Participantthats cool. but I dont want the Leafs GM making quick reactionary moves. Id also prefer he keep his real intentions quiet. showing your hand doesnt help.
you cleary take a lot a face value and like to react (over react), which is your brand. But most of whats said doesnt matter, I dont care. its the actions not the media snippets
His real intentions are to run it back, retool and not rebuild. His hand has already been shown through Pelley and his fabrication of a search for the best person to build a Cup winner.
And your brand is that of a homer. The actions will include seeing Rielly back again as the #1 D and Berube behind the bench which will make this team as bad as it was last year.

ParticipantI just hope Boston will not be picking 6th overall come June.
Maybe 7th or 8th but most likely not!.https://www.tankathon.com/nhl/pick_odds
Leafs have 8.5% at 1st, 8.6% chance at 2nd, 0.3% chance at 3rd, 0% chance at 4th, 24.5% chance at 5th, 44% chance at 6th and 14.2% chance at 7th.
58% chance Boston drafts 6th or 7th.

Participantits about time he finally started to show in the playoffs.
to bad he could do that here in Toronto. He had more career playoff points than everybody else on the team, including Matthews, Nylander and Tavares but oddly none of them get labeled as playoff busts. He showed up in Toronto. The rest of his team rarely did. Toronto was the problem.

Participantcomments about Berube and Rielly a few hours after they are introduced is not something I give a shit about, what else is he supposed to say at this point.
Nobody is going to toss the coach and longest serving player directly under the bus 5 mins after a press conf.anyway, it was mostly Pelley who made that awkward and uncomfortable. Chayka speaks well and did say a lot of the right things after. but none of it matters if they made bad moves.
its great he recognizes there is a problem with the leafs D and moving the puck up ice. thats a problem, but also the coach/system/style does not fit or work with this team. they got dummied all season, I hope thats addressed. He’s supposed to say he will evaluate everybody at every position and then fire Rielly and Berube into the Sun the next day.
Chayka can’t be taken seriously if one second he is identifying clear and obvious problems with the defense and then the next second endorsing the two biggest sources of failure of the defense.

ParticipantRogers going into full damage control with Chayka via 1 on 1 interview with Friedman after TSN called the entire press conference uncomfortable and side stepping questions of his past. Rogers is going to run the propaganda extra hard to cover for this one because almost everybody, across most platforms sees this hiring as a failure. The nostalgia of Sundin seems to have done next to nothing to serve as a smokescreen.
It also appears Chayka is rather unpopular among other GMs and executives and more importantly, very few actually respect him. This is a significant issue if there are people out there who will refuse to work with this guy making trades and transactions even more difficult than they already are. Considering how many times he got swindled in the past, perhaps that’s a blessing in disguise that nobody will pick up the phone when he calls. No trades means less 1st round picks and prospects going out the door.
Chayka also said something rather strange; if Sundin says “don’t do it”, Chayka won’t do it. So Sundin (executive senior advisor) isn’t his superior but has unquestioned veto power? What the fuck is this structure? Is Chayka here to be Sundin’s puppet like Dubas was Shanahan’s puppet but without the title when shit goes sideways?
Sundin also said his vision of a winning team (something he was never a part of in the NHL) is EXACTLY the same as Chayka. Again, is Chayka such a fanboy of Sundin that whatever he says goes? Is he dreaming of bringing back the Pat Quinn days of trading every last piece of the future for 40 year old deadline rentals for a 2nd round exit after pounding Ottawa? Sure hope not.
Thus far, they have a “vision” of a winning team that INCLUDES Matthews, Nylander, RIELLY, Berube and…yeah…good luck with that RUN IT BACK blue and white fantasy…

ParticipantMarner with another goal and 2 points including shutting down the Ducks in the final minute. He did it all tonight. Earned every penny of that 12 million.

