they really broke down. They were playing a banged up team but let one line beat them, kinda like Dallas. A bad slide on the 2nd goal from Andrae along with Drysdale’s desperate dive. I do not like the slide. If it misses, and often does, your guy is wide open and it’s an easy play at the net. Didn’t matter, the Flyers didn’t score. They didn’t get many shots and I would say they were all pretty easy for Vasilevskiy. A lot of breadbasket stuff he could control. Need better shots there. I saw a few passes when the shot was there, three or four. It’s time, place, score. You’re down well into the game and getting stuffed. When you get a shot, take it. The perfect plays don’t happen when the other team is D-ing up like TB did. Konecny was a guy I saw pass in a shoot situation, Cates too. Tippett hit a post, that was the closest they got to a goal.
FlyerFrank
ParticipantAfter a 2-4-2 start, TB has gone 10-2. They’re still winning even with Hedman and McDonough on IR. They have a very good, deep team and will be a challenge. The Flyers have been scoring more the last couple games with the goals spread out among a few guys who needed them. That’s generally a nice sign. Second of six games against tougher conference rivals. They have 2 points so far and could probably do well adding another 5-6 in the remaining 5 games.
FlyerFrank
ParticipantThe playoffs are all in the flyers hands. They control their own destiny. Anything less than that would be a disappointment at this stage.
Why not? 97 points is the magic number. They need 72 more points to get there and have 62 games to get them. That’s not an insurmountable task.

ParticipantFlyers got goals from each of their top 3 lines. Foerster is really heating up after an injury and dry spell. Couturier sprung both Michkov and Brink on nice goals. Drysdale is actually pushing guys around. Zamula-Seeler were both +5. Zegras, Dvorak and Vladar, the off season acquisitions, are all having career years. A solid, convincing win. On Nov 23, the Flyers have the 3rd best win percentage in the conference.

ParticipantThe Flyers got their 3 goals vs STL from sources that had been dry lately. A good sign. NJ has 1 goal in its’ last 2 games. This is the start of a very important 6 game stretch for the Flyers playing conference rivals either ahead or directly behind them in the standings: NJ twice, NYI, PGH, TB and FLA. On Nov 22, the Flyers have a better win pct than every team in the conference except CAR, NJ and NYI.

Participantit does matter, the goal or any points accumulated was not done by the 4th line.
The goal was absolutely scored by a 4th liner, Abols. It was his first of the year. How many of the Top 9 forwards had zero goals going into last night’s game?
FlyerFrank
Participantabols was on a diff line when he scored. not the 4th.
Doesn’t matter. Abols made the shot. He got 4th line minutes last night.
FlyerFrank
ParticipantThe Flyers got some goal production from spots where they needed it. A 4th liner (1st as a group), a Dman (5th as a group) and Foerster (1st in 7 games) put pucks in the net. They need more of that. On Nov 21, they have the 5th best win pct in the conference.

ParticipantFriday was a nightmarish game for the goalies.
It was a nightmarish game for anyone who watched. I was afraid to blink or I’d miss something great or horrifying. Hopefully, the 10 goals given up in the last two games is an aberration. Vladar starts so the odds are better there. Tocchet needs to find some scoring combinations for guys who are playing with anybody not named Zegras. Zegras’ consistency has been a surprise so far. He hasn’t been held scoreless in more than one game in a row yet. The 4th line and the Dmen remain standouts in lack of goal production.

ParticipantFor stretches of the first period in particular, the Flyers couldn’t get out of their own zone even once they gained possession. Breakout attempt? There was a turnover. Rim the puck around the wall? It was either too soft and got intercepted or too hard and became an icing.
Dallas really knows how to D up and applies lots of pressure. More than the Flyers certainly. They’re a much better and much deeper team. Duchene, Benn and Harley were out and they still looked great. The Flyers got an on-ice view of what an elite team looks like. We’ll see if they can get anything out of it.
FlyerFrank
ParticipantThey can’t make as many sloppy turnovers as they did last night in consecutive games . . . I think. You never know with this team so I’ll just watch and see what happens. I laugh when I see all these gambling site ads during games. I can’t predict who’s going to win the next faceoff. Bottom line: 4th best win pct in the conference. Who saw that coming? Gotta make those games in hand count.

ParticipantErsson has been just as bad this year as he was last year so limiting shots against will be their only hope. Vlader is holding this team together with duct tape. If Vlader reverts to his career average the Flyers will be in position to draft a potential franchise player. As it is they are only 2 points from being last in the division.
Not understanding the love and support Ersson keeps getting. At some point, you just have to admit he’s too inconsistent to be a reliable NHL goalie. Maybe serviceable as a protected 2. Regardless of who the 1 and 2 goalies are, there’s going to be a rotation and it has to be managed. Vladar seems on pace for about 50 starts which is a good bit higher than he’s gotten in the past but not wildly high for a No. 1. I don’t see any reason to think he’ll sag under that workload. Flyers are roughly as close to the top of the conference as the bottom. I think the team D results they’re getting are sustainable and the goal scoring has upside. They’ve left 3-4 points on the table a sounder and maybe luckier team would have grabbed. I keep telling you guys it’s not that the Flyers are a perfect machine, it’s that you’re overestimating the rest of the conference.
