The Leafs were 29th at 5v5 expected goals last year; that’s lottery team level right there.They won the division because they had excellent goaltending and a much better defensive group.
Matthews doesn’t need Marner to exceed at this point in his career. I would say Marner needs Matthews far more than the other way around.
Marner plays slow, was incapable of getting in on the forecheck, so any winger capable of doing that is going to suit Berube’s systems.
With Marner gone, they can build out a balanced team, it’s really that simple.
Not sure about that.
So far we know, matthews passes more when marner isnt on his wing.
Marner scores more when Matthews isnt on this line.
Everyone who plays with Marner sees their points go up.
Matthews can still score (just not the past year or so) in short term without marner
The leafs have a great record with Matthews out of the line up and Marner in. That drops a little when its the other way around.
Marner and matthews can, have been and probably will still be successful without eachother. Its just not true that marner “needs” matthews.
Now, I do agree the money and team need to be more balanced and that something needs to change….and right now the easiest thing to change are the two FA’s.
But we always seem to think that throwing money at FA’s will solve everything…..with marner leaving, we’ll have $25m to spend. Knies will take up about $7m of that. So $18m to get a top 6 winger and center and improve our bottom 6…..and we dont have any 1st rounders for the 3 years.
That’s tight.
Also, will our old D be able to stay healthy most of the year?
Can our goaltending repeat how stellar they were this past season?
Also, other teams will improve as well.
Im sure change is coming…..just not sure the change will make the grass any greener.
And I get that running it back is nuts as well.

its not just minus marner. you replace him with 8mil and 5 mil players.who are better playoff warriors. dont care about the reg season. They have to go through good teams no matter what. They had home ice, didnt help. just get better..in the playoffs

The player who leads in point most year in reg season, but doesnt show up when it counts in games 5-7 is probably walking for free.
Captain is pretty soft, often injured during the playoffs and doesnt seem to hate to lose.
A bunch of ok FA’s who are gonna want to be overpaid this offseason.Leafs look………………….like the leafs.

The entire hockey world says Marner is walking, for free.Organizational failure of epic proportions. Management disaster.
Tree is part of that. Yes he only had a few weeks to make a tough decision on the core. But he ultimately walked the team to where they are now. No one has ever had the stones to make a tough decision in this era. Now? Best of luck to Tree and the management. They’re going to need it. I’m not super optimistic Tree can make chicken salad out of this. He got completely schooled at the deadline. Look at what Florida did, and what he did. His record does not give me a ton of be-leaf.
According to the media, Tre had been shopping Marner since last off season, no one wanted him without an extension…marner wasnt gonna sign one.
I agree Tre isnt that great at making trades, his past deadline moves were huge overpayments…mainly the laughton one.dmnted

I saw a trade proposal between the Leaf and Vegas
Leafs get Karlsson for David Kampf, 2027 second-round pick, 2025 third-round pick (Colorado).
Then Vegas could take a run at signing Marner as I don’t think Marner will resign with the Leafs.This would leave the Leafs with hardly any draft picks for a few years.
Leafs really cant afford to lose any more picks.
I had suggested a sign and trade with Vegas. Marner at years for either Hertl or Karlsson

I mentioned a week ago I think P Kane would be a good short term add. Play him with Matthews, see how things go.
I feel like Toews may sign with the jets.But a 1 year under a $1m deal with the leafs I would be fine with.

Leafs would’ve won if Stolarz didn’t get injured, and if the passenger wasn’t being a passenger.Agreed. Bigger in net and better puck handling….leafs would have won the series.
Anyone who suggest the florida would have owned him because he was a former teammate is just an idiot. Stolarz is a much different goalie than last year.

For $11m he disappears when games count.
In 2023 he had 1 assist in the final 3 games against boston
In 2022 he had 1 assist and 1 goal in the final 3 games against Florida…he showed up for one game
In 2021 he had 2 assist in the final 3 games….technically final 4 games against tampa
In 2020 he had 1 assist in the final 3 games….technically final 4 games against Montreal

I got banned for replying to Ek in his thread – after Ek said that my comment was “a good point.”And I reached out to Ek and Kevin Allan – neither had the courtesy to reply to me.
It looks, feels and smells like it is days away from disappearing.
Ya your ban seems crazy and uncalled for sure, based on the details you’ve provided. And its weird that it occurred to others within the same short timeframe…maybe the site was hacked? Dunno. Cause that never seemed to have occurred in the past…it was mods that were handing out bans…sometimes for personal reasons.
Honestly, I wouldnt expect Ek to reply to anyone based on ban….Im sure he would have alot to reply to.but people have been saying for years that HB is days away from collaspe and it never occurs. Unless they miss their server bills.
So far, neither site is perfect…..and I dont anticipate either will be.
