ParticipantCardinal point does the financial planning for many nhlers. Yes there’s a couple of nuances to adjust the tax rate but taxes are a significant variable for these players.
The cap has become large enough that the issue is growing. The league will have to do something. My best guess is that this 4 yr CBA will be the last with a hard cap. They’ll soften it up allowing wealthy to spend above the Cap.

Trade everyone. Start rebuilding now.

ParticipantIt’s really quite amazing it’s all come to this point when people like me were saying FIVE YEARS AGO that this wasn’t working. And as I was told, repeatedly by the hockey Kreskins in here, “stfu you dumb internet donkey, Dubas knows what he’s doing, it’s gonna work out”.
But seriously…..could the Leafs management have possibly cocked this up worse than they have??

Seriously though …I’m a big believer that Knies and Nylander can, and will, elevate. Nylander’s been crying for more and now Berube’s got every reason to give him 22+ mins per night. We’ll find out soon whether he can level-up like he did when he was playing for a new contract. Knies is a beast ..skating, size …all of it. Hopefully he evolves into one of the best PF’s in the game. Matthews needs to find his health and shake off whatever was buggin’ him last year.

Cant.
Stuck with Matthews for at least two more years and we dont have our first round pick for a couple of years.
Rebuild once we get our 1st rounders again.June 30, 2025 at 6:49 pm #13971Fakepartofme

Nothing. Maybe sign Kane to a two year deal

I like the idea of going after Mangiapane & Tanev and probably Connor Brown . . .but that leaves something like this:
Knies – Matthews – Maccelli
Mangiapane – Tavares – Nylander
Tanev – Roy – Brown
Lorentz – Laughton – McMannI’m not sure Domi fits in. I mean this lineup offers over $7m in cap room – and it assumes that Domi, Jarnkrok and Kampf all find new homes – although I’ve always loved what Domi brings in terms of passion. But something like Tanev – Roy – Brown would offer speed, checking, tenacity and some size/physicality. A 4th of Lorentz – Laughton – McMann would also have some size, cycle ability, solid forecheck, decent speed on the wings and work ethic.
The problems ultimately – line 1 doesn’t get any more competitive; line 2 doesn’t get much better defensively; there’s not a ton of goals in the bottom-6 still, but probably as many as we have had – they would likely be scored on less and it creates a lot of PK options throughout the lineup.

I do think Macelli makes Domi the odd man out.

ParticipantIt’s actually closer to 16.5 AAV in Toronto for 12 AAV in Vegas. 14 AAV in Toronto would have been a discount for Marner.
No surprise he didn’t go to California. He can visit from Vegas but he’s way better off in every way in Vegas. Good for him.
Well players are paid game by game so it’s not a full difference like that, Leaf players only get paid 43 games in Ontario for instance and they aren’t high income earners anywhere else. Also, a notable difference for players on the leafs is they get a notable additional income for marketing which we get zero info about.
Well yeah, but additional income is not additional cap space. In fact, the additional income allows the Leafs to support other teams, including the ones offering players the huge tax break. Even if it is only 43 games worth it is still significant.
