ParticipantNo, he clearly wasn’t as he had more career playoff points than everybody on the team, including Tavares who is 7 years older.
I dont know who he meant with that. AM has to look in the Mirror as well, but its going to be interesting to see how this plays out.
i wouldnt say good riddance, more like it was time to try a different approach. in the NHL the playoffs are a very different game and you cant play soft dipsy doodling hockey like Mitch does. it works a bit but good teams squish you like bug in the important games
Must be why Marner was involved in winning 3 games against Florida. Funny because Kucherov, McDavid and Matthews each had 1 or less goal vs. Florida. But Marner’s the one who can’t play well in the playoffs though…

ParticipantI read the Leafs may have a hand shake deal in place with Roslovic. The Leafs would like to move a body or two before bring him in to the team.
Don’t forget they have Robertson as well to deal with.Isn’t he terrible defensively? I’m not as worried about the offense from our forward group, we need at least some defensive forwards. Matthews and Knies are fine, but JT, Nylander, Robertson, MM, Domi, Robertson, etc. are pretty terrible. People (myself included) kinda want to move on from Kampf and Jarny, but if you replace them with purely offensive forwards, this team is in for a world of hurt.
Leafs will absolutely suck defensively in the playoffs with more additions like Roslovic. Berube is the polar opposite coach for that garbage. The Leafs are completely retarded in how they build teams.

ParticipantNo chance that happens.
Kadri and Andersson are huge pieces of value to their team. They would expect a way bigger return.
Also, no chance Rielly is waiving to go to Calgary. Vancouver or Seattle, maybe. Not Calgary.
Why Not? I think it’s just as close as Seattle is. You know something, you are forgetting about Tessa. Does she really what to live
in those two cities? I think Calgary is just as appealing as the other two you mentioned.I would need a hell of a Leafs offer to pry those two out of Calgary.
I know my offer above is crap.No chance that happens.

I know my offer above is crap.Calgary isn’t even remotely close to Vancouver compared to Seattle. Seattle is like a 2-3 hour drive. Calgary is more than 10 hours.
Kadri is their #1 option at center. He’s not getting traded unless they tank the season and move him at the deadline. But he won’t get traded now unless they decide they’ve already given up on the season in July. Considering they missed the playoffs on a tiebreaker, it’s not happening.
Andersson is a very coveted RHD. If they can’t sign him, he’s getting traded for a boatload at the deadline too.

ParticipantNo one argues that Marner isn’t an exceptional hockey player. He’s a two-time first team all-star. He’s 5th in franchise scoring and 3rd in P/G (1.13) behind only Gilmour (1.15) and Matthews (1.16).
No, there are definitely some that do.
Marner was overpaid on his first contract extension and was insistent on, again, being overpaid on his next. You can claim it’s wrong or incorrect, but his peers took significantly less than he did. We can also claim that he’s compensating for taxes – but again, $61m of his $65.5m was paid out in signing bonus money that can be deferred or redirected somewhat.
That’s exactly what he’s compensating for and he couldn’t get big signing bonuses like Matthews and Tavares did to avoid the taxes. Nobody seems to give a fuck about that reality.
Did he still get dinged in taxes more than someone in Dallas or Florida? Yeah, he did. But so it goes.
Yes, he did. That’s not just some ho hum situation. It’s a difference of literally tens of millions of dollars.
But while this is speculation I think that Mitch was never truly happy in Matthews’ shadow.
Indeed, pure speculation. Speculation was also that Babcock got fired because he refused to play them together and that they were very close. Speculation is mostly bullshit because it can be created by any media, especially the one that owns the team and needs to weave PR webs of bullshit so idiots believe lies.
There were comments by his father or his agent which were direct shots at Matthews and either subtly, or not so much, throwing shade on the team’s franchise player.
Prove it, let’s see this evidence. And actual, real proof that he truly attacked or insulted Matthews, not some bullshit Twitter spat or a line taken out of context that’s twisted and interpreted to fit a narrative.
He said he was already done 2 years ago.
Again, prove it. If he was “done” why not take a trade out of town years earlier? Because it’s bullshit.
If you make $11m and don’t accept the criticism that comes with your failures, you are the problem.
He faced the media after every loss and accepted the criticism. He wasn’t the problem. The problem is that management can’t identify the actual garbage players on this team and keeps bringing them back while scapegoating Marner disproportionately.
For all that Matthews has not excelled in games 5-7 either, he was worn that mantle of failure and accepted it –
He accepted that he keeps being given excuses? He accepted it the same way everybody else did. He stood there with a stupid face and shrugged his shoulders.
he doesn’t get bombastic with the media or run away or check out and want to leave.
Another bullshit claim.
He does get to hold the excuse that he was playing injured all season – and any of us who watched it could see it clear as day from game 1 against Montreal throughout the season that he wasn’t right.
So he holds zero accountability? He was injured but still played for Team USA. He couldn’t sit that out? He couldn’t sit out after that tournament ended to give the Leafs more deadline cap space and heal for the playoffs? The pattern here is simple. Hate Marner, excuse everyone else. Tavares played like shit vs. Florida but who cares? Nylander has dry hair? Who cares. Matthews can’t show up for big games? Who cares. But if Marner does any of those things? Circle the wagons.
That said, if he doesn’t manage to stay healthy enough to step up and lead by example, this will a wasted rebuild.
This has already been a wasted rebuild. This team will implode in the next 2 years with Matthews being traded or walking as a UFA. This team is finished. The only reason to delay that blow up is they don’t have 1st round picks until 2028.
I’ve said before that the team will miss Marner – and they will – but you’re bitching about something Shanahan fucked them on over a year ago. Like it or not, Mitch was on the way out and he knew it – and he told the Leafs about it, apparently. At this point they need to balance the roster with a better mix of toughness to support the skilled guys. If the team itself is harder to play against they probably don’t miss Mitch’s contributions as much. I’m not saying they’ve done this for the record. I’m not a gigantic fan of their offseason moves so far – or lack thereof – but they are putting themselves in a position where they can.
This isn’t only Shanahan’s fault. The management team after Shanahan is just as retarded. Treliving ruined Calgary, he’s about to do the same here. This is his MO. He’s a bad GM who was hired as a puppet assistant to Shanahan, the same way that Dubas was a glorified assistant under Shanahan. These are bad managers, ALL OF THEM, and the results speak for themselves. The team is worse and won’t get better when or where it matters. Florida will destroy them for the foreseeable future.

