The ship has sailed but I was really hoping to get Brown in the bottom-6 because he’s an exceptional penalty killer and still puts up 30 points / season with limited opportunity to do so.

One way of looking at it is that Marner scored roughly 30 goals but a healthy Auston Matthews will make up half of that. Nic Roy will contribute another 15 from the third line. If Maccelli works out, you get another 15 or so. The question isn’t the offense, per se, it is the penalty killing and the defensive awareness that Marner brought. As much as we all got frustrated when he’d screw up, he did make a lot of good defensive plays and was typically reading plays well and being in the right position to stop plays from developing. Maccelli has some larger shoes to fill there – a more mature Knies will help, a healthy Matthews will help – but I did want them to find a faster guy or two to enhance that PK.

Lots of summer left. Not a lot of options.

Yeah I’m not really seeing much of a free agent year for the leafs tbh. Everyone seemed to be expecting some sort of big move when all I’ve truly expected was a build up of the bottom six.

Maybe when it comes to replacing Marner the leafs will just use the most recent London Knight who won the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy ????

I won’t miss Marner, he’s got great hands and he’s a fantastic passer but he’s simply not worth what a Canadian team would have to pay to keep him around. Keep targeting the American players Toronto, that way you give it all to them as a bonus July 1st while they live in the US and only pay them league minimum through the season just like you do with Matthews.

Sounds like that “loophole” is going to be closed in the next CBA, and a lower percentage of the contract can be paid in signing bonuses. So now, not only are we dealing with higher tax rates for Canadian players, (which, fuck you Gary Betman, is 1000% a MAJOR consideration for players), it’ll be harder to attract Americans to play in Canada.

    Why bother?

Americans in Canada is the easy part.

As I’ve said it’s just like Matthews. He only gets paid league minimum and gets everything else as a bonus while living in Arizona on July 1st.

The tough people to keep in Canada are the Canadians, and there are loads of Canadian stars and that’s who they currently want in the US.

So I’m just looking things over and here’s a little interest.

    Maccelli: $3.43 million (40P estimate)
    Roy: $3 million (30P estimate)

Find another guy for $3 million who can dump 30P in and bang, there’s Marner’s 100P replaced for $9.43 million while offering far more balanced scoring.

    Yup.
As I posted earlier, grab a skinner, patches and or Nyquist on one year deals….get two or all three.
Im sure cowan will play a role as well.

Or maybe spend a little more and get one of Olofsson, beauvillier or roslovic…but the term may need to be longer

I’m beginning to guess term isn’t something Treliving is willing to offer this year. Why? I won’t even pretend to know. My guess is it’s because unlike previous GMs he’s simply not seeing anyone he likes as more than a one year fill in.

This years UFA class was extremely weak compared to other years, and certainly when compared to next year. For that reason, I’ve been saying for months that next year is going to be a step backward and I saw the writing on the wall with Marner. Unless there is a big splash coming, Brad has cap space available at the TDL and lots available for July 1st, 2026. While I don’t expect the Leafs to win the division next year, I’m still excited for the future. Knies re-signing was a huge positive for the Leafs moving forward.

Vinni Lettieri, boys, plan the parade.

Waiting for the pictures of him in Leaf PJs.

They’re in win now mode though, so I definitely could see them moving Cowan for the right player.

They’ve been in “win now mode” for 5 years. Time to re-access.
Besides, I think Cowan is part of their plans going forward….at least for this year.

What’s to re-assess? They moved out Marner, they need to fill that roster spot, and the only UFA option is Ehlers, who’s a LW anyways and not a Berube player, so what else are they supposed to do?

    Another 1 year deal.

A bottom six build up year just like I mentioned. My primary curiousity at this point is who are they going to dump and how.

You gotta figure Kampf and Jarny are on their way to San Jose. They need to get to the cap floor and now that their bonuses are paid, SJ can take on their full cap hits without having to pay real dollars for their contracts.

They aren’t bringing in another star player. That has been the complaint. The leafs were built wrong. Too many stars and not enough character.

It will be an average winger who can feed Matthews and Knies for that line moving forward and that is it. They’re already spending $20 million on the top line, they won’t be spending much more. The person who gets added will be carried by those two, not a guy who will be expected to carry those two.

Yup, and now Jarnkrok will only cost $775K more and Kampf will only cost $3.48 million more post this years bonuses.

Bottom-6? He’s signed to be Alex Steeves.

Never said a star, but it’ll be a top 6, not a tweener, a legit top 6 RW. Win now, they’re not going to want to take a massive step back next year, not with how their contracts line up for expiry, especially on the backend.

Guys, Codi Ceci is making $100k MORE than JT for the next 4 years.

    JT is an absolute beauty.
