So that huge 2026 UFA forward class is now down to Kempe, Panarin and Necas. Unless you want to include Nick Schmautz as a difference maker.

Yeah, the thoughts most of us had the past few years about signing that “Hossa like player” or a scoring forward through free agency likely won’t be happening due to the cap increase.
Now, I think the way to get other players to fill gaps in the lineup will be via trade. And the trade bait will be the accumulated draft picks and/or the stable of prospects.With Moore, Greene, Lardis, Kantserov, Boisvert, Vanacker, Frondell, Nestrasil, West coming up the next few years there will be more forwards than spots on the team.
Can say the same with goalies within a couple of years. A couple among Knight, Soderblom, Commesso, Gajan and the 2 young Russians (assuming the last three develop into something) will be available.
I could argue that the defense has the least assets to trade. Vlasic, Kaiser, Lev and Rinzel will probably be 1-4. EDM, Allan and KK are 5th and 6th types. And depth is still needed justifying keeping the last guy around.
Just think if the salary cap went up like it is now in 2009?
That’s what’s kind of cool with this rebuild and the salary cap, they will be able to keep a lot of their players, Nazar and Vlasic contracts help that already.
Great points, and honestly, I’m right there with you. The Hawks’ next phase of the rebuild will have to come from internal growth and smart trades, not big free-agent splashes.
The prospect pool is getting crowded — especially up front — and that’s exactly the kind of “good problem” you want when building a contender. Guys like Moore, Greene, Lardis, Boisvert, and Vanacker all bring something different, but not everyone will fit long-term. That depth gives Davidson flexibility to move picks or mid-tier prospects for established NHL players once Bedard and Nazar are ready to push for a playoff spot.
You’re also right on the goaltending side. With Knight, Commesso, Soderblom, and Gajan, there’s no way they all end up staying — one or two will become valuable trade chips once the picture clears up.
NEXT SUMMER:

I wasn’t impressed by Soderblom tonight. He made a fantastic save, but keeps giving up rebounds, and he is slow going side to side. I watched the game on the CHSN app, and the first period was difficult to navigate. When they went to a commercial, they didn’t come back. I had to click out to the home page, then click on the watch live, and then click on the game. It’s like they ran the commercials on a constant loop. Wasn’t impressed. They did get better, but I missed the first minute of the game because of the commercials. They need to do better, or I’m canceling it. The boys looked good again tonight, but they have some areas to work on. Lev was responsible for that first goal, and Murphy was way out of position for the second. Bedard needs to take a lesson from Nazar on breakaway shots.

I started a new forum dedicated to the Hawks prospects. Perhaps we can include news of what the kids are doing in the AHL, NCAA, Juniors and in Europe. Maybe this also would be a good place for Totem to contribute his WHL scouting reports and for Wiz to include his insights on the 2026 draft. You can find it here.
Good God this software……. Artie had a 53 corsi v the champs, 64 at Bpston. He’s 19 yrs old man and I think he leads the club in corsi for by a bunch. The eye test in these two games has shown a player who’s skill/skating/offensive upside can impact the game but he has some real WTF moments and his 3 stick penalties in the 2 games may have cost the team a win or even 2.
I came on to post if he keeps up these penalties they’re gonna have to sit him but man, the 19 yr old has underlying numbers that says you can’t. ………