ParticipantGuy, he bounced on his own accord. He didn’t want to play here. Boo hoo. Move on. Christ.
Incorrect. Moron fans pushed him as the scapegoat, management walked him out the door and the media, who owns the team, ran narrative cover for it. He did not leave because he preferred to leave. If he wanted to leave earlier, he would have left a long, long time before it got to July 1st. Even on the way out, he facilitated a trade. He could have given them the finger, signed a 4 year deal and been a UFA at 32 all over again. He didn’t do that. The narrative of him “not wanting to play here” is the equivalent of Leafs fans bullshitting themselves into saying “you can’t fire me because I quit” as a massive cope to losing an elite two-way player for basically a dick on a stick.
You’re not happy unless you’re losing.
This statement makes zero sense because this is the biggest loss the Leafs have had since maybe Sittler. You still waiting for Rich Costello to pan out? Did Peter Ihnacak bring the Cup home? That’s a giant L. And you’re the one that’s happy about it, not me. Seems like you’re one of the many that loves it when the Leafs lose which is exactly what they’ll continue to do as they pave paradise and put up a parking lot.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantYou miss the point about cap hit. If Leafs had paid $14M for Marner, there was no place for improvement elsewhere.
Your claim: Leafs saved cap space by letting go of a two-way 100 point, team leader in career playoff scoring in his prime so they could spend it on better players and/or better areas.
Reality: Vinni Lettieri. Bo Groulx. Travis Boyd. Dakota Mermis. Michael Pezzetta. Steven Lorentz. Nicolas Roy. Matias Maccelli.
They trying to win the Stanley Cup or the Calder Cup?
Unfortunately you and many others miss the point about the cap space. Cap space is irrelevant if there isn’t anybody as good or better to spend it on. Columbus and San Jose has cap space. They can’t do shit with it and they still suck. The Leafs struck out on basically every single major UFA. They signed nobody significant. They got two bullshit wingers in trades. They got a winger who sucks at FOs, has size but doesn’t use it. They got a Finnish Kerfoot who scored 8 goals last year. That’s it. That was their BIG UFA UPGRADE CAP SPACE SPENDING EXTRAVAGANZA.
There was no Bennett. There was no Marchand. There was no Ekblad. There was no Boeser (he sucked balls anyway). There wasn’t a single player added who can bring the Leafs back to Game 7 vs. the Panthers, much less beat them. Nobody. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Zip.
9 years of this kind of participation is enough to make a move.
So Rielly gets a free pass? Tavares free pass? Nylander free pass? Matthews free pass? Funny because Marner has more career playoff points than all of them, including Tavares despite being 7 years younger than him. Wasn’t Tavares supposed to be the guy who got the Leafs over the hump? But instead he sucked in the playoffs, destroyed the cap and they still brought him back? We need 4 more years of that because he’ll play old, shitty defense and disappear against Florida for half the price? Is that how the Cup is won now? Have worse players who lose you games at lower cap hits?
Marner was the only one of the young core that didn’t have a contract….hence, he was expendable.
Incorrect again. Expendable means garbage players who you can afford to lose because they can be replaced or improved upon. As I already proved to you earlier, they did not replace or improve jack shit. All the Leafs quantifiably worst players are all still on the team. Kampf is still here. So is Jarnkrok. So is a lot of other garbage. There has been no actual improvement. This is a prime example of retarded asset management. Nylander gets the Leafs the biggest return. Tavares is the biggest addition by subtraction. Rielly is the next biggest. Marner had more success vs. the Panthers than all of them, but he’s the one that you deem expendable? That’s just retarded.
They could have let old ass Tavares and his defensive liabilities take a hike after he sucked balls vs. Florida after 7 years of overpayment and underdelivering. Zero accountability on that front. Rielly could have been traded to create more cap space too. Nylander could have been traded although the Leafs could still have managed to keep both him and Marner had they removed other, far less useful, less valuable players. I think they kept Johnny Pajamas just to try and win the PR battle and no surprise, a lot of the sheep fans are buying it.
Letting Marner leave wasn’t about who was expendable. It was about management being so incompetent they took the path of least resistance rather than doing what actually needed to be done to improve the team. Knies got paid but he won’t be as good as he could be without Marner. Same goes for Matthews. Same goes for the PP. Same goes for the PK. Same goes for the entire team. The Leafs got worse but they’re winning the PR battle so can keep selling hopeium and copeium instead of an actual chance to win a Cup.
Their only 0.01% chance of a prayer is McDavid and if he knows what’s good for him, he’ll go to Vegas too before coming to this shit show franchise.

