ParticipantYou have to wonder if this is going to make it harder for the Leafs to re-sign Matthews once his current contract is up. This new CBA will literally cost Matthews millions out of pocket.
If matthews keeps his disappearing act in playoff games 5 – 7….would we really want to resign him?
If in the next 4 years matthews hasnt led this team to a couple of cup finals..or even one cup finals and several 3rd round appearances…..Im ok to move on from him. That is a valid point, Matthews needs to nut TF up.

ParticipantNot sure how accurate it is…but only about $1.2m difference.
Bro, are you serious?!?! If your boss said to you “we’re making some changes and you’ll be taking home 15% less,” you’d just be cool with that?!?!
That’s $1.2M per year! On an 8 year contract, that’s almost $10M!!! Nobody can convince me that doesn’t give some teams a HUGE advantage.

what will the cap be in 2028? around 120 mil?
If AM signed for the same cap % as his current deal, that would be 16.68m
so call it 17, would he sign for that?guess it depends what Mcdavid does
They sign matching $15M contracts, and share the C:-)

Not as bad as I thought it would be like I mentioned. I’m sure a banker/investor/etc could play the game beautifully
True, but I’m sure they’re also currently doing that, so any change to the CBA will still have a pretty serious impact on the tax gymnastics they’re able to do.

ParticipantIt’s the ultimate in stupidity in the sense that there is zero chance Rielly waives to go to a fringe team like Calgary.
But, if you can somehow (you can’t) get rid of 5 years of a useless, overpaid, underperforming Rielly at $7.5M for 4 years of a somewhat useful Kadri for $7M, you do that all day.
Kadri fills a bigger hole in the FWD group than the hole created in the D group by moving Rielly. But there is no chance in hell this trade happens 1 for 1.

ParticipantMarner is talented but UG’s crying is making him gone so fucking worth it that I’m loving it lol
I’m sure he’ll find another topic to bitch about.
He’s been going strong for almost 20 years now, so I have no doubt.

ParticipantI just don’t get it: we’ve been watching this same core 4 shit the bed over and over and over again, to the point where we’re (still) the laughing stock of the league, just a different brand of Maple Laffs.
We move Marner and get a serviceable 3C and our center depth is as good as it has been in years. We land a young playmaker with lots of upside for peanuts. Our D is still very good, our goaltending is still very good… we have cap space, the GM isn’t signing terrible UFA deals, and we’re in really good shape to make a trade for a bonefide top 6 winger especially if we can move out Kampf and Reaves and have all summer to do it.
Some of you just want to be miserable.
*ONE* of us just wants to be miserable. The best part is, there was NOTHING Tre could have done to keep Marner. He had one foot out the door for well over a year now. There is no amount of money he would have accepted to stay. But, might as well yell at the clouds to get the attention his parents probably never gave him.

ParticipantHe’s been on the Selke voting list 7 years in a row. He finished 3rd two years ago, 7th this year.
Also averaged 100 points per 82 games 5 years in a row.
wow, hang the “finished 3rd two years ago, 7th this year” banners to go with your, Won 1 round again and played 7 games against the Panthers awards
Marner also won the “Throws his gloves the hardest” award last year and the “Driest hair in a game 7 of the playoffs” award this year.

ParticipantI asked this way before he left and I’ll ask it again, what team out there lost a 100 point Selke nominated player for basically nothing and then won the Cup afterwards
has a selke nominated 100 point player ever changed teams before?
I doubt thats ever happened to start with, so not possible to win a cupif it has happened, who was it?
otherwise what a stupid questionOf all the things that have ever happened, they hadn’t happened until they did happen. Crazy stat.

ParticipantVinni Lettieri, boys, plan the parade.
Waiting for the pictures of him in Leaf PJs.
Another 1 year deal.
A bottom six build up year just like I mentioned. My primary curiousity at this point is who are they going to dump and how.
You gotta figure Kampf and Jarny are on their way to San Jose. They need to get to the cap floor and now that their bonuses are paid, SJ can take on their full cap hits without having to pay real dollars for their contracts.

ParticipantI’m beginning to guess term isn’t something Treliving is willing to offer this year. Why? I won’t even pretend to know. My guess is it’s because unlike previous GMs he’s simply not seeing anyone he likes as more than a one year fill in.This years UFA class was extremely weak compared to other years, and certainly when compared to next year. For that reason, I’ve been saying for months that next year is going to be a step backward and I saw the writing on the wall with Marner. Unless there is a big splash coming, Brad has cap space available at the TDL and lots available for July 1st, 2026. While I don’t expect the Leafs to win the division next year, I’m still excited for the future. Knies re-signing was a huge positive for the Leafs moving forward.

ParticipantI won’t miss Marner, he’s got great hands and he’s a fantastic passer but he’s simply not worth what a Canadian team would have to pay to keep him around. Keep targeting the American players Toronto, that way you give it all to them as a bonus July 1st while they live in the US and only pay them league minimum through the season just like you do with Matthews.
Sounds like that “loophole” is going to be closed in the next CBA, and a lower percentage of the contract can be paid in signing bonuses. So now, not only are we dealing with higher tax rates for Canadian players, (which, fuck you Gary Betman, is 1000% a MAJOR consideration for players), it’ll be harder to attract Americans to play in Canada.