ParticipantIf he called Rielly a great defenseman, then yeah, he’s unqualified. Just keeping Willy and Auston around is just going to prolong the downward spiral. Good luck getting McDavid to sign.
He also called Berube a fantastic coach despite taking a shit on how the team couldn’t play D which is mostly Berube’s fault given his incompatible system.
Chayka knows Sundin because of Domi. Chayka also knows Matthews from his time in Arizona. If you do the math here, Pelley is desperately trying to get Matthews to stay to avoid a desperately needed rebuild. The “search” was a big fabrication because anybody with half a brain would want a full rebuild here and Pelley says no. So, he hired Sundin to quell the angry homers and will use Chayka as another advanced stats nerd puppet to appease him.
The last hope here is Matthews just says fuck this organization and that will quickly force them into a rebuild whether they want it or not. But even if that were to happen, we’ve got a guy with a horrible trade record and a trash draft record left to rebuild this team.
This fucking hiring is an absolute disaster. There might be zero hope for another 5 years by time this shit is done. Fuck this franchise.

ParticipantAssistant to the Regional Manager Sundin was on Sportsnet and keeps repeating the same shit about “being in a great locker room that knows what it means to win” type lines. Sorry Mats, you were a great Leafs player but you were never in a locker room full of winners in the NHL. Yes, a couple of guys passed through the Leafs locker room at the trade deadlines but ultimately, the teams Sundin was a part of lost in the Conference Finals, at best. The only thing those teams knew how to do consistently was beat Ottawa. After that, the true contenders usually knew how to put the Leafs down having lost to teams New Jersey, Buffalo, Carolina when it mattered most. Is that the new goal here? Just playoff runs that don’t go anywhere and watching other teams win the Cup? Because that’s effectively what the Leafs have already been doing by losing to Cup contenders like Boston, Florida and Tampa Bay multiple times except they lost in the 1st round instead of the Conference Finals because of the playoff format.
And Chayka just called Morgan Rielly a great defenseman. He’s fucking disqualified.

ParticipantWhy the fuck would Raddysh and Tuch sign with the Leafs?
Seriously. On what planet do those guys jump ship from two teams that are contenders to the Leafs? For a gross overpayment? If that’s the plan (grossly overpay UFAs) clearly you haven’t learned anything.
Trade for who? Give up what? Leafs have dogshit to trade. Have you seen Chayka’s trade history? He consistently loses nearly every major trade he’s ever made. The only trades he “won” were trades where he took on huge LTIR contracts for draft picks. Chayka trades 1st round picks line candy, dumps top prospects often and can’t draft worth a fuck either.
Are you suggesting Chayka has a cocaine problem?
Why the fuck would Tuch want to continue to live in Buffalo? If he wanted to be there, why hasn’t he signed an extension? People leave contenders all the time. You don’t know what motivates these guys. Yeah, they’re both long shots, and I fear overpaying Raddysh, but far crazier things have happened. The literal point of my post was that we aren’t THAT far from contending if Chayka can make some bold moves. Who knows, maybe they win the draft lottery.
Again, I share your skepticism of Chayka, but I’m not gonna be like you and blow a gasket any time anyone at MLSE breathes.
He probably has a meth problem via Adderall so yeah probably not far off.
Because Buffalo is a contender right now and the Leafs are dogshit. He hasn’t signed perhaps because he wants to get overpaid. He’s also not from Toronto so don’t pray for any kind of hometown discount. Why the fuck would he want to live in Toronto? To deal with all the same garbage he has to deal with Buffalo? He’s from Syracuse so Buffalo is basically home for this guy.
Raddysh is looking for the same giant contract Rielly got. Again, have you not learned from your mistakes of paying for an offensive D to a huge contract after a career year?
The Leafs are VERY, VERY far away from contender status. They couldn’t get past the 1st round BEFORE, now they’re a lottery team. And no, winning the lottery does not change this team. A small, one-way offensive only winger doesn’t change it. This team needs to be torn to the ground and rebuilt. One overpaid UFA or a non-generational 1st overall pick does not change that.

ParticipantGarbage time coming in hot and heavy. This looks like a mushroom cloud within the next 12 months. You think it’s bad without first rounders for 2 years, just wait and hold my Wendy’s Frosty. It’ll look like the Phoenix Coyotes of 4 years ago. Might as well start looking for a backup team to follow for the next decade. Septic tank city come on down.
It’s truly not that bad. Work to be done, for sure, but it’s doable.
Sign Raddysh, and Tuch, then we’ll see what Chayka can actually swing on the trade front. If he’s able to move 44 then he’s instantly in my good books.