Then get rid of Reaves/Kampf
No chance that happens.

ParticipantThe leafs already have those two named Kampf and Jarnkrok, problem is they don’t score.
The leafs need 40P guys for the bottom end and 4-5 PK forwards, not 6-7.
Yes, whoever has the most average / below average players wins the Cup.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantThat pussy assed Marner doesn’t need to be around.
Matthews without Marner since 2020-21
25GP, 20G, 18A, 1.58PPG, +7
It was Matthews who was the star buddy, it’s Marner whose points will dive down, not the other way around. He still got 100P this year because he had Knies on his line and JT and Nylander to feed on the PP. fuck sakes you’re dense.
The 29 goal and 58 point player is why the 100 point player got 75 assists.
Ros / Roy / Rob. That’s the Cup winning key.
Increase the dosage.

ParticipantI won’t lie I’m liking Treliving’s focus atm. Seems a bit more on lines 3 and 4 and not at finding some top six guy to replace Marner which was the point all along.
They got their $7+ million dollar guy to replace Marner already, his name is Knies. The rest will be some nice intelligent moves around forward depth leading up til October is my guess unless there is some sort of no brainer move that comes along.
Imagine a 3rd line with Roslovic, Roy, and Robertson. I wouldn’t mind that line at all.
You’re on fentanyl if you think Knies can replace Marner. I’ll be happy to remind you of that when Knies doesn’t come anywhere close to 100 points and 75 assists.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantI like Roslovic fine – but I have to admit that I liked him better in 2021-22 with Columbus – but the opportunity he had there (playing with Laine/Nyquist/Voracek) while Jenner was injured seemed to inspire him. Last year in Carolina he was given a shot with Jarvis and Aho but while his stats were okay, his actual play wasn’t very good – at least not defensively. I’m also not a huge fan of the fact that he’s not a PK option. I’d like to get more guys in that bottom-6 who are defensively sound, battle hard and are effective penalty killers.
I do love how the Leafs management, media and fans ran a guy out of town because he “disappeared in the playoffs”, despite having more career playoff points than everybody on the team, but they’re going to bring in a guy with 3 playoff goals in 45 career playoff games and pretend it’s a good move.
So dismal was Roslovic in the playoffs even the Carolina Hurricanes, the ultimate work by committee team, threw him to the curb to replace him with Ehlers at double the price, another player with playoff numbers that scream meh.
Roslovic is more of the same garbage that guarantees the Leafs will not succeed in the playoffs.

ParticipantNot sure where this rumor came from, I know it was mentioned in the Hockey News, but it would be one of the dumbest trades made in recent memory.
Discuss!!
Dumb for Calgary, yes. He’s their #1 center. If they trade him now for a pylon like Rielly, they’d be throwing in the towel before the season even started. And they missed the playoffs on a tie breaker. Considering how bad the Flames were when Treliving left (and how bad they’ll be once he’s done destroying this team), I doubt they’d throw him a get out of jail free card.
The only way a trade for Rielly works is if he ends up in Vancouver or Seattle and the Leafs get Jamie Oleksiak or Tyler Myers to plug the hole. It’s the only two places close enough to his hometown that would allow him to consider leaving his settled home of Toronto. But management doesn’t have the balls or the brains to make it work or happen.
Regardless of the worry about puck movement, Rielly absolutely sucks defensively. The Leafs could sign an average LHD (Matt Grzelcyk) and still be better off so long as their D-core wasn’t deployed in a stupid manner like leaning heavy on the top pair such as 25/20/15. The Leafs blueline is old, overrated and unbalanced (not enough real RHD). The only way they’ll make it work (with or without Rielly) is by keeping everybody at roughly the same ice time so nobody has to shoulder too much of the load and having 3LHD/3RHD so nobody has to be out of position.

ParticipantYou’re making me hope Cowan makes the team more and more and does just fine. I grew up with his aunt and still see her routinely.
Cowan has nothing to do with Marner. He’s on an ELC. Both Cowan and the Leafs would still be better off with Marner and without Rielly and the rest of the garbage they’re keeping.
Congratulations on knowing his aunt.
Unholy_Goalie
ParticipantI mean seriously, the guy never won anything award and never helped get the leafs past the 2nd round, this is no big loss.
But keep Tavares, Rielly, Matthews and Nylander…? All of which have less career playoff points than Marner…
